How Is A Man Being Able To Have More Than One Wife Oppressive To Women

Were women really that oppressed?

Tracey,

I do housework. Maybe it is thanks to appliances, but it is not that unpleasent.

Men did not have the option to live their lives as they saw fit either. They would not be allowed to stay home and take care of the children if that was their desire.

I do not recall expressing that women had it good. I also do not recall saying that I hate women. I was asking if people exagerrate the hardships of those times.

Why were women oppressed over men?

I just dont get it. Why were men the ones able to be educated, work and have freedoms while women had to bear children and stay at home. Where did this start from and what happened that threwout most of history women werent given enough credit for what they did. I've always heard that men outnumbered women as inventors, politicians, revolutionists, philosophers because women were not given an equal chance in the past, but WHY were men superior to women and HOW did society form into what was a patriarchal society .

Is it legal for Indian Muslims to have more than one wife?

Yes. Muslim marriages fall under the Muslim Law Board that’s a watered down version of Sharia and according to that, Muslims can have two wives. Many a Hindus have converted to Islam to utilize this convenience quite conveniently. Dharmendra is a stellar example for that. Since he didn’t want to divorce his first wife, mother of the Deol brothers, he converted to Islam to marry Hema Malini.

Why do Feminists use Witch Hunts as examples of Male oppression of Women...?

I remember reading about this, and how many of the witnesses were actually women trying to get back at other women over some sort of jealousy. Also, the fact of the matter is most men weren't witches so saying they targeted women specifically is a bit of a stretch. Even in some countries like Russia, old men, children and women were burned. I don't remember much, but I did a quick Google search, skimmed through some information and picked a few that I think will help with this question. I'm sure I could find much much more if it weren't 4:17AM and I was extremely tired.

Can a Muslim women marry twice?

Just because it's permitted doesn't mean that it's encouraged or compulsory. Polygyny falls under the permissible (mubah) category.

A Muslim man can marry up to 4 wives, on one condition - that he treats all of them equally. But the Koran does state that a man SHOULD marry only one:

"Marry women of your choice, two or three or four; but if you fear that you shall not be able to deal justly with them then only one." - An-Nisa 4:3

On fairness between women, there is also this verse:
"You are never abe to be fair and just as between women." - An-Nisa 4:129

A Muslim woman, on the hand, is only permitted to have 1 husband.

Such conditions are set based on several reasons (I'm just listing down what I remember reading about this issue) - population imbalances (more females than males, higher mortality rate for males), permitting a woman to be a wife than to be a mistress, identification of the father not easily identified if a woman has more than 1 partner (this was a reason cited before DNA testing became available) and so on.

She can marry again if she is a widow or has divorced.

In conclusion, polygyny (a man having more than 1 wife) is permitted while polyanry (a woman having more than 1 husband) is prohibited.
