South Africa's cellphone system works differently to countries like the USA. On what we called prepaid, you buy airtime for a certain amount (eg R30), you can then use that airtime to make calls, send sms's, mms's, and surf the internet. Prepaid phones in SA don't really get free minutes (except some special offers) calls cost about R1 to R2 per minute(for calls inside SA). International sms's cost about R2 (from what I remember). Also, on prepaid, once your airtime balance reaches zero, you will not be able to make calls or send sms's or go online. You will need to recharge, as you don't get a bill at the end of every month. If you want a cellphone which you can keep using and get a bill for, you will need to sign a contract with one of SA's cellphone operators. Hope that helps.

Your best bet will be to buy a satellite phone. They are very expensive as are the calls to and fro but it will get by better than a cell phone. You can look on the net to find a dealer closest to you.

How do I add minutes to my South African pre-paid cell phone
I have a tracfone, sending or recieving text takes 1/2 unit, making or recieving calls uses your units, also if you call someone and they don't answer the minutes are taken depending on how long you let it ring. One thing about tracfone, I'm not sure about the other kinds, if you use say 4 minutes and 2 seconds, they will round up to 5 units so you lose almost a minute or unit sometimes!.
