How Has The Fast Food Industry Shaped American Culture

What is considered american food?

hot dogs, hamburgers, fried chicken

Why Is American food culture is so… fat ?

From an anthropological point of view humans are "hard-wired" for fats and sugars because our early ancestors rarely found them and so they became prized food choices.

From an American point of view, there are several events that mesh that make American food generally fat and unhealthy. First, America has always been viewed as the land of plenty or the land of bounty. So from about 1800 on we have always had a more is better attitude. Second, most Americans come from very poor countries & families. They came to the US with the illusion that the streets were paved in gold, this was a rich land. So the simple foods they brought were embellished with extras and mixed with other foods from other cultures. Third, after WW I this country fell into the Great Depression and it required many sacrifices just to survive, then that was followed by the Great Dust Bowl and food became scarce. As we emerged from that in the 1950's America amassed more wealth, power, and resources - the result was big food that was good, plentiful, and filling. Put that combination together and you get the foods you are talking about.

US food is not related to UK foods at all. At least I can't think of any - fish & chips isn't on most people's top 10 list. US foods are shaped by every culture in the world, every spice, every plant, every animal. US chefs are always looking for ways to mix and match these many flavors and cultures.

You are right, US food, fast food especially is probably the worst thing ever invented because it has nothing to do with health and wellness.

Good question.

How does Food reflect Culture?

The environment in which a particular culture lives, effects their entire society, in the methods they use to collect their food.
Industries surrounding the acquisition of Food, Clothing, and Shelter, can tell you how far a culture lives from the Equator, and whether they are coastal, plains, or mountain dwellers.

Why do American food and beverages contain so much sugar?

Increases shelf life of the product.Masks taste of other additives. I have also noticed ingredient list is longer for any given food product. Processed foods have more sugar in generalHigh fructose corn syrup is more common than cane sugar and it is cheaper as wellThing that annoyed me most is how sweet breakfast options are: cereals, breakfast bar etcAlso kids are trained to acquire sweet taste by having things like fruit juices, cereals, fruits in sugar syrup etc every single day. Compared to Asian countries, most kids are not exposed to spicy foods, hence they only acquire tastes like super sweet and super salty for the most part

Why are so many American girls so fat?

My cousin is so fat. These days the girls are getting fatter younger. Damn in Europe the girls were hell of alot hotter. Oh my god. I saw this girl in Spain and damn she was hot. American women should start watching what they eat. American women should eat more veggies (not fried) and fruits and less meat and oily foods. Please save me the crap i cant do it i dont have the time. I have a full time job and i find ways to stay in shape. I work hard to keep my body in line. So i want a women does the same or atleast has a decent body shape.

What do American people usually eat at home?

It depends on a lot of factors: where they live, how much money they have, how much processed food they need to purchase, etc.I live in a rural area and have a large backyard garden. I do not personally, but I have neighbors who raise chickens. I also work full-time in a skilled field, as does my spouse. As such our food reflects the time and money we have to invest in our food, and the low cost of land here.Typical breakfast for me is eggs and whole-grain bread with coffee. Lunch is usually lettuce salad and some meat (leftovers from dinner), and dinner is usually either soup or roasted meat and vegetables. I can grow a lot of vegetables, and I can purchase what I can’t or don’t want to grow. I can purchase cuts of meat and cook them and store them safely. I have the time to cook and tend plants, and plan our meals. My youngest sister is a college student who works full-time at minimum wage. She does not have access to a refrigerator or stove, only a microwave and small hot-pot. Because of this, her food is usually highly-processed convenience food. She regularly eats pop-tarts for breakfast, ramen for lunch, and canned food for dinner.

Why are Americans so fat and lazy?

Hey, I'm an American, and I workout twelve hours a week. I'm extremely verile. Most people I know are in good shape.

Anyway, foreigners seem to be under the impression that all Americans are fat. We're not, and those that are shouldn't be discriminated against.

We Americans just eat more, because our food tastes better.

None of this is directed at you in particular. I just don't like stereotypes.
