How Real Is The Danger Of Kidnapping In Mexico

My brothers been kidnapped in Mexico and they re asking for a $6000 ransom. What can we do?

Early today my mother received a call that my brother has been kidnapped in Mexico. They re asking for a $6000 ransom if we don t pay today they ll double the ask to $12000. What do we do? He s not an American citizen. He s a citizen of Honduras. We don t have that kind of money. How do we deal with this kind of blackmail?

Kidnapping in mexico?

Kidnappings in Mexico involve 2 types of people. Those involved in drug gangs, and rich business men or family members kidnapped for ransom. No one is just randomly kidnapped. Americans are not targets. Blonds are not targets. Cancun is safer than most cities in the U.S. There are over one million Americans living in Mexico...many of them blonds...and there are many blond Mexicans. I am a blond American living in Mexico and know many others of all ages. You will be absolutely fine.

What are my chances of getting kidnapped in mexico?

Im 100% white and have the opportunity to stay 4 days in the summer in mexico with some friends. all of them are mexican. However, i have been told by numerous mexicans that i stand a good chance of getting kidnapped due to me being white. they said even if i didn't seem rich, they would still kidnap me cuz my parents are obviously have money. What parts are dangerous and what are the chances i get kidnapped. i heard the police is corrupt.

How common are kidnappings in Mexico?

If you are wealthy and you like to show people how much many you have, the chances of being kidnapping are higher than you think. Organized crime in Mexico won't kidnap people who can't (as their point of view) pay the rescue. So unless it's some kind of revenge, they won't kidnap you if you don't look wealthy, rich, you know what I mean. By the other hand, organized crime tends to assume that all the foreigners have a lot of money.

Is Mexico dangerous ?

You shouldn't go alone. It's very dangerous right now. If I didn't have black hair, I'd dye it black, and I'd hire a private bodyguard who could handle a pistol very well.

Is Mexico more dangerous than Argentina?

yes without a doubt. of course it depends on where you are and what you mean by dangerous. in terms of kidnapping, Mexico is far and away much more dangerous. just be careful crossing the street in Argentina which suffers from a significant amount of pedestrian fatalities. Argentina is overall though extremely safe. the other suggestion is that if you are in the neighberhood of "la boca" try to leave by nightfall as it is a rougher neighberhood.

Do you always get worried about getting kidnapped in Mexico City?

Nope. Never. Not once.Twenty-five years ago, after ATMs started showing up around the world, tourists and businessmen were sometimes victimized by “kidnappers”, who were merely street hoodlums, no kidnapping involved, and they’d be frog-marched around to as many ATMs as there were in the neighborhood, and forced to withdraw funds.Until, like, 1995, when banks realized what was going on, and stopped authorizing more than about $300 in any foreign city after sundown. So your paranoia is over two decades old, and was never a real thing anyway, just a form of a hold-up by people who were clearly smarter than you.And hey, guess what? People don’t get kidnapped in Mexico unless maybe they are the girlfriend of a cartel narcotraficante. You know where they do get kidnapped? Number one spot in the world, after Muslim countries where they get sold as 8-year-old wives? The U.S. of A. Yeah, the U.S. is where children get kidnapped, usually by their fathers or their mothers’ ex-boyfriends.So lay off Mexico, you racist P-O-S.

Is being kidnapped still a legit concern for Americans traveling abroad?

Well, “abroad” is… pretty broad. In 99% of the world, you’ve got zero cause for concern. There are definitely countries where kidnapping is a real issue, but in every single case, the likelihood of you being specifically targeted either as an American or as a tourist isn’t any greater than you being a local. The idea that bad guys are specifically out to kill, mug or kidnap Americans — yeah, sorry, that’s just another example of Americans thinking we’re #1 in everything. In countries like Mexico, Haiti, Brazil, Colombia, even India, the overwhelming majority of people getting kidnapped and held for ransom are locals: often rich locals, which you definitely are not. The thing is, even in a country like Colombia — formerly one of the most dangerous countries in the world, but a lot safer these days — you’re still not in very much danger in the major cities. In 2019, you’re actually safer in Cartagena and Medellín than you are in parts of certain U.S. cities. Times change, but perceptions take forever to catch up.Even within a country like Mexico, where kidnapping definitely is not a myth, it’s not like the risk is equally spread out. Parts of Mexico should be avoided, other parts are absolutely great to visit. But it’s just counterfactual to say that kidnappers in Mexico or in any other country are mostly interested in nabbing Americans. They aren’t. When it comes to their targets, they’re pretty much equal-opportunity criminals. Kidnappers don’t check your passport and say “Oh, woops, this dude is from Finland, so we’ll let him go!” Not a chance. A rich Chinese or Saudi tourist who falls in their path is a mouth-watering morsel, as much as any luckless or naive schmuck from the USA.(PS — same with terrorist attacks. Look up the death toll in Europe over the last 10 years or so if you think terrorists are exclusively interested in butchering Americans. The vast majority of victims in Paris, Nice, Berlin, Barcelona and elsewhere were definitely not U.S. passport holders. Kidnappers and terrorists are mostly interested in making money and aggrandizing their twisted egos. Your nationality is largely irrelevant to that. Plus, they butcher and kidnap plenty of their own people into the bargain.)
