How Do I Stop My 2 Rats From Attacking Each Other

How do I stop my pet rats fighting each other?

I'm pet-sitting for a friend, she has two fancy rats. They are both males and recently one of them (ironically the smaller one) has been getting very aggressive about everything. Their box, their water, their food, and even attention from me. The small one will constantly chase the other one around, sometimes biting it and making it squeal. The big one never fights back, just tries to avoid the other.

How can I stop the rat being so aggressive? I need something that won't cost me an arm and a leg, just a temporary fix is fine. It really sucks because they normally start fighting (very loudly) at around midnight and wake me up. I like them a lot, and so does my friend. I can't get rid of them. Is there anything I can do?

Would my cats attack a pet rat?

I have 2 rats and 4 cats, and i can sit with the rat on my lap while my cats sit next to me, and they don't seem to mind each other, but i would never leave them unsupervised or anything like that.

Is there a way to keep a cat from attacking a pet mouse (without amputating the cat's claws, as this is not an option)?

Yes, you could knock its teeth out as well as chopping its claws off, that way your stupid looking sad abused cat will live happily with your mouse, unless of course it gums it to death, or maybe boxes it to death.Or, you could just wake up from this ridiculous idea and accept that in general, mice do not make great life partners with cats.If you think that mutilating a cat is a way to satisfy pointless hipster urges to have an uber cool pet pair in the house, then you probably need psychological evaluation first. This is a serious answer, and therefore there is no point in getting all BNBR about it.If you read other questions about declawing cats, or any other body modification of pets, you’ll see that I’m being mild. You could try all sorts of things, that do not harm the cat. But you’ll always end up with a monthly mouse bill. You could bring a kitten up in company of mice from a very young age, but they’ll always turn, one day or another. It’s hard wired in, kind of like their claws, that insane people have removed.A cat is a predator. It is a one creature destroyer of any other species that it can deal with.Quite apart from the constant trauma for the mice, as it is also hard wired in to them to be afraid of predators. If you want a cat that is going to ignore mice, you need a lion, panther, tiger or other big cat. They just can’t be bothered. But they might eat you of course.

HELP! How to stop two male rats fighting? Please.?

Basically, I got two male rats late July, they are brothers and have been together since birth, and other than the odd little fight, they have gotten on fine.
They are about 6 months old now, and we found them shrieking at each other and then they started fighting really viciously and screaming. We separated them and they have both got minor cuts, but nothing serious.
This was really frightening and we don't want it to happen again, so we tried them together 10 minutes later and they just started again. One is now spending the night in the cat box whilst the other is right next to him in the cage, and we're going to try them again tomorrow.

Please, does anyone have any idea for what I could do to stop them fighting? I really don't want to have to split them up full time, so anything other than buying a new cage? thank you.

How do i stop my rat from humping the other?

This is pretty normal behavior and can be happening for several reasons:

1. The rats doing the humping are asserting their dominance over the humpee. Dogs do this as well. If a rat is humping another rat, it is essentially saying "I'm the boss". Everything should be fine as long as the humpee doesnt challenge the humper. A fight could possibly erupt, so keep an eye on them.

2. The rats doing the humping can sense the other female is in heat, or they themselves are in heat. Think of it as sexual overdrive. They are in heat and there is no male to procreate with, so they attempt to procreate with each other. It's a hormonal overload and its ok.

Overall, I wouldnt worry unless they start fighting. There is really no way to stop it unless you separate them. Good luck!

How can I stop one of my rats from being a bully to the others? Why is this happening?

They are not bullying. This is normal behaviour for rats, and many other animals, and there is no need to have it stop.

Rats live in very strict pecking orders. There is only one "alpha" rat, a lesser one, an even lesser one, and so on. The one doing the "bullying" is claiming her dominance. This is not violent fighting, and is natural for her to do. What she is doing is called power grooming, where they chase one another around, and the more dominant one will pin the other over and nibble, or groom her, aggressively. But you need to understand that unless the rats are actually inflicting physical wounds onto one another, they are in no harm, and you need to trust them to settle their dominance out on their own as they need to.

They began doing this most likely because they are maturing, and developing reproductive hormones. Babies will have no such instinct, but adults will sort themselves out like this as part of who would get to mate with who, and who gets to eat first, etc. They should settle down after a while, but for the time being, as long as their cage is enough to accommodate them, they are fine the way they are.

EDIT: Ah, okay. That is a whole other issue indeed. How old are they, how long have you had them, and how long have they been together? Also, how large is the cage, and are there enough individual hiding places per rat, like boxes or levels, so they are never forced together in one spot. Another thing to watch is what triggers the aggression, whether feeding time, or only evenings, etc? Please give more detail.

My two female rats are fighting?

Both male & female rats will chase & wrestle with other. Most of the time this isn't a problem & you only need to worry if either of your rats is bleeding or if 1 is obviously terrified by the other. If they seem to get along for the most part, sleep together @ least some of the time & are eating well, everything's okay.

Rats usually wrestle for 1 of 3 reasons: They're trying to decide which 1 is the Alpha rat, they're having an argument about food, toys or whatever, or they're playing with each other. Some rats will playfully wrestle with your hand like a kitten would, too.

The squeaking is normal & again, usually nothing to worry about. Our girls sound like birds when they squeak. Our boys don't wrestle as much as the girls do but are *lots* louder when they do.
