How Many Of You Find The Novel

How many words are in a novel?

50,000 is the usual minimum. 90,000 words is the average of a novel.
250 words per page, but this is in a published novel size of page. A good way to see how many pages your microsoft word document would take if it was published, is to double space it and use a large font.

Go by other novels of the same genre as yours to find out if the length of yours is similar.

How many pages do you read in a novel you find dull before moving on?

It’s unfortunate to have this attitude because some books need to set up the character as an ordinary person who — through the course of the book — transforms into something else.If the book has a reputation, I will not give up unless life just gets in the way — which happens a lot. Say I read 150 pages on a vacation with 150 to go, but the vacation is over, and then I go back to work and can’t get back to the book, forget all the nuances of the book and the character names, and decide not to go back? What’s the point going back to a book weeks later, if I can’t remember much from those first 150 pages? If the book doesn’t have much of a reputation, I generally will give it about 50 pages to get going — unless I paid a lot for the book, and thus feel financially obligated to trudge on.If it’s an audiobook, it largely depends on the quality of the reader. Better books tend to attract better readers. If I can’t take the voice of the reader, I give up after five minutes.

Which are some 'classic' novels that you find terrible? Why?

The central premise of this question seems seriously flawed to me.To like or dislike a novel does not make that novel ‘terrible.’All that renders it is ‘not to our taste.’If you are well-versed in literature, and well-read in general, you can often tell that a book is well done even if it displeases you. There are some classic works that I dislike. I won’t run down anything simply because I dislike it. I would say, ‘I don’t care of it,’ or ‘I dislike it for this reason,’ but to select a book that many readers have found exemplary, and which has stood the test of time, and to pronounce it ‘terrible’ without fairly extensive literary examination to expose what renders the book ‘terrible’ is a dubious act. Also, one man’s meat is another man’s poison. You or I might find a particular book wonderful, and your neighbor finds it unreadable. I would then ask how good a reader each of us is, but we could all be good readers and some people just dislike our favorite books. The late James Blish, speaking of the value of careful criticism, wrote that if a critic didn’t say what a writer did wrong, but simply panned the work, it wasn’t criticism, but simply abuse. I have always thought those wise words.

Did you find the novel Eragon boring?

At first I was excited. The plot sounded interesting, and I was attracted to the idea that a young writer had published it, because at the time I was young myself and it was a bit inspiring. However, even now, when I go to read it I just get this sense of dread. Although there is an advanced enough plot, the writing doesn't capture my attention. The way things work out are a bit boring. There aren't nearly as many complications as there could be.

I only read the first book in the series. Maybe things get better later, unfortunately because of the first book I will never pick up the sequel to find out.

How many words are in the average novel? If you've written a novel, how many words was it in length?

Generally speaking, for a first time author you want to be in the 80,000 -120,000 range, depending on the subject. Most agents and publishers would hesitate to publish a new author with a higher word count because of the risk involved with a new author. The cost of publishing a 80,000 word novel is far less than publishing a 250,000 word novel. Since you have more than one novel, you might try self publishing one first and really work to gain exposure and loyal readers. If you can show a prospective agent/publisher you have a track record and a platform with a strong reader following, you are more likely to be published.

I have written two novels. The one I am now seeking publication on is 92,000 words. The other is right at 50,000 words because I had to cut a lot out during my re-write, but I am expecting it to be around 85,000 - 90,000 as well.

Less than 8 out of 10 books purchased today are read all the way through to the end. I want people to finish my book and then go pick up my next book.

To build your platform and get to know other writers you can join Associated Content (AC), which is what I did.
Here you can meet new authors, publish smaller pieces (articles) and make a little extra cash while you are working on the all American Novel. I have met some great people through AC. Here is the link:

The other great place is through National Novel Writing Month (which just ended November 30th). Make sure you sign up for next year. People swap novels, ideas, stories, characters, etc! I love it!
