Can I be a dual citizen of the US and UK?

Whether YOU can is something I don’t know.. but:if you are already a USA citizen, then you can apply for British citizenship. If you are successful, the British government will not require you to renounce your other citizenshipsif you are already a UK citizen, then the US government will require you to renounce your other citizenships if you are granted US citizenship… the British government will ignore this, and continue to renew your passport :-) However, the US authorities could deem this a violation of your oath, and strip you of your newly acquired US one.

Can I be a dual citizen of the U.S. and Bermuda?

US/UK Dual Citizenship?

If you were born after 1983, you are both British and American and just need to apply for a passport.

If you were born before 1983 you are not automatically British as your nationality could only be passed on through your father or by birth in the UK but you can now apply for British citizenship by registration. This takes about two years from start to passport. I recently helped someone do this.

Is is true that if you become a citizen of another country you give up your status as a citizen of the US?

No.

The only way to give up your American citizenship is to renounce it to a government official. America recognizes dual citizenship.

Other countries sometimes do require you to have given up your citizenship before becoming a citizen of there country, the UK isn't one of these.

Can a dual US/UK citizen be knighted by the Queen?

"I WAS born and raised in the US, but because my mother came from the UK, I am legally considered a citizen of both."

You are entitled to become a British citizen, but you have to actively do so. Unless you've gone through the process then you're not a British citizen.

I think...

How do I become a British citizen if I'm an American?

You can't just travel to the UK & apply for citizenship - it doesn't work that way in any country - if you have no claim to citizenship through a parent (parent born in the UK) then you would need to legally live & work in the UK for several years

The US & the UK both allow dual citizenship so you don't need to renounce your American citizenship but first you need to get into the UK legally

The easiest way to get legally into the UK is if you can claim citizenship of another EU member, citizens of other EU member states have the right to live & work in the UK, there are some restrictions on countries that joined in 2004 & 2007. Citizenship of another EU member state would also allow you to come & go as you pleased with the necessity to spend several years in the UK waiting to become eligible for British citizenship.

If you have no claim to British citizenship or citizenship of another EU member state then you will require a visa to live & work in the UK but these can be difficult to obtain. You would need to have a minimum of a University degree & be very talented or highly skilled.

Under current rules once you've been resident in the UK for 5 years you become eligible to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) which is more or less the British equivalent of permanent residence. Once you've held ILR for a year you become eligible to apply for British citizenship by naturalisation - it could take the better part of 6 or 7 years.
