How To Find Jobs Not Posted On The Internet

How did people find jobs before the internet?

People networked - it was and still is common to get a job through somebody you know without the internet being used. You got headhunted - i.e. an employer employed an agent to search for somebody suitable. Or you had some business contact and the company approached you directly. You registered with an employment agency - it’s just that you generally actually went there and filled in forms rather than did it over the internet. That still happens, especially for professional jobs such as lawyers, accountants, engineers etcYou went through a careers office at your university who supplied you with the information on who to apply to and how and where to apply. (That’s how I got my first job.)You looked up information in a library and wrote to companies by post, starting with a request for an application form and details of how to apply. You answered advertisements in newspapers. You answered notices on bulletin/notice boards - e.g. in supermarkets or outside libraries. You went to the government employment offices - e.g. the Job Centre or Labour Exchange. You went to companies directly and asked what vacancies they had. Some companies had a blackboard outside with a list of casual jobs.

How can I post something on the internet that everyone can read?

What is this mysterious website that "everyone" is reading... but that I do not know of? Oh, come on... you know the site... it's the site you expect to post on.

Wait... you don't know of any site? Well, how can you get "everyone" to read what you post?

Look.

There are a metric ton of news sites out there that allow people to make comments on news stories without having to sign up for anything. But, then "everyone" won't be reading it, will they? Only people interested in that particular news story will be exposed to it, and then only the people interested in that particular news story that bother reading the comments will be exposed to it.

You want to post a comment AND a request. That is interesting. You don't indicate what you want to comment on, and you don't indicate what you want to request. That desire for privacy and secrecy indicates that what you want to say might not be appreciated.

The problem you face is that the people who put up the sites where others can make public posts, are in the end responsible for the content of the sites. This means that they have to have a way to keep their sites clean and free of content that can get them in trouble. Thus the need to sign up for a majority of them, just to be able to post something. This is the part that is interesting though. You don't want to have to sign up for anything (like you had to sign up for Yahoo Answers) just to comment and request what you want... which means at some level you don't want to be held accountable for what you say and ask for.

There are a few sites out there..

How do you find a job with no phone?

No, prepaid phones aren't cheap so don't put yourself down about that.

Go to the library. They have internet access and all you need is a library card, which is free.

Talk to the department of vocational rehabilitation or the department of health and social services...they can help you with resumes, programs you might qualify for to get you on your feet and even cover phone expenses, etc. They have job boards too.

Go to Goodwill or Salvation Army...they help people all the time who don't have phones or internet access or even a home. They can help you.

Ask churches. You don't' have to be a member to get help from a church. Many have programs that could help you.

Why does a job posted on indeed not show up on the company website?

Here’s a dirty little secret that Indeed will admit to - many of their job listings are not current. In fact, the reason why that is the case is because they scour the Internet for job listings much like how Google indexes the web and often post listings which are way past their prime (no pun intended). Fortunately for the company, they are not charged for those listings, but they are still a source of frustration when a bunch of people apply for a job that was filled months before.According to individuals that work for Indeed as well as leading talent acquisition experts, the only jobs that anyone should take seriously on Indeed are “sponsored” ones. Even though those may not necessarily be current either, the company gets charged x amount whenever the listing Is accessed which motivates them to contact Indeed to take them off their site. Many companies have expressed frustration over this claiming that they have been billed unfairly (check out Consumer Reviews of Online Businesses and other similar websites for proof).Good luck!

How do you get a job when 85% are not advertised? What are the best means of networking/job hunting for recent college grads?

I have used this method twice when I ran out of friends and family to lean on. It is work to do it this way but I highly recommend it as it gets results and it puts you in control your search.Just a note, with your degree. I suggest starting out with smaller industrial companies and look at customer service jobs as entry level. Customer service is a great way to see the entire flow of a business and if customer service is one step in your career journey, you get to see other positions that might interest you.The No Network, No Problem Job SearchFind 30–40 companies that match your criteriaFind the hiring managers for these companies. LinkedIn or calling the company are great ways to find themWrite an intro letter that states that what position you believe would fit their needs and you will be sending a cover letter and resume in the next week. Use regular mail, not email.5 days later send out a cover letter and resume. Again not email, use regular mail.5 days later, follow up with a phone call. Ask if they received your intro letter and resume and if they have a position open, if they do, ask for an interview. If they don't have a position, thank them and move on to the next company. This method should yield you 6 to 10 interviews and 2 to 3 job offers. If you like this in a PDF, find it here. This method is meant to give you three touch points with the hiring manager and is disruptive in that it doesn't use email and the normal flow of the day for hiring managers to ignore.Good Luck and God’s Blessings!!
