Can you power a light bulb via 12v car battery?

Will the bulb work? Yes. IF it's a 12v bulb.
If it's a 110V bulb then no.

How long will it last? 250W at 12V is about 20 Amps (that's a lot). A car battery is in the 60-80Ah range so 3 to 4 hours from full to empty.
Assume you have 12 hours of good sunshine in a day, that's 3 or 4 times how long your battery lasts so the solar panel would need to output 250 divided by 4 or about 75-100 watts or more to fully charge the battery in 1 day (assuming the light was off while charging). That's a fairly large solar panel.
If you want to run the light at the same time as charging then your solar panel needs to output 250w more than the level required to charge the battery.


So the short version is that the basic idea is reasonable but the power of your bulb is way too high. If you used LED lights then you may have a chance of getting the brightness you want with a reasonable size panel and battery.

How long can a car battery last without using the car?

It all depends on the weather conditions. A car battery will lose approximately 1% charge every 1 to 2 days. It can go below 50% charge in 60 to 120 days. Faster if the battery is older. Even when eveything is off there are devices in the car that will continue to draw electricty. The computers, the memory in the radio, the clock, etc.

You should never let the battery get below 50% charge. When a battery goes below 50% charge sulfur crystals can form on the lead plates in the battery. This will inhibit the battery's ability to accept a charger or release energy.

If the battery goes dead in cold weather it can freeze. A battery can freeze at 32F. When a battery freezes it will severely damage the lead plates and the battery will become junk.

If the battery will not be used for an extended amount of time you should attach a battery tender to the battery. This will maintain the battery at 100% charge but will not over charge the battery. If there is no electrical source then remove the battery and bring it to a place that has an electrical source. Also, recently they started selling solar powered battery tenders that do not require an electrical source. All they need is the sun to maintain the battery at 100% charge.

Maintain the battery at 100% charge during storage and it can remain stored for years.

If you drive your car at least once every other week for at least 30 minutes the car's alternator will keep the battery charged enough that you do not need any sort of battery tender.

This module can be programmed standalone (running LUA scripts on board with http://nodemcu.com/index_en.html ) for applications with meagre I/O needs, or can be combined with an Arduino for more complex designs.

Can a vehicle's airbag deploy after the battery has been removed?

I need to replace a 'multi-function switch' (turn signal level) that is attacked to the core of my steering column on my 1998 Chrysler Concorde.

To get to it, I need to take the steering wheel off.
I've been told that it can be a pretty difficult task, and I have limited-to-no experience on car work. (Anyone giving the stupid usual "You could, but just be smart and take it to a dealer - it's not worth it to risk it yourself" answer will be voted thumbs down multiple times--I'm doing this myself, and that's that).

I am wondering if my vehicle's airbags may accidentally deploy, even after I've disconnected my vehicle's car battery. Like I said, I need to take the steering wheel off, so it could be a tricky situation. But I've been told by one mechanic that there's virtually no way airbags can deploy without the vehicle's battery being attached.

Is this true?

It should be wired so it goes off when the ignition is off. If not, it was installed incorrectly.

If that's not the problem, perhaps you have a weak battery?
Get it checked, and get the alternator checked.

Can a jump starter power a fan while camping?

Many jump starters do have AC inverters built-in that can be used to power small electric devices. Whether and how long it would run a fan depends on the power capacity of the jump starter and power requirements of the fan. The problem is the battery capacity on these units would only be good for 1/2 to 1 full day of fan use, then they require 10 to 20 hours to recharge. Charging from your car's battery would eventually run the car battery low enough so you couldn't start the engine, so make sure to recharge the car battery by running the engine for at least an hour.

There are some other options:

1. Get better battery-operated fans. There are 10" 12V/DC fans designed for use in campers and the sleeper of long-haul truck drivers that make a good breeze and run directly from the 12V DC accessory outlet in your vehicle. Some can even run off eight D-cell batteries.

2. Get an AC inverter to convert your vehicle or camper's 12V supply into 120V/AC, then plug-in a regular household fan.

I use two folding 10", 12V fans in my pop-up camper. They were under $20 each at Walmart and do a great job of cooling us down to sleep in hot weather. So far I've used them 2 nights at low speed off the original set of D-cells (about 8 hours/night).

How long you run the fan will determine how often you need to recharge your vehicle or camper battery. You need to make sure the available battery power doesn't drop so low that you can't start the vehicle or damage the battery.

Where does energy for devices plugged into the cigarette lighter port in car come from?

Directly from the battery, or the alternator?
My guess and I could be wrong because I dont know much about cars, it depends on what position your car is in. If it's not on (to the point where the engine isn't on) then it runs directly off the battery. But if the engine was running, it runs off the alternator (and mabe the battery? If so by how much? Half? )

Here I pose another observation question though, most devices that are plugged into the port when the car is not on dont receive a charge anyway. So how is it that the battery is still able to drain? I know your lights can go, but that's beside the question...
