How Do You Remove Another Operating System On Your Hard Drive

Does wiping a hard drive clean remove the operating system?

Formatting the hard disk clears everything, including the operating system. This is why most computers come with a System Restore disc so that you can revert back to when you first purchased it. Basically what they do is wipe the drive and reinstall everything you had.

So to get back to the question, yes, it will delete the OS, but if you have a back-up disc, it's not hard to reinstall it. Also, if you don't have a back-up disc and want to put an OS on it, look into Linux. I dual-boot it with XP and it's great, and free.

How do you format your hard drive without an operating system disc?

If your computer doesn't have an operating system, it can't do anything with that hard drive, much less format it. And of course, a disc format is going to depend on the operating system. While many operating systems can read and write different formats, they may have limitations on some kinds. So it depends on what you want to do with the disc. The simple answer: I use someone else's computer. Or I use a "hot" CD on a PC with a CD drive, boot an operating system from the CD, and proceed to format the drive.  Or I install an OS -- every OS installer will set up your main disc while it's installing the OS, including special requirements. For example, Windows usually wants a single drive partition. Linux nearly always wants to reserve a partition for swap space, and some versions like to put system files on one partition, user files on another. If you're interested in formatting a drive for portable use between systems, you probably want the Microsoft file formats FAT32 or exFAT. Not because of anything Microsoft's done per se, but because SD Card and other forms of portable storage, mobile devices, cameras, etc. all "speak FAT", especially FAT32.

How to remove alternate operating system from my PC?

Hi Simran, this is very easy.
Follow the following steps :
1- In the desktop right click on My Computer and select Properties
2- Select 'Advenced' tab from top of that wizard.
3- There are three option where select 'Settings' from 'Startup and recovery option'
4- You will see another dialog box and there is one combo box named 'Default Operating System'
5- Just remove the OS's name which you want to delete.
I hope you can remove OS's name if you do this than it wil be deleted.

What will happen if i remove the operating system on my desktop?

If you remove the operating system on your desktop computer you will be blowing away anything that was stored on the operating system partition of your hard drive. This includes all personal files (documents, pictures, mp3 files, videos, etc) , and other various items. You will of course also lose your operating system. I strongly recommend you make a backup of all your important files before proceeding.

Generally speaking removing the operating system from a computer is done for a few reasons.

1. Changing the operating system (IE if you are going from Windows Vista to some kind of Linux variant)
2. Getting ready to perform a fresh install of an operating system (Possibly using the same OS but starting over fresh with install CDs etc)
3. Getting ready to decomission the machine in question. (IE if you are going to throw out the entire computer it is generally considered best practice to wipe the hard drive by destroying the contents it once had) There are various programs some free some not that will provide this functionality.

BE SURE this is the path you want to take if no backup of your files has been made you will not be able to recover any of your locally stored files.

For backup there are many resources availble online that will guide you how to perform backups and or backup certain files. Do a simple search in google "how do I backup my computer" (or whatever your machine is PC/MAC.. etc)

For drive wipes I recommend http://www.diskwipe.org/ It's free and does a good job.

I have attached two sources one is a bit out dated but still useful information.

Hope this helps!

Will removing the hard drive erase everything from my computer?

Bios data will still exist on the computer but it is largely irrelevant to your purposes. BIOS being the system that allows the computer to bootup with such settings as boot order, and basic device drivers.

All personal information is stored on the hard drive.

How do I delete an operating system when dual-booting?

One more point that hasn't been touched on: if you installed grub from Mint last, then delete the Mint partition, you lost the configuration file for grub. So run the grub install from Ubuntu again. Or you can do a grub restore from a recovery disk like SuperGrub or the Ubuntu disk (don't reinstall the whole OS again though). Also, the way I partition disks, is first I usually start with Windoze because that's what came with the PC and it trashes Linux partitions. Then I make 4 partitions (the max under NTFS), and make one partition an extended partition so I can make extra expanded partitions in it under Linux. One partition will be large, and be formatted /home under all operating systems and readable by all. (Not by Windoze unless it's a NTFS.) Then I make some 40-50 GB partitions and install Linuxes in them. I hope you get over your Windows ten fascination soon. If you have some extra partitions, try a nice KDE distro like openSUSE.

Will changing my operating system delete all my files???

Probably the best thing you could do is to run a dual boot system with windows & ubuntu. When you install Ubuntu choose the dual boot option and Ubuntu will repartition your hard drive and install a boot loader (Grub) which gives you the choice of which OS to boot into. When it does this your files on windows will remain intact & you will be able to view & edit them when you are using Ubuntu. If you then want to remove the windows partition you can do this after you have transferred the files to your Ubuntu partition. Here is a web page with instructions how to install Ubuntu:

It always pays to back up any important data whatever you are doing with your computer, I had a hard drive failure recently, it can happen to anyone.
