Age limit is 18 for rifles, and 21 for handguns. You have to pass a test (70% or better) to get your CALIFORNIA Handgun Safety Certificate, then you can buy 1 handgun a month. Cert is good for 5 years, then you have to renew if you wish to purchase again. No limit on number of long guns, but there is a 10 day wait for background check from ATF on all firearms in CA. The then goes to the DOJ well they do an additional background check and you wait 10 days, unless denied you go back to the FFL to pick up the firearm you paid for. You handgun generally has to be on this list Roster of Handguns Certified for Sale although you can get off roster ones sometimes but they cost you at least 2 times as much as in any other state. Scary looking things are illegal and your can only buy magazines that are restricted to 10 rounds, but thats up in the air again. You can not save money buy buying ammo in bulk online and having it shipped to your home. Starting July 2019 you have to pay extra for your ammo do to having to pay for a background check on it. I heard this shall also include you cant buy a caliber that you dont have a gun in. The answer is the California Operation of Law or Intrafamilial Handgun Transaction. This process allows adult children (ages 18-20) to take possession of handguns. Here's what yo do. Your mother/father/grandmother/grandfather would purchase the handgun. They would then fill out the intrafamilial transfer paperwork (link below), submit it to the DOJ (along with a check for $19), and you'll will eventually receive a notice stating that the transfer has been processed and a handgun is now registered to you.. This process is how I had my handguns registered to me when I was 18-20 years old.

Provide firearms safety card, drivers license, proof of residence (pg&e bill, car registration), fill out a bunch of forms swearing you aren't a criminal, provide thumbprint, buy gun lock ($10) if not included or provide gun safe reciept/sworn affadavit. They will do a background check. Now wait 10 days and you can go back to the shop and perform your safe handling demonstration and fill out receipt of firearm and thumbprint that too. After that is finished, you may leave with your new gun! I know this process well. Oh, and you can't buy more that 1 handgun every 30 days. Last time I was in a gun shop: today. Time before that: yesterday.

You will not find these in a gun store, they require special paperwork and licensing. There is a form you need to fill out from the BATFE, they need to approve it first before you can buy the gun. not all states allow NFA automatic weapons or other NFA weapons, so even if you're over 21 some places you just can't buy one period. In California for handguns 21 years and HSC card, long guns 18 years, AW weapons you can either use a work-around or move to another states, all NFA items except AOWs are banned, 21 for any NFA item.
