Why do websites like YouTube and Reddit change their layouts so much?

I’d like to assume for YouTube at least (I don’t use reddit much) that it’s to improve “User Experience”. For instance, recently YouTube started having video comment/response notifications as overlays rather than actually going to that video and automatically scrolling down like before. A few months ago they also added the ability to scroll down while in full screen mode which once again makes it easier for people navigate - hence better User Experience.

Why do YouTube keep changing the look of their layout?

Because optimization is critical to the success of YouTube. The longer people stay on the platform the better. The user experience plays a significant role in overall use of YouTube. A small increase in the length of a visit for all of their users increases revenue.Additionally, every platform makes changes. At first they are a bit unsettling because they are new but after a short period of time they become the norm. It’s just progress.

How can I get back to the old layout of YouTube 2018?

It won't be easy, and you won't be able to get 100% of the way there, because Google has likely changed things that you can't fix after the fact, but…You could install a Javascript extension like Greasemonkey - Add-ons for Firefox or Tampermonkey for Google Chrome and a CSS browser extension like Stylus - Add-ons for Firefox or Stylus for Google Chrome, and, using a combination of scripting and styling, rearrange YouTube to your specifications. This, of course, assumes that you are fluent in both JavaScript and CSS. Not to mention HTML. I have been making my living by writing and editing HTML (and CSS and Javascript) since 1994, and this is a monumental task that even I would not even begin to approach.By doing so, you would set yourself up for a lifetime of chasing the numerous and frequent changes that Google will make to YouTube over time. They never stop “improving” it, so by deciding to rearrange the page in your own browser, you would be taking on the frustrating and unrewarding task of keeping it up to date. This would be an exhausting and fruitless task, unfortunately. That said, I have several hundred Stylus stylesheets and TamperMonkey scripts for modifying various pages that I use in one way or another. I am not doing anything nearly as ambitious as trying to reproduce an earlier version of YouTube, but I do modify Pages regularly to my satisfaction. It is from this experience that I know that you will spend the rest of your life chasing changes.

What is the right time to customize the layout of my YouTube channel?

Customize your content once you have ten or more videos that you can lay out nicely. In the beginning, just leave your latest video or other stuff there.First hint even before I answer: Playlists are treated like an individual video. Only video uploads and playlist create unique IDs which counts as an upload. Create playlists on different days than you upload and Youtube is happy because you look consistent even when you don’t upload a new video. When I started my Invention Therapy Youtube Channel, I had a completely outdated view of how the system worked. I was still thinking that views and subscribers were the key to success like back before 2013!If I was starting over, I would do things very differently. That’s why I will give you some really important tips.We all know the following things that any knucklehead could tell you:Create good content.Upload consistently.Make thumbnails that interest people.Share on social mediabla, bla, blaWhat they don’t tell you:Bad content is popular too!If you upload consistently but don’t get views, your next videos will die!Everybody competes with good thumbnails so do something different.Search optimization with titles, tags and descriptions will get you some views but not nearly as much as suggested views. The Youtube algorithm is a mystery even to the experts. They change their advice every few weeks because the AI changes on the fly!How to improve your chances:Upload consistently but at a pace that works for you.Make each video count! Uploading for the sake of content or to provide consistent content can actually hurt your rankings. If Youtube isn’t promoting your videos, you need to prove them wrong and get out there on the internet and share anyway you can.Don’t worry about subscribers, they come naturally with views. It is a snowball effect. The more views, the more subscribers, even more views.Extra tip:I use Quora to generate views and clicks back to my Youtube channel and shows like this laser cutter video. If you can provide good content to other websites, people shouldn’t mind the self promotion. Value in return for value!I hope you enjoyed this answer.Richard
