How To Get Ahead In Work With A Bad Boss

What do you do with a bad boss?

My boss has a personal thing against me. I don't know why but I have complained to my HR supervisor last year. (He accused me of going out drinking a lot and it was affecting my attendance. However, during that time I had the flu and he didn't believe me). btw - I am female in my late 20's and he is male in his late 50's.

This is the second yearly review in a row that he has given me bad remarks. Last year I worked my tail off, came in earlier and stayed later and always made sure I crossed my T's and dotted my I's. I take my career very seriously and I want to do very well and hope to advance to another position soon. But he never compliments anyone on a job well done, ever. All of us employees agree with that. But it seems he has favorites and some he just doesn't like, perhaps their personalities. (Whenever we are in a meeting, he does a lot of backstabbing of other empolyees). Trust me, I have approached him in the past asking for extra work or offering help for any projects. I have asked him numerous times, directly, if what I was doing was pleasing him and I would never get feedback from him. I even tried brownnosing him. But, all in all, it seems he just ignores me and only talks to me whenever there is a problem that he thinks I created. It's like he is on this power trip or something.

What can I do? I can't leave because I need my job and there hardly any jobs in my field available because of this economy. But it is gotten to the point where I dread getting up in the morning and I feel I have no more fight left in me. I look forward to holidays or days off. It feels that I am developing depression from this. What would you do?

My boss told me my register at work was $11 short, is that really bad?

It happens all the time and it's usually from doing something wrong with the register and not handling money wrong. The chances are pretty good that you will be $11 over on another day. Also, do they count the change when they change drawers?

Also be careful of people who say you gave them wrong change. There are some people who say they gave you a $20 when they gave you a $10, but they will come back ten minutes after they bought their stuff. I had one guy do this to me three times before I figured it out. They can tell that you are new. When you take a bill alway say how much it is.

The way they teach people to give change nowadays is wrong. It use to be if someone gave me $20 and it cost $7.85 I would go:

".15 is 8
2 is 10
and 10 is 20"

But now they go "$12.15 change."

BTW I just read one of the other answers and they absolutely cannot take any shortage out of your paycheck. That is illegal in every state.

How to get used to work under a young boss?

This problem may be very old and repeated to some but I am facing it fresh.I am a 34 old year East European immigrant working in US in a company as an Administrative assistant.
My first boss was abusive and tyrant. She scolded me over minor mistakes.Sometimes I do make spelling mistakes as English is not my mother tongue. She was harsh and sometimes became very vocal. However she was 3-4 years older than me and somehow I tolerated her harsh behaviour.
Then I was transfered to another department in the same company about two months ago.My new boss is nice and polite. She never scolds me and simply corrects any spelling mistakes or any other mistake. She encourages me and treats me like her elder brother. However I still feel bad because she is almost ten years younger than me and sometimes I feel impotent working under and reporting to a young girl. This feeling of impotence sometimes persists with me even after office hours.
However I do not want to return to my previous boss also.I do not know what to do?Please give me some advice.

Do you think its bad to sleep with your boss?

Bad move for a variety of reasons. 1 just being that he's not divorced yet. 2, you are with someone. 3, he's your boss, don't compromise the boss/worker status.

And, what happens to you if he goes back to his wife? You're left knowing you cheated on your B/F. Stay with the person you're with, or break up with the guy & move on, but stay away from your boss.

How do I get ahead with a boss who doesn't understand me at all?

We are all products of our choices, not our circumstances. If your boss does not understand you, part of your professional responsibilities are to educate your boss and help him/her understand you. If you choose not to do this, then you are choosing to live in a circumstance where you are guaranteed to be mis-understood.It is also a part of your professional responsibility to plan and execute your own development plan - and you don't have to do this during working hours under the direct supervision of a boss that doesn't understand you.You can always choose to stay inside the box, and take what the circumstances send your way. A more mature choice is to step up and do the hard work of becoming understood and accepting responsibility for your own development.

Why does my boss get mad at me for switching shifts at work?

He understands ! And he's probably tearing his hair out.
When you trade shifts with someone you are supposed to ASK the boss, a few days ahead of time, in writing,if it's alright to trade the shift. Then you wait for them to approve the request-or not, which they don't have to do ,since someone else already went to a lot of work putting a schedule together the way management wants it.
If I was the manager I would not be happy AT ALL about someone who is NOT a manager or staffing coordinator (you) taking it upon yourself to override my decisions about staffing and changing the schedule every day.In the first place you're overstepping into something that's not your job.In the second place managers need to always be able to look at the schedule and know definitely that we have enough people coming in to work the next shift.
Granted, he should have pulled you in and counseled you about it before now, but since he didn't, I am ;)
I understand you didn't mean any harm, but what you're doing creates a lot of stress for the boss, concerning staffing. He may also see a bigger problem with a worker (you) thinking it's perfectly fine to just step in and change the manager's decisions without even saying anything.
If you want to keep your job you need to stop what you're doing and if it's REALLY important to trade a shift ASK the boss a day or two ahead of time.

My coworker said that my boss is very protective of me. What does that mean? More details?

She said that he is very protective of me and more so then any of his other employees. What does that mean? Why?
By the way - is it a good thing or is it a bad thing?
She said this because I wanted to work with a new department and still work with my current department as well. So my boss went ahead and spoke to the managers of the new department to help me find a position there and was even okay with me working part-time in his department. Normally, people would have to find positions on their own but he's kind of using his 'power' to get me that position..
Additional Details
She also said that he hardly keeps a track of what she does but that he is so heavily involved in what I do and stays on top of that. However, she said that she's the one who has to go and meet him to discuss her work and what she's doing.
