How Hard Is It To Become A X-ray Technician

I want to become an x-ray technician?

kba1a is not entirely correct... besides the military, students follow many paths into radiologic technology. Some attend two-year programs based in hospitals, earning a certificate when they graduate. Other students enroll in two-year programs at community colleges or technical schools, earning an associate degree. And others attend four-year programs at universities and colleges, graduating with a bachelor's degree. With nearly 1,000 accredited programs in the United States, there is probably a radiologic technology school near you. No matter which type of program you attend, you won't spend all of your time in the classroom. You'll also work side-by-side in radiology departments with doctors, nurses and experienced radiologic technologists. During this part of your education, known as clinical rotation, you'll have a hands-on opportunity to practice your patient care skills and fine-tune your technical knowledge.

I personally went through a hospital program and highly recommend it. Besides getting great training, it is much cheaper than college programs. After you graduate from an accredited school, you take a national registry exam. All employers are looking for is that you are ARRT-registered. A bachelors degree is only necessary if you want to go into management someday. A degree does not make you a better tech.

Don't do limited scope - very few places will hire you because there are too many things that you can't do. And a registered rad tech is going to make a lot more than a limited tech.

You can find accredited schools here: http://arrt.org/index.html?content=http:... (choose "Radiography")

How do I become a radiology technician?

I recently retired from Radiology-Ultrasound after 47 yrs in Radiology and 43 yrs in Ultrasound . The first thing I will tell you ,We ARE NOT Radiology Technician. The correct name is Radiologic Technologist. You will learn the difference. I know now you must be math/science/physics( not so much chemistry- that is more a nursing thing) heavy in your high school classes. The programs that are out there are quite a bit different from the “olden days” . There are 2 year associate degrees and 4 year BS degrees. Depends on where you are if that 4 year degree will make much difference in pay for a staff tech. However, if you want to advance it (BS) would be your best bet. There are a multitude on Registries that you will have to pass, The first is your Radiology, then there is CT, Mammography, Special Procedures, you can also take further courses to enable you to take registries in MRI, Ultrasound-that itself has numerous registries, Cardiac, Pediatric cardiac, OB/GYN, Abdominal, Breast, Vascular, Musculoskeletal, Then if you are interested in Radiation Therapy another possibility. Good luck

How long does it take to become a radiologist? (x-ray technician)?

The other answerers are right. A radiologist is a medical doctor, who has to complete medical school. A radiologic technologist (the correct term for x-ray tech) is the person who has trained to take the x-rays. Most radiologic technologist programs are 2 years in length. You can go to a college program or a hospital based program. In order to get into a program, I needed many prerequisite classes that I took in a local junior college. Some of these were anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, biology.....

The following site has great information regarding the profession. It is the American Society of Radiologic Technologists. You can scroll down to student recruitment and read more.

Is it worth considering becoming an X-Ray Technician?

Very, although X-ray school is extremely trying to get through, the rewards out weigh the difficulties. You will have to live in survival mode for two years with your head in sand besides eating, sleeping, breathing X-ray physics etc, but when all said and done the time does feel like it goes fast. Once you have your license you will have a well respected new career that you can feel proud of! My 19 year-old son is now pursuing this career as well to follow in his mom’s footsteps.
