How Much Can My Boss Work Me

Can my boss tell me how to wear my hair @ work?

My boss hates for women with long hair to pull their hair up. I sometimes pull mine up in nice barettes or combs. It is always styled. He HATES that. This morning he said he is banning me from pulling my hair up anymore. I have to wear it down. His wife, who works with us, agrees with him. She has long hair and always wears it down. We are the only three in this company and I rarely meet any customers, so I am not exposing my pulled up hair to anyone except my two employers. Is this legal?

How do you tell your boss that there is too much work?

In addition to the good ideas already given in the previous answers you can also ask your boss to prioritise the tasks.I'm thinking something along the line of “Hey boss, got a minute? At the moment I'm working on A, B, C and D. Now I can't finish all four this week, so I would like to know which two are of the highest priority to you / for us at the moment so I can spend my time effectively. “What I'm trying to achieve through this approach is come across as being constructive, considerate, polite, respectful, without just complaining. But I’m still getting the message across that there is too much work for the time given. (That's an important point, there never is too much work, there is only too much work for a set time frame!)Most bosses don't like people who just complain, so try to remain calm and matter of fact when you discuss the work load with them. Terry being constructive. If they force you to complete all 4 tasks in a week (obviously this is just an example), ask them about the level of quality, thoroughness etc. they want to see, who can help. Avoid saying you can't do it, rather try redefining HOW you do it.If your boss has got half a brain they will see that they have a considerate and intelligent employee they shouldn't screw around more than unavoidable.I hope this helps.

My boss gave me a lot of work, but then she complained that she had to pay me overtime. What should I do if I need to stay in this job a bit longer?

Sit down with your boss regarding workload versus time alloted. She can have you do all the work within an amount of hours spread over the week, or she can pay you overtime without protest. She can’t, however, expect additional work done today, without overtime. I certainly don’t recommend rushing, as rushing ultimately wastes material, wastes more time than it saves, raises the incidence of injury that much higher, and creates a need for rework.

My boss told me my register at work was $11 short, is that really bad?

It happens all the time and it's usually from doing something wrong with the register and not handling money wrong. The chances are pretty good that you will be $11 over on another day. Also, do they count the change when they change drawers?

Also be careful of people who say you gave them wrong change. There are some people who say they gave you a $20 when they gave you a $10, but they will come back ten minutes after they bought their stuff. I had one guy do this to me three times before I figured it out. They can tell that you are new. When you take a bill alway say how much it is.

The way they teach people to give change nowadays is wrong. It use to be if someone gave me $20 and it cost $7.85 I would go:

".15 is 8
2 is 10
and 10 is 20"

But now they go "$12.15 change."

BTW I just read one of the other answers and they absolutely cannot take any shortage out of your paycheck. That is illegal in every state.

I started working in Sweden. My boss is sending me on a 2 day efficiency course for working too much. Is that weird?

I'm an engineer from the US and I recently started working in Sweden. I moved there to live with my gf. I started working for a big company and I have noticed some work culture differences. People here are a lot less formal and they don't work as long. Back home it was not uncommon for me to work at least 50-60 hours/week. It's kind of expected, especially if you are new, that you work long hours to prove yourself.
Here it's not like that. The past 3-4 months I have worked like I did back home. My boss called me in for a meeting and wanted to talk about my hours. He said he understood what I was trying to do but that things don't work like that here. He told me:

"You can work 60 hours when it is absolutely necessary but doing it every week means you are not efficient at your job or you have too much to do, in which case you need to tell me. If you one day decide to take a sick leave for exhaustion for instance and the unions or the insurance company start looking at your logged hours, well that's my @ss. I want you to know that I appreciate what you are trying to do, but it doesn't work like that here. You understand?"

The company is going to send me on a 2 day efficiency course as well. I just find all that to be weird. I just find strange because in the US what I was doing was expected, even rewarded, while here it is punished. But what do you do if you have too much to do? I can't bother my boss every time?

While leaving my job, can I tell my boss how much I disliked working with him?

I agree with Quais, Noel, and Alan — Don't do it. Why?It sounds like he wasn't 'evil' and hurt your career, he never bothered with you, that's all. He was a 'neutral' manager.Don't sink to his level, be professional, give your notice, and move on.You'll probably regret it in the future. It always helps if you stay positive about your work experiences and relationships. Because time heals all wounds, people you thought hated you will like and maybe admire you if you leave on good terms. Finally, you never know — this might be his idea of good management. Leave the stars alone and let them perform. For some people, they don't want regular feedback or greetings in the morning. Move on and make your next position one to be jealous of! P.S. One question I would ask my clients: "Did you ever formally request feedback on your performance from your boss? " and "Did you regularly greet your boss with a hearty 'Good Morning!' or wait for them to say it?" Sometimes we need to train our bosses to deliver the responses we require to work better.Hope this helps - Best - Rich Rich Gee Group

How do I tell my boss that he is asking too much of me?

The over-tasking may be your boss's test to see how you handle the situation. As a full time employee time you'll be expected to be assertive, be practical about taking up tasks, manage time well. What you can do here is present some solid data to your boss. You should come up with a fair estimation of time and effort (there are several templates on the web) and let him know how long it will actually take to finish your project, given that you are not getting any other form of help to do it quicker. However, it is also worth exploring if, in case you're a coding intern, you can reuse any existing code that might let you do the work in a week.
