How Often Do Police Chases Happen In Places Like Los Angeles

In Los Angeles, we have a high speed police chase like every couple of weeks. Is it like that in other areas?

No, in “small” municipalities, they just shoot them and don’t tell the media. Did you see the police chase in Glendale last week? They had him boxed in, they had guns out and were yelling at him to get out of the car (ignoring the fact that the police car was up against his door. ) the eye in the sky and everyone there with a cell camera shooting live made it difficult to shoot or otherwise incapacitate him. And he got away.

Why does Los Angeles love police pursuits so much?

Why does Los Angeles love police pursuits so much? From the newscasters excitedly doing play by plays to the cops that sometimes seem to let them drag on on purpose, not stopping the drivers when they can clearly take them out, to the drivers who are getting their 15 minutes of fame, it seems to be like a part of the culture there almost.Southern California is a “perfect storm” for car chases. Huge population, huge freeway system, LOTS of news outlets with helicopters, plenty of good weather for the helicopters to fly in, and a population that has a love affair with the automobile.Cops don’t like pursuits. Pursuits just happen to cause a lot of eyes to be glued to a lot of television screens, and Southern California has enough good flying days, cars, and roadways to be able to cover crap ton* of car chases.Further, Angelinos know the roads, and they know the best route to get anywhere. If you ever watch a pursuit on TV with an Angelino, you’ll hear something like, “Why did he get off on Roscoe? Nordhoff has more options!” Also, “I was just there! I gotta call Tito and find out if he can see the chase!”It’s just human nature. Also, I’m wondering what you mean by “not stopping the drivers when they can clearly take them out.” This presumes you are intimately familiar with police tactics, the abilities and training of the pursuing officer, and the policies of the pursuing agency. Just a thought.* “Crap ton” was a shout out to Ross Trittipo — welcome back.

What would happen if I try to outrun the police in Los Angeles?

You would lose. Nobody outruns the ghetto bird the radios and on foot our ballistic K9s. Much better chance going all John Dillinger in a smaller local that cant afford a bird and way less cops. I worked in LA its where I retired from. With all the compressed agencies of CHP Sheriffs LAPD and all the small LA depts in a tiny area you will have 30 cars on you immediately.

How dangerous is being police officer or detective lapd?

The deadliest states for law enforcement officers are actually in the south. I can't remember exactly which ones, but I want to say Texas and Florida are near or at the top of the list.

You may get some people here who say LE is not dangerous because more taxi drivers or 7-11 clerks are killed per 100,000 people than LEO's. That's true, but they're ignoring the extensive number of disabling injuries that occur in law enforcement that do not happen nearly as frequently in those other jobs. There are officers who become vegetables from bad car accidents and assaults, or who lose limbs in accidents, etc.

Anyway, the job is dangerous. Your job is to go into high intensity, high stress situations and diffuse them. Other times, your job is to do something very boring. A wrong move in those high stress situations could mean you are killed, seriously injured, or someone else is killed or injured.

If you really want to get a feel for LE, do some ride alongs with your local police departments, or even the LAPD if that's where you're interested in going.

How often do people actually get away during car chases? I’ve never actually heard of anyone actually escaping the police… does it happen?

Not as often as they used to, that’s for sure. Decades ago, police in cities and towns often gave up the chase if the perp was just speeding, and was not a felony pursuit. These days, everyone gets involved and they will hunt you down.Still…sometimes a chase is called off for reasons of safety. It sort of depends on the nature of the chase. If the fleeing car is wanted for something else besides speeding, or is hitting other cars or forcing people to jump out of his way, then the cops will often keep up the chase. Then they start asking for cooperation from other departments to stop the person fleeing them.I think a cop could better answer this question, though. I’m just a guy who writes sci-fi occasionally and edits books. What the heck do I know about it?Not much, except I managed to get away from them once. (*laughs*)

How much money should I take to Los Angeles?

You're not actually taking cash, are you? Using cash in LA is like walking- it makes people suspicious. Meals can range anywhere from $5 at a taco stand to hundreds of dollars in a top-end restaurant. It depends on what you want to eat and how much you want to spend. There's lots of looking around you can do for free. The Venice Beach area is worth a look. You could spend less than $50 a day including gas or as much as you are willing to spend.
