How Old Do You Have To Be To Work Ar The Mason Jar

Why do mason jar lids come in two parts?

Why do mason jar lids come in two parts? The flat seal part of the lids should be discarded after use, but threaded rims can be reused if they are not damaged. Making the lids in two parts reduces the cost of using the mason jar multiple times. Also, during the canning process, the seal is put on the jar first, and the vacuum created by the cooling contents of the jar ideally makes the seal between jar and lid airtight. If the seal is defective, this will be visible because the rim is not screwed on until after the seal has set and the jar has cooled. If the seal is good, the rim can be screwed onto the jar to hold the lid on securely. If necessary, the rim can be unscrewed later, without lifting the lid, in order to check the vacuum and verify that the seal has not leaked.

How old is a mason jar with the star on it? Reads top to bottom "Mason (star emblem) Jar".?

to be an antique it must be older than 100 years.
Do you have any antique or collectables stores in your area?
If so, go take a look at what they have...They might have the same kind of jar and you can see what they want to sell it for. Or take your jar and ask them about it.
Does yours look like this?

How do mason jar lids work and how long can the keep food preserved for?

The food inside is placed there when it is very hot. The top is placed on top of the jar, and as the contents cool, they occupy a little less space, causing a partial vacuum. The top has a rubber seal. As the vacuum forms, the top is drawn down and thereby seals the food from air.It will last as long as the seal holds, and that will depend on ambient temps etc.

What do you call the tool you use to open a mason jar?

I'd use one of these:And I'd call it a can opener.

How can I light a fire in a mason jar?

Have you ever seen a cooking oil candle? Its really just a jar with some oil in it (olive oil or cooking oil would work) with a wick in it. In the commercial variety, there's a plate made of thin plastic that floats on top of the oil with a wick in it. The wick goes down into the oil and soaks it up. The flame is at the top, which pokes up out of the oil.

You could rig up some way to keep the bottom end of the wick in the oil and the top end out. Like fill the jar half full of marbles or pebbles or even gravel, stick the wick in it, and pour in enough oil to cover the bottom of the wick. It will burn about like a candle. But it's relatively safe. If you knock it over it might make a mess but it won't burn the house down.

Where do you get the wick? You could pull it out of an old candle, with a pliers. Or use the wick from a birthday candle. A little rolled-up piece of cotton cloth would work.

Is it safe to microwave a Mason jar?

Another one I'd never thought of. Are you trying to make me paranoid. I would have put one in the microwave with out thinking -- I'm pretty sure nothing would happen.
Edit -- I was just thinking -- make sure you have rinsed all the moonshine out of it, that stuff could blow up. You have to be sure and drink every last drop.

How can I open an old Mason jar with a rubber gasket without breaking the glass?

If it is the kind with a metal lid held down by a ring, then punch a hole in the lid with a can opener. If it is older style with a gasket ting that has a stick-out tab then grab that tab with a pliers and pull it to the side to get it out.

Sometimes if you did a bad canning job and have dried syrup or jelly sticking like glue then scrubbing ot soaking with hot water will get rid of that adhesive sweet stuff.

How do you make hanging mason jar lights?

You need a light, such as a LED wired to a small battery or a tea candle. You need a mason jar. Then if you wanna hang them, a hemp rope does the job well, or any other rope you have handy. You could make one out of a plastic bag or a plastic bottle I believe if you're really low on budget and love recycling. Or a wire, or whatever. Technique: rope around the 'screwing spiral' on the top, to hold it, and one across, to create a handle. You are then left to be creative on the shade. You can use any colors you have handy that will last on glass. Nail polish, for example, or glass contoures or acrylics. You can use stickers that will allow some light to pass and dress the whole jar into white paper. I used white paper on the inside of the jar, held together by the jar itself. There were simple drawings on the inside, so the jar was perfectly white when unlit, and the drawing would show when lit. The above technique would work with newspaper and white paper, I believe it'd be awesome. Or perhaps just double-layered artwork out of normal white paper. Anything that looks cool will do the job. Parchment paper, perhaps. Masking tape also works well, wind in a spiral around the jar. The paper can be put on the outside or on the inside of the jar.
