How Long Does Cultures Take For A Cat Uti

How long should a cat take Clavamox for UTI?

I took my cat to the ER today because he couldn't urinate. They determined that he has a bad urinatry tract infection with a lot of red blood cells and crystals in his urine. This is his first UTI. They gave me Clavamox in liquid form for him every 12 hours, but they only gave me a tiny bottle, enough for maybe 3.5-4 doses. I thought they'd give him more antibiotic than this. They also gave him an anti-inflamatory medication, but they gave me enough of this to last 4 days. How soon do I need to take my cat to the vet? Will I need more antibiotic than what the ER place gave me? They informed me he'd have to be on a special diet for the crystals as well. How soon should I get him on this diet? Thanks for any help you can provide - I am very worried about him.

How long does it take for a cat's urinary tract infection to clear up once medication has been prescribed?

Thats really young to have that happen. Usually such an infection clears up fairly quickly, often within just a few days, but you want to be sure to keep the cat on his medications and give the full treatment, ior else the infection can come right back and be tougher to get rid of next time.

You also want to ask your vet about anything you can do to help prevent the cat from having the problem again. It is a problem that tends to recur (often for some strange reason, recurring at the same time of year that the cat has gotten the problem before, and also some research has shown that the problem tended to occur more in autumn than other seasons, but had no theory at all as to the reason to explain why autumn to be the most common time of year for a cat to develop UTI.

Some cat breeders have claimed that adding calcium ascorbate powder to their cat's food, or adding alum powder to their cat's food (calcium ascorbate powder used to be tough to find, and I have no idea where it would be found now, and alum powder was sometimes available in the spice section at big grocery stores). There may be products that the vet can recommend for adding to the cat's food, to help prevent the problem from recurring.

If your kitten isn't yet neutered, it may be a good idea to wait until he is at least 9 months old or the testicles are developed, because another possible complication in feline urinary problems in males, has been thought to be that males neutered young might be more likely to developed a plugged urethra because the opening was smaller than the urethra opening of an intact male.

Urinary problems occur in males and females, intact and spayed. Once your cat has had an attack of urinary problems, its a good idea to just get into the habit of checking the litterpan when you clean it, to make sure there is evidence the cat is urinating normally.

Also, make sure the cat drinks plenty of water. Change his water daily, cats like fresh water. You can also mix water into his food if you need to, if you're afraid he isn't drinking enough.

How long does it take UTI symptoms to show up?

Very quickly. It's not like you are likely to walk around with an infection and not know it. Generally within one day.

How long does urine stay good for urine tests?

For drug screens only:Some analytes (cannabinoids for instance) start degrading the moment the specimen is voided. Some degrade in the presence of light (LSD).It’s customary to send specimens by UPS or other courier system which may take several days. In the summer, specimen temperatures may exceed 110 degrees F. Consequently, it’s customary to treat specimens as freshly collected despite issues which may emerge during transport (some become too alkaline because of urea breakdown into ammonia and carbon dioxide; some develop substances which assay as oxidants). Sometimes the lab can be directed to assay anyway; sometimes the lab rejects the specimen as unsuitable. It depends on the lab’s standard operating procedure and agency testing procedures.Recognizing the potential for analytes to degrade over time, it’s customary to ignore cutoffs when repeat-assaying a specimen (for instance at a second lab).NOTE: APPLIES TO DRUG TEST SPECIMENS ONLY.

How long does it take for antibiotics (esp. Baytril) to resolve a urinary tract infection in male cats?

Typically between 1 and 2 weeks depending on the severity of the infection. It is very important to finish the Baytril for the length of time your Vet indicated. Like all antibiotics, in order to be effective, you need to finish the desired dosage. It is best to bring another urine sample to your vet for a follow-up UA (urine analysis) once you complete your Baytril. This way you can be sure another round of antibiotics is not needed. Sometimes bladder infections can be challenging and hard to rid the system of.

Good luck! Hope this helps!!

Vet advice: How long for urinalysis test results?

It's very sad if it takes so long to get tests back when your cat is suffering. Labs get busy and take awhile to process tests.... besides, maybe, having to "grow cultures".

Vet aside, are you feeding your cat dry commercial cat food? It's notorious for causing UTIs. It's one reason why I make my own cat food now. The only times my cats have gotten UTIs was after they ate commercial dry cat foods awhile. Even then, I treated them with (pure) cranberry juice mixed in to tuna. The cats were fine within a day or two. I mix cranberry juice in to their food, periodically, as maintenance, prevention for a lot of things (not just UTIs). So, even if you need to feed your cat commercial foods, give him a couple cans/servings of fish (tuna, salmon, mackerel) each week and add a capful of CJ to it, as maintenance. [Pure/just Cranberry; not blends or cocktails. It can be found at health food stores and in organic/natural sections of most grocery stores. It costs $7 - $9 for a 32-ounce bottle. Stores well (even unrefrigerated, tightly sealed) and is good for other types of infections and fevers. RW Knudsen Juices often offers coupons, at their website, to help lower the cost.]

Can we take Urine culture while on antibiotics?

Ideally, any culture specimen (including urine) should be collected before first dose of antibiotics, coz chances of it being negative increases after initiation of antibiotics ( as such , a culture has sensitivity of only 30-40% under ideal conditions). So,yes, you can still collect urine culture sample, while on antibiotics, but chances of it being positive reduce dramatically. Moreover, your form should mention that culture has been collected while patient is on antibiotics, because the cut off for significant colony count on culture is taken lower (1000/ hpf),compared to 100000/hpf when not on antibiotics. So,result might be reported false negative if antibiotic details are missing while requesting a urine culture.

Does Clavamox usually work for cat UTI?

My cat was diagnosed with a UTI two weeks ago...no crystals were found. Vet just said it was a really bad infection. She prescribed Clavamox for 2 weeks. My cat's last dosage was Friday and I am starting to see some of the same symptoms again. Does it usually take another round of anitbiotics to knock out a UTI? I have the emergency vet clinic number for tomorrow in case he starts peeing just a little in the litter box. Otherwise, I will take him Wed. Thanks for your help.
