How Much Would A Penny Raffle Take With 500 Numbers

Say a raffle had 1000 entries, and 10 of them are mine - would it statistically be better for my numbers to be consecutive (i.e. 500-510) or randomly spread out across the whole 1000?

If it helps (because I don’t know if it’s the large number of entries, being 1000, that throws people off), think of it this way. Let’s say the raffle had 4 entries and you can hold 2 entries. Some possible arrangements are:Consecutive entries: You have entries 1 and 2Or more spread out: You have entries 1 and 3 OR 1 and 4Assuming the drawing is random, perhaps you can intuitively see that none of these arrangements confer an advantage statistically. In any of those arrangements your chance of winning is still 50:50.It’s the same deal when it comes to the original scenario with 1,000 entries while you hold 10 of them.

At a lottery, from a total of 80 numbers (1 to 80) 20 are extracted from them. I play a ticket with 3 numbers on it. What are my chances that all 3 of my numbers will be among those 20?

The probability of getting the three numbers to be among the 20 selected from 80 depends on two cases:1. You can select one number of the 20 available only one time and that number can not be selected once more. In that casethae probability is the product of the probability of getting the first number to be out of the 20 times the probability of the second to be out of the 19 left times the probability of the third to be out of the 18 left. Hence:(20/80)(19/79)(18/78)=0.0138Hence, you've got less than 1.4% chance to get the three numbers written on card to be out of the 20 selected.This is in the case that the number on the ticket is taken from the 20 selected and is not returned back to the 20 selected from the 80.2. However, if the number returns back then the probability would be (20/80)^3 = 1/64, which is less than 1.6% chance.

Ramos buys some pens and pencils. He buys seven more pens than pencils. Pens cost $0.45 each and pencils...?

Ramos buys some pens and pencils. He buys seven more pens than pencils. Pens cost $0.45 each and pencils cost $0.40 each. If he has $10 to spend, what is the greatest number of each he can buy?

If I enter a contest with a 1 in 10 chance of winning three times consecutively, are my odds still 1 in 10?

I guess everyone has clarified and explained the answer to you. So, I would try to give some concept for difference between finding the probability collectively and finding it for each game.Let me give you two different probability problems to understand it.You want to go for three consecutive games and want to know the odds of winning at least one game.You want to go for three consecutive games and want to know the odds of winning in the 1st game/2nd game/3rd game.In the first case, the probability will not be 1/10 for three consecutive games. Why? That's because you are not looking at one game at a time, but looking at three of them.Let's find this probability for youP(losing) = 9/10P(losing all 3 games) = (9/10)^3 = 729/1000P(winning at least one game) = 1 - P(losing all 3 games)P(winning at least one game) = 1 - 729/1000 = 0.271In this case the probability will change if you are done with the first game. Since your chance will change from winning at least one game out of three to winning at least one game out of two.In the second case, as everyone has already explained brilliantly, the probability will remain the same for every game. Why? That's because the outcome of each game is independent of the other. You tried the first game the probability of winning it was 1/10. You tried the next game after that; the probability still remained 1/10.

A boy has a 5 rupees coin, 2 rupees coin, and 1 rupee coin in ratio of 3:4:5. If he has an amount of ₹224, how many 1 rupee coins does he have?

Given that a boy has 5 rupee coins , 2 rupee coins and 1 rupee coins.Let the number of 5 rupee coins be x , and number of 2 rupee coins be y and number of 1 rupee coins be z.Total amount is 224 rupees.Hence, 5x + 2y + 1z = 224Now our aim is to find the values of x , y , z such that the above equation satisfies.Given that , the 5 rupee coins , 2 rupee coins and 1 rupee coins are in the ratio of 3 : 4 : 5Hence x is a multiple of 3 , y is a multiple of 4 and z is a multiple of 5Therefore , x = 3a , y = 4a , z = 5a , where a is any natural number.Substitute the values of x , y and z in our first equation.5x + 2y + 1z = 2245(3a) + 2(4a) + 1(5a) = 22415a + 8a + 5a = 22428a = 224a = 8Our aim is to find the number of 1 rupee coins.Number of 1 rupee coins as per our above theory is 1z. we know that z = 5a. We also know that a = 8.So number of 1 rupee coins is := z= 5a= 5(8)= 40If you found out any errors in the above solution, please let me know.Thank you.

I have more than 10000 JP miles in my Jet Privilege account. How and where can I put them to good use?

Jet airways is a bit sucky when it comes to redemptions. IMHO they offer mediocre redemption rates on most domestic sectors whereas their international redemptions rates are probably amongst the stingiest in the airline industry globally. The sweet spot is somewhere else.... read onWith Jet Airways you really have two options to use your miles.Upgrade an existing ticket to business classBuy a domestic ticketNow most people consider option one to be stupid, I however disagree. There is value at times when upgrading to Business for domestic flights. It's especially useful when you are carrying a truck load of luggage and you exceed the 20KG limit  you get in economy. Paying for an extra 15 KGs is very painful and you're better off using the miles to confirm an upgrade to business and make use of their 40KG allowance. Where Jet is very decent is in upgrading to business class, especially on international routes. Upgrading a round trip to Dubai to business costs 33,000 miles, Colombo costs 28,800. This is my recommendation - save your miles for. Wait for a bit and accumulate some more. And then use them for international flights. Read here about flying business on international routes - Rishabh Mukherjee's answer to What is Jet Airways business class like?Coming to option two. 10K miles would fetch you a return ticket in a 500 mile radius. So the question is when should you use the miles to book ? Jet Airways sells JP miles at Rs1.25 per mile. If your flight costs more than Rs 1.25 per mile flown, you would in theory save money by using miles to buy the ticket. However it's also very likely that the flight is full and there are no award tickets available anyways. I think the biggest wastage of miles is to buy economy class seats on domestic routes.

Should you buy lottery tickets?

The reasons NOT to buy lottery tickets are that your chance of winning is virtually zero. For the sake of example, assume that the lottery consists of 100 lottery tickets. Buying one ticket then yields you a 1/100 = 1% chance of winning. In reality, though, any lottery contains a MUCH higher number of tickets than 100, effectively reducing your chance of winning to almost zero. I.e. your chance of winning should definitely not be your sole reason to play the lottery.The reasons you SHOULD buy lottery tickets are if you can spare the money and you find the suspense to be thrilling. If it adds joy to your life. Basically, if you enjoy playing the lottery and you can spare the money, why not do it?
