How To Get A Talent Agent

Can you have a talent agent out of state?

I'm an LA Actor giving you the REAL DEAL!

If you're NOT a big star, then you need to be AT MOST 1.5 hours away from LA. Otherwise, you are NOT going to be signed be an LA Agency. They NEED you close. If your flight gets delayed or you can't make and audition, you'll ruin the agent's relationship with casting directors thus giving the agent a good reason to drop you.

To get an agent, you need to get GREAT headshots, a good resume, and training from the best. These are enough to get you a commercial agent at least. Getting a GOOD theatrical agent (Film/tv) takes longer. Most good theatrical agents won't see you unless you're SAG, have a polished resume, and a demo reel. Commercial agents are more lenient about that. What the best Commercial agents want to see on your resume are good commercial classes, improv, and cold reading.

You can get an agent multiple ways. Here are a few common ways:
-Mail in an unsealed manilla envelope with a CONCISE coverletter and headshot with the resume stapled on the back. If you have a demoreel include that too.
-Attend a showcase and impress them.
-Get a referral from a friend who is with the agency that you're interested in

DON'T
-Email them unless they tell you to. IT'S UNPROFESSIONAL!
-Call unless they tell you to. ALSO UNPROFESSIONAL!
-Walk in and ask for a meeting. UNPROFESSIONAL THREE!
-Sign with them if they ask for upfront money, make you take new photos with THEIR photographer, or take THEIR classes. Agent's ONLY make money when you do. Agents usually make 10% on film/tv and commercials and 20% on commercial print.

How to get a talent agent?

I'm 13 also and have been pursuing the whole TV, film, etc. thing for roughly 7 years now and I absolutely love it! Okay so if you're looking for an agent, there are some agent workshops out there that you can audition for, so I would check one of those out. Or if you really want an agent (I think you should try this) look into some acting classes in LA and you can ask your teacher what agency they recommend. (Btw a resume is a list of all the acting projects you have been involved in) But since you're just starting out, I would highly highly highly recommend that you "build your resume" (get jobs) first. How you can do this is by having your parent help you sign up for an online submission website, like Now Casting etc etc you can look it up (they do cost some money though). And if you sign up for a website like that, you can submit yourself to go on auditions that you want to go on (casting directors look at submissions and decide who they want for the auditions) and so that can hopefully lead to some little acting projects so you can get a feel for what it's like. And look into subscribing to BackStageWest (acting newspaper thing I get it) I have to tell you that I have been doing this for seven years straight and I haven't booked anything HUGE- yet. What I'm saying is that it can be a long and hard process so don't freak if it's taking a long time to book something and it's a big commitment. Good luck in your career :) if you have any questions about the acting thing ever, just email me and I'll be happy to give you advice!

How to get a Referral to a talent agent?

How do I get a talent agent or a music manager?

To get a talent agent, you need to find their email address and email them an EPK (Electronic Press Kit). Also do some cold calling by finding their phone numbers, but before you do that, try to learn something about them if you can find any info on them. Or, simply show up in their office and set a meeting with them. This won’t necessarily go over as smooth and easy as I have made it sound. It will take some real foot work, but it can be done. You can also go through a reputable Entertainment Lawyer as well. But that is going to cost a pretty penny. For management, you can simply just look up management companies for artist and go from there. But, you may want to ask somebody close to you that exhibits great management skills, and are consistent in things that they do because following up, and following through is critical for one’s career.

How can I get a talent agent in Los Angeles?

The best way to get an agent or respectable manager is going through word of mouth. Put yourself out there, go to auditions and talk to people. Ask them who reps them, how they like it and ask what experiences they’ve had when searching for a manager/agent. You may not get the perfect answer but you’ll be closer to the truth. Also put yourself in classes. Actors who take classes respect the craft and want to develop. Chances are they have good teachers, good agents and all are connected. Make friends, be genuine about it and put yourself out there. Also think of yourself as a product. Ask yourself: Would you represent you? If not, what could you do differently?

What are the benefits of getting a talent agent?

The answer to your question lies in understanding what a talent agent does; Agents negotiate contracts for their clients. In exchange, clients pay the agent 10% of what they earn through those contracts. (That 10% is set in stone, per agreements with the actors’ unions. Someone else mentioned 15–20% — that’s incorrect. Managers may take that much, but actors should never work with an agent who asks for more than 10%.)The idea that agents find actors work is one of the biggest mistakes actors make early in their careers. It is the actor’s job to find work, through his/her own relationships and networking. Agents may submit you for available roles, but if you haven’t done a lot of marketing and networking on your own, nothing will come of it.Agents only make money when their clients make money, which means they’re looking for actors who are committed to pursuing a career in acting and have put in the time, energy, and money to make that happen. If you have little experience and are not sure if you want to act professionally, an agent doesn’t make sense for you, and you likely wouldn’t be able to get a reputable one anyway, because what you do isn’t what they’re interested in — and that’s ok! It means you can pursue your love of acting in all its forms without worrying about joining the union, finding representation, networking with industry pros… all the non-creative business work pros need to do.

Is there a chance I can get a talent agent with few credits?

You probably could get an agent, but probably not a good agent — and in my experience, a bad agent is worse than no agent at all. Actors with bad agents end up waiting around for months or years complaining about their agents and trying to find new ones instead of building their credits by focusing on casting relationships — which ultimately is what you need to get a good agent. Here’s an exercise. Why do you think you need an agent right now? What would you expect that agent to do? Now imagine you do find an agent and s/he doesn’t deliver on whatever that is — what would you do then? If the answer is look for a new agent (or manager), fast forward to a point at which you realize no representative is going to get you past where you are in your career right now, so you’re going to have to do it yourself. Now what do you do?Do that now, instead of spending time and energy trying to get an agent.
