Should I count calories?

I'm trying to lose weight, and I've read on here that you should count calories. I don't want to because it seems a bit tedious, but would it benefit more if I did? Or should I just make sure that I eat healthy? Oh, and could you guys tell me exactly how to do it? I mean like how are you supposed to know how many calories are in an apple? And what my mom cooks for dinner?
