This attitude and assumption (about girl and her parents bearing the expenses of marriage and beyond: dowry), I think started when women used to not go outside and work to get money to the house. Thus father had to bear her expenses (since mom is also woman, who cannot work). After father, it is the life partner: husband. With this setup, TILL the girl is "married" her expenses should be her father's responsibility. And the girl will be said to be married AFTER the day of the marriage. So with this logic, marriage automatically becomes "the girl's expenses" which the father should take care. Coming to the boy's side of story: The boy will be responsible for all expenses of the girl for the rest of her life! So, it is like he is doing her a favor. He is taking a pretty big responsibility. So it's fair if he shies off from just marriage expenses. If you add the total cost of her whole life after marriage (20-30 years on an average) and compare to the marriage cost, the difference will be huge obviously.So, it all boils down to the arrangement of "woman will not work outside or get money for the house".
