How to combine .mts .avi .mpg .mp4 videos on a mac?

First off, please forget .mpg or .avi file formats completely. They are of no use whatsoever here.

iMovie can import the H.264-encoded video and AAC-encoded audio data stored in the .mts *container format* of AVCHD camcorders, but it cannot do this directly from .mts files (don't ask me why Apple makes it such a problem...) You need to rewrap – not convert/transcode – the video and audio data contained in the .mts file into an .m4v file (same as .mp4 file), which iMovie can then import.

To do this, download the freeware tool 'RewrapAVCHD'. This tool requires another software called 'Perian' (a popular freeware decoder package) that you need to install first.

Perian: http://perian.org
RewrapAVCHD: http://www.timesforfun.de/download.html

RewrapAVCHD is very simple. Launch the application click 'Rewrap', then select the .mts file. It can only take on one at a time, so with 20 files, you'll need patience :) However, I would de-select the option to delete the original file, just in case something goes wrong (you don't want to lose the original source file.)

In iMovie, you can then import the .m4v files using File > Import Movies. If everything goes right, iMovie will be optimizing the imported files (takes a while). Once this is done, you have 3 copies of the footage: the mts file, the m4v file, and the imported work copy that iMovie stores in the 'iMovie Events' folder within your 'Movies' folder. I suggest you archive either the original .mts files or the m4v files, e.g. by burning them on a DVD or moving them to an external hard drive, then delete the .mts and .m4v files from your Mac.

To edit the imported clips in iMovie, you then create a project ...

PS: Please ignore ALL of the spam answers that usually come up whenever anyone just mentions the words video and converter and that lead you only to download some trial version of commercial conversion programs. These conversion programs always add unnecessary quality loss to the original material, no matter what 'wonders' they promise you.

Hi, appreciate it if one could point me to any known best audio-video merger software. A practical software that can merge a video file (HD) in mkv format with a separate audio file without downgrading the HD Video quality. My goal actually is to replace the audio within the HD video (a film) which has a Spanish language by another English audio I extracted from same title video with lower video resolution. So the point is, I'd like to retain the HD video quality because the other video with same title (English) has lower resolution.
