How should I get my story published?

So, I'm writing a novel called "Savage Hounds & Pelican Pouch."
It's a story about Vincent, a 25 year old guy from New York who gets addicted to heroin, so he moves to a small Florida town and gets to know his girlfriend Holly (who is 70 years old.) Eventually he'll start getting the urge to kills and he starts murdering dogs, but then he kills his neighbor and drives back to New York because he feels like Florida is so boring it gives him the urge to kill. They eat at Biscuitville where he kills his best friend and steals his car and in Virginia he goes to this church where he gets converted to christianity and feels like Jesus has commanded him to stop killing stuff. But then he arrives in New York and gets addicted to heroin again, so he tries to kill his junk best friends' dog to get back off of the heroin. He gets arrested and spends his life into prison. The end.

Also, if it's well written (I'm trying to create a very dialogue-y novel but also very visual, describing the Florida landscapes/rooms/fauna & flora) what are the chances of getting it published? Obviously, it'll be on an "independent publishing house", as it's not meant for the "mainstream public", but obviously I'd also like people to read it as soon as it's done.

How can I publish my short story in India?

If you have written significant number of short stories, you can go for publshing your short stories as a book. It's the same way you publish a novel.Reach out a publisher (Traditional or Self Publishing). And then you will be asked to submit 3 of your stories as sample stories (Some of the Publishers follow this. It's not a generalisation because I don't know about every publishing firm. Little may differ, but it's almost this way everywhere.) And the if the publishing firm gives you a hand, you may get published. All it takes is that your stories should be genuine and convincing. Quality matters and nothing else.If you are asking about publishing a single short story somewhere under your name, and not a whole collection of short stories, then there is an opportunity right now.As I came across a post on Facebook, a Delhi based publisher, named BLUE ROSE PUBLISHERS are bringing out a book AMORE for which stories are invited. You may go for that if you have a ‘love story’ in your hand. For that, you may  this post-facebook.com/blue.rose.publishers/?refid=17&_ft_=top_level_post_id.1706303092950326%3Atl_objid.1706303092950326%3Athid.1469602393287065%3A306061129499414%3A69%3A0%3A1456819199%3A7470947119238800377&__tn__=CFor any other query, feel free to PM me. :)

What are some tips for writing good short stories to self publish?

5 Key Elements of Successful Short Stories   Short stories possibly make the best places for beginner creators to start their callings.   They're not long and jumbled, the creator gets a chance to solely focus on a plot, a character, and a theme. Short stories in like manner offer writers the opportunity to hone their bent and see their structure come to finish as a touch of fiction—remarkable assurance support!   Raymond Carver, Ernest Hemingway, Alice Munro, and Tobias Wolff are out and out immense names in short describing. What makes these authors such superb short story columnists? They are veritable supervisors at joining the five key parts that go into each remarkable short story: character, setting, battle, plot, and theme.   In case you wish to continue ahead from the freehand, stream of thought short stories that you started with, and advance into creating exacting ones to get conveyed or to check out short story contentions, you'll need a predominant appreciation of the forte. Will self-publishing short stories hurt my chances of getting a novel traditionally published?

It depends.Contrary to what most unpublished authors believe, the worst position to be in is not unpublished, it’s badly published. If you have never published anything, and you submit a fabulous novel to Penguin or S&S, you are the new shiny with the potential to be the Next Big Thing. However, if you have been published before, or have self-published, you have a sales history. If you have a good sales history, that’s great, a publisher will look and decide that your 20,000 previous readers will probably buy your next book, so be more inclined to take a chance. But if your sales history consists of 50 people, most of whom have the same surname as you, that makes you a much worse risk. And short stories are difficult to sell. Even big name authors whose novels sell in the millions have trouble shifting books of short stories. What you might be better doing is using the short stories to generate a fan base, so that when you go looking for your contract with a traditional publisher, you can mention you have a fan base of 10,000 who think want to buy your first novel.

Where Are Some Good Sites For Publishing Short Stories? ?

There are several sites on the internet for this. I would recommend:
http://www.fictionpress.com
http://www.storywrite.com
http://writerscafe.org/.

I would have to say that fictionpress is the best out of the three though.

If you are looking to get published soon you shouldn't post it online, but if you just want to post it for feedback and aren't looking to ever get published then posting it on any of those sites is okay.

What is the best way to go about getting fiction published for a first-time writer?

Depends on a lot of things. Lets break it down, shall we?Short stories.Quickest way: Write a story and post it on your blog. Ta-da published electronically and copyright law says its copyright to you as soon as its published.Best way for reals: Submit to short story markets, anthologies or magazines, that are low paying. I songle these out because they have lower competition and rejection rates, but still get you published. For and even better chance, submit to a place that loves a local connection. There are markets just for Midwest writers, for trans writers, for those all from an alma mater. You'll find them.Novels.Quick way: Self-publish. Except it takes a lot of effort to get noticed, many people loose money cuz they pay for cover designs and edits, and you probably have no idea how to market it.Best ways for reals: For the traditional route, skip the agent and approach small presses directly. Some, like short story markets, are looking for really particular things. Many only publish ebooks, but you do get an editor and cover artist and a tiny bit of help in marketing it. Again, don't expect big sales, but small presses get back to you sooner, have less competition, and are more inclinded to work with authors than the five publishing houses.

My completed novel is 58,000 words. Is this too short to be published?

Is 58,000 the word count your word processor gave you or your estimated word count?

The estimated count is what publishers rely on, and it will usually be higher than the number your word processor gives you.

There are a couple ways to do it, but this is the easiest: Use a 12pt Courier font, double spaced, with 1" margins all around. With that, you can estimate 250 words per page. Multiply the total number of pages by 250, estimating for partial pages.

I doubt your word count will hold you back. You'll just need to find a publisher who will accept within that range. I think 60,000+ is the standard for mainstream fiction.

*Edit: The word count you should include with your queries is the estimated word count. Publishers aren't interested in how many words there actually are, they're interested in how much space those words are going to take up--the estimated count gives them that information.
