What does it say about him that he would commit such a social faux pas?) carries a different risk profile than a bartender, whose job it is to give out beers.This is also why we say “Don’t get into cars with strangers!” yet we take taxis. The stranger who pulls up beside you and “kindly” offers you a ride is a less likely to be safe. They are, with too high of a probability, up to no good. (But! In another country, where this is standard practice, it’s possibly less dangerous.)Back to candy.On Halloween, strangers giving out candy at the houses is standard practice. The vast majority of people are good people who would never hurt a child. There’s little reason to be suspicious of a person who’s just participating in a classic American tradition.But the grown up who randomly approaches my child, when alone, and offers them candy? They know that this would be interpreted as creepy-as-heck. They know that this is a big no-no. And they’re doing it anyway? What is their agenda?Now let’s say a family is having a birthday party at the park, and they have a big bowl of candy among other things. My kid is looking at the delicious things longingly. The host looks at me to see if it’s okay, I nod, and then offers my kid some candy. Totally fine. Eat up.Intuitively, we all know these things. The issue comes when we oversimplify the reasoning and then it appears to apply to a different scenario.

Confronting someone is not necessarily being impolite or disrespectful. Much depends on why one feels it is necessary to confront another person.
