How Does My New Credit Card Work

Balance transfer on credit card/ how does this work??

Check the fees on the new card. They vary greatly. As for your questions, the new card will give you a check or a method of electronically paying your old credit card. The introductory rate on the balance transfer will be 0%. Of course, there are numerous conditions to this so you should look at the terms very carefully. This is a way of marketing additional credit to people. If you pay off the old card with a balance transfer, you should close that account with the credit card issuer. Your cash back will be paid from the old card as usual. Any benefits program from the new card will be subject to the terms of that program. If you are getting a 0% intro rate on your balance transfer, it is unlikely that you will get a cash rebate on this also.

Best of luck, I hope this helps.

Why didn't my credit card chip work?

I was checking out at Walmart today, and I inserted my credit card when it was time to pay like usual. But the machine didn't even register my card as being inserted. It didn't say "error" or "card declined" or anything like that. It just didn't do anything. Just held the pop up that says "insert or swipe card now". I tried swiping, but it beeped and told me the card must be inserted. Tried inserting it again, still didn't work, didn't pick it up or something. I cancelled the transaction and tried starting all over again, but nothing worked.

I put that card away and used my new debit card, which also has a chip, but with this one the machine worked just fine. I paid for my stuff and left. But I don't understand why my credit card chip wouldn't work. It's even a relatively new card. Any ideas or possible explanations?

How much will my credit score go down by applying for a new card?

For starters, sometimes people who work in the credit industry may not know how credit works because there are too many factors out there.

Credit scores are a very funny thing, you make an inquiry and your score gets lowered, close a card too fast and score gets lowered, and if you don't spend your card for a while your score gets lowered, if you pay just the minimum for too long your score gets lowered, and finally if you pay off your card too fast and your score gets lowered

The best thing to do is get a reputable card such as a Master Card or a Discover Card, spend an amount that you can pay off in about 2 or 3 months and you should be fine....your score should continue to rise as long you make your payments on time and pay it off in a timely manner. Also it would help if you have no more than 2....1 credit card and 1 store card or just 2 credit cards.

I recently received a new Visa card. My last name is misspelled by one letter. Is this a huge problem? Would I have to use the misspelled name on the card if I order something online, for example? Or should I just get a new one?

How do I start a new credit card issuing business?

If you want to become a general purpose credit card issuer, you must be a bank as only banks can become a member of Visa/MasterCard and issue on their networks. Being a credit card issuer means you are actually lending the money and taking on credit risk.  Credit card issuing in the US has proven to be a business with significant economies of scale related to credit scoring, collections, and direct marketing.   The industry has undergone substantial consolidation with a few large issuers (Bank of America, Citibank, Chase, Capital One, etc.)  It has gotten to the point where hundreds of small banks and credit unions offer credit cards that are actually issued by big banks such as Bank of America (through its MBNA acquisition). If Instead you are interested in marketing credit cards with your brand, big banks have programs for issuing "affinity" and "co-branded" credit cards.  Examples include cards that are branded by charities (e.g., Nature Conservancy), colleges/universities, consumer brands (e.g., MLB baseball teams).  The issuers then pay the affinity groups or brands for the use of the brand and often a fee for each new account.  Larger brands often work with banks to create reward credit cards that offer rewards connected with credit card (e.g. airline credit cards with airline miles).  The biggest players in the affinity/cobrand/rewards credit card market are:Bank of America (former MBNA, often does business as FIA Card Services)Chase (former First USA)American ExpressBarclays US (former Juniper)Capital OneUS Bank

Does my Visa credit card CVV (Card Verification Value - credit card security number) change when a new card is issued at expiry?

There's no reason you need to request a new CVV provided that you request a new credit card to replace one that you report as lost, stolen or that you believe may have had its information compromised. This is an important distinction because simply asking for the reissuance of an existing card could result in a new plastic being sent with the same card information embossed and encoded. Additionally, it is not a certainty that your bank will issue a card with a different expiration date if the card you are replacing isn't near its expiration date. As one illustration of this point, one of my primary credit cards has suffered from merchant data breaches three times in the past year and, in each case, the replacement card has come with a different number embossed but the same expiration date.Even when the card number and expiration date change, however, it is mathematically possible for you to get a card with the same CVV. For Visa cards, the CVV is only three digits long, therefore, there are only 1,000 unique numbers that might be generated to create your CVV. Accordingly, your odds of getting the same CVV are at least* 1 in 1,000 each time you request a replacement. As long as your card number changes, however, the old CVV in the hands of your friend will be of no value.* This assumes that your issuer is using all 1,000 unique 3-number combinations for its CVVs. Any elimination of possible combinations (e.g. 000) will cause those odds to increase.

My new and one month old credit card declined?

Even if the card has the Visa or MasterCard mark on it, you may not be able to use it online if the store or web site uses the card owner's name and address to prevent fraud. If you haven't registered the card (and as a minor you may not be able to) then it doesn't have your name attached to it.
