Steroids in major league baseball ISSUE!!!!!!?

Imagine yourselves studying for one of the most demanding tests in your life...the SATs. You know that acing this test is the only way you will ever achieve your biggest dream...getting into Harvard. You work hard for years, driven to succeed. You take the test finally, and you score a 1500. You're in, you just know it. By a combination of your school grades, and your SAT score, there is no way Harvard can refuse you.
But then you find out that there is some underground, mind-enhancing drug out there that many of your peers have been taking to give them an edge. They all score perfect 1600s, and you are left in the lurch. You protest, but are told that the school board, while officially denouncing this drug, has quietly been encouraging its use for years. They knew that they would get all kinds of extra funding if the average test scores in the school were exceptionally high. So they ignore your arguments, and flatly deny your allegations, all the while enjoying the huge profits achieved by feigning ignorance.
Wow, I'm glad something like this could never happen in our schools, but it is happening to our nation's most beloved pastime, baseball.

Can someone explain to me why steroids are bad?

Right to start I'm anti-steroids, but more for the reason that I don't really get sports **don't all start shouting straight away** but there are huge medial reasons as well.

The first thing I'd like to say is the unpredictibility, not all portions of steroids produce the same effect, a small dose may have a more violent effect on one single person than a huge dose on another, and of course there are no tests to see how much a single person should take.

Second thing, for sportspeople who are so concerned about fitness and preformence I don't understand why they would take something so damaging, I got this offline:

Anabolic steroids are extremely unpredictable. Different dosages of different types of anabolic steroids interacting with an individual's unique biochemistry cause widely different and unpredictable results. If a professional baseball player is using anabolic steroids, he may experience a sudden increase in body weight and muscular development, insomnia, irritability, aggressive combative behavior, puffy face, severe acne, bad breath, a yellowing of the eyes and skin, premature hair loss, hyperactivity, and exaggerated mood swings that include uncontrollable outbursts of anger.
Males may also experience testicular shrinkage and can develop female breast tissue on the pectoral muscles. Continued use can result in life-threatening situations involving the liver, cardiovascular system, and brain.

So weight gain, weird, irregualar muscles, hair loss and insomnia are things that all athletes want?

Don't start arguing that if used under supervision and with the right knowledge these things can have positive effects blah . . . . blah . . . .blah.
Fact is, is that steroids are for men who have extremely rare and low levels of testosterone, so why use it in any other case?

Why is taking steroids in baseball cheating?

It is possible to get steriods legally and many of the athletes playing at the professional level could require and benefit from steriods. I just still don't get how people think it's cheating...I mean you still have to have exceptional talent to play at the major league level and if something that helps you DO YOUR JOB (which many people forget) what's the problem, they do get paid for PERFORMING let's not forget. Nutrional supplements are not natural either, they SUPPLEMENT for what the body cannot produce, which is also something steriods can do. And the health effects are not yours do discuss since it is possible for someone to take steriods at a performance enhancing level without serious side effects. Here is the question I pose: If taking steriods is cheating because it creates an uneven playing field, then what about all the technological advances with equipment and training? And after all, what kind of competition has a level playing field?

Why are steroid users banned from any sports?

The short and imprecise answer is that - unless you have a medical need - steroids give you an artificial edge that isn’t rooted in your abilities and commitment. Because of this, steroids’ use is considered cheating. That is the short and imprecise out of the way, now let’s go to the more thorough and detailed answer: even though the above is absolutely correct in theory, there are many instances where steroids’ use is overlooked or turned a blind eye on.It took, for example, many years to finally accuse the Russians of improper steroids’ use and the consequent annulment of lots and lots of medals plus the banning of the Russian teams in almost every Olympic discipline. I am fairly certain that this could have been done in the past and I am also fairly certain it wasn’t done for political reasons. I bet a lot of US athletes have the same sort of issues, as well as many athletes from other countries, probably including Italy, where I come from.

Why do baseball players use steroids? Why don't they just workout and bulk like bodybuilders do, to gain muscle mass and strength?

There is a lot of misconception about steroids and what they do floating around. For an athlete, the major benefit of steroids is that they allow you to recover from workouts much more quickly, meaning you can train harder and more frequently. It always bothers me how people assume steroid users are lazy cheaters who don't want to train hard, when the drugs actually allow them to train harder.Another big benefit to steroids is that they allow you to rehab injuries more quickly, and come back at closer to full strength. When it comes to the economic benefits, Eric Dykstra is right. If you're a middle of the road, replaceable player who is just clinging to a roster spot, taking steroids to get you to the next level seems like a rational decision. Even for a great player, steroids can help you get even better, and stay there longer. Now, as far as asking why don't they just work out? They do. The thing is, when we're talking about professional athletics, we're talking about a group of people who all work hard and are all at or near the peak of physical condition. When everyone is giving 100%, if you want to seperate yourself from the pack, you need to give 110%, and steroids let you do that. Also, just FYI, most of the professional bodybuilders you see do take steroids.

Why do people make such a big deal out of steroids?

It's not cheating if you think logically. You do what you need to do to win. You take the countless legal supplements, you find better workout methods, you find every possible edge over your opponents one way or the other. Steroids are part of that too.

I think every pro athlete knows that he can't become number 1 without taking steroids.

Should fans care if baseball players use PEDs?

No, sports fans are incredibly inconsistent when it comes to this idea of performace enhancers.Read the following scenario:Lets say Player A takes anabolic steroids so he can recover more efficiently after workouts. This helps player A hit more home runs and extends his career by a few years. Thats “cheating” in the eyes of baseball fans.Player B has seen his power number decline over the last 5 years. He figures out that his vision is the issue. Player B has lasik eye surgery. His vision has improved dramatically; he can see the stitches on the ball, hes hitting so well. Player B faces zero scrutiny for having a procedure that increases is performance. Why is Player A a villain and Player B a resurgent national baseball hero? How is artificially improving my vision seen as a smart thing to do but adding artificial testosterone as a means of helping my body recover seen as a method of cheating? It makes no sense and is a testament to the lack of knowledge people have on what steroids actually do.
