How To Install Plex On

How do you install Plex on Apple TV?

You can't directly install Plex on the 3rd Generation Apple TV, but there are workarounds so that you can stream Plex Media Server (PMS) content to an Apple TV.  It involves a few steps, and running a Python script called "PlexConnect" on the same computer that hosts your PMS.   In essence, you configure your Apple TV to route all requests through your PMS, and PlexConnect will hijack quests for the "Trailers" app and serve Plex content instead.  Once it's configured, you start your Apple TV and open the "Trailers" app, and instead of showing the Trailers app it will show all of your Plex content.   PlexConnect I've been doing this for quite some time and it works great. Rumors right now are that Apple will be opening up a developer SDK for the Apple TV this fall with the release of the next gen Apple TV.  If that happens, I'm sure Plex will create an app for it, just as they have on other Apple devices and other streaming boxes (such as Roku).

Can my external hard drive be my server for plex?

As far as I understand, Plex can be used in several ways.It can be used as a media server (multimedia) program on a computer in which the external drive would be storage for your files. In this case you could say that its a file server, although "server" wouldnt be the proper term. If you are thinking this way, your network would have to be up to the task of getting the files off of the external drive and then your computer would act as the actual "server" on your network sending files to the devices that you want them to.Some routers allow you to connect your external drive to it and plex running on various devices would access the files on your external drive through your router serving them up to the various devices you want to view multimedia on.Your external drive can also be used in conjunction with various smart tv's running plex, connect your external drive to your tv. Is that what you mean?If you want plex to be installed on your external drive and then without any other connection be used as a server, no. Its not a server. There are now external drives with wifi that would give the illusion that its a server because plex running on a device would access the external wirelessly serving up your multimedia enjoyment. So plex must be installed somewhere in the chain in order for it to work. Whether its Roku, Samsung, PC or the others. Installing plex on your external would only allow you to use plex when its connected to your pc - as an external drive. Just in case you consider doing this, I think that it would be more efficient to install plex on your pc and use the external as media storage. Although it would work.

What do I do to file charges against my landlord for tampering with my mail?

Since there is only one mailbox, where her mail and your mail is delivered, the PO would not consider this to be tampering. She is simply collecting the mail delivered to her address. To be tampering, she would need to be destroying, opening, or otherwise doing something to the mail. It could be theft of mail, but it would have to be proven that she is keeping or disposing of your mail. Simply not giving it to you for a couple days would not meet that standard.

If she is keeping some of your mail, you would report that to the US Postal Inspectors. They investigate crimes that involve the US Postal Service, including theft of mail or mail fraud. Your postmaster could help you get in touch with the Inspection Service, or their number might be in the phone book if you are in an urban area.

If I were you, I'd ask her to install separate mailboxes for each address. If she does not do so, ask if you could pay for the extra mailbox and for the labor to have it installed.

Personally, if I were you, I'd just go to the post office to rent a PO box. You would get your mail sooner, and the cost for a small box is probably only $40-60 per year. Make sure you file a change of address form when you rent the PO Box so that all your mail will go to the PO Box.

What is the cheapest and easiest way to set up a Plex Media Server?

The question doesn't say if you want a dedicated server or not. This is for a dedicated server:1) Find an old computer. I was fresh out for my plex build, so I had to buy one off ebay. I picked up an Optiplex SFF C2Q 3Ghz with 4GB RAM and a 160GB HD for $80. A little overkill for Plex, but the price, size, and noise (near silent) were right.2) Install some friendly Linux distro. Plex runs well on pretty much all the major distros: Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, CentOS, Mint, etc.  Chose a version that is "LTS".  My personal preference is Mint with Cinnamon or Mate, but they're all pretty much equal for setting up a stand-alone plex box. 3) Download and install Plex.4) Create your media library directories. This is the trickiest part about setting up a Plex server IMO. If your directories are named right, Plex will populate your library like magic. If they aren't named right, nothing will happen and no error messages show up.5) Log in to your Plex server and tell it where to find your media libraries. I'll silently work for some time and then....Presto...your Plex server is all ready to go!

What is the best way to connect a plex server to my non-smart TV?

…and to round off the ways you can connect your TV, either or a Roku or Apple TV make very good Plex clients, and in the case of either, you get all of the other apps they run. It’s probably not as cheap as the Raspberry Pi or just connecting to a Laptop with HDMI Cable (or even Chromecast), but it’s easy, powerful, and I absolutely love the Apple TV client, which has proven to be one of the most stable pieces of software (and it works with all of my other Apple software like iTunes, iPhoto and iMovie). My brother says his Roku sees Plex just like a Netflix service (or something similar), and that’s from a neighboring country!

How do I set up a NAS to work via Plex on an Xbox and Roku with a MacBook?

First, mount the NAS on the MacBook running the Plex Server.  (In finder, IIRC "Connect to Server" or "Go to Server")Next, create a directory on the NAS for your Plex library, then copy your movies to it (be sure to use file names and directory structures compatible with Plex. Plex is very picky about filenames and directories)Last, log in to your Plex Server from either Plex.tv or  http://localhost:32400/web/, go to the settings, then libraries, and add a library and set the location the directory on your NAS.  Plex will think for a while then populate your server with the videos (as long as your file and directory names are correct)Once you have the server set up and running on your MacBook, and it added to an account on Plex.tv, you can install the Roku client and it will find your MacBook Plex server.

100ft HMDI or Apple TV to stream video on PC?

At 100 ft it will be very questionable if HDMI will work, particularly at 1080p. While modern electronics have equalizer circuits designed to help compensate for signal loss (and therefore allow longer cables to work), this is usually limited to about 60 ft or so.

The articles at the first 2 links are very informative re issues around long HDMI cables.

Bottom line, a good HDMI cable may work with 8 bit 1080p video (what is currently the norm) at 100ft, but probably not. (For example, I have a 45 ft Monoprice 22 awg HDMI cable connected through two amps and another 10 ft of shorter cables (arguably equivalent to > 60 ft connection) and while it works fine with 720p/1080i it fails with 1080p). For reliable connections at 100ft length consider using Cat 6 / baluns or an active equalizer (3rd Link). The cheapest approach is to try a good 100 ft cable and plan to add an active equalizer if it doesn't work. See the 2nd link for advice on brands.

Can Plex stream a 1080p video file to Apple TV 3 without re-compressing it?

I don't see why not. You can install Plex Client for the Apple TV and Plex Media Server will stream for you. You can override the defaults that automatically choose the best playback mode for you, and set it to direct stream the video file.Sometimes my files are played like that , and they look perfect. Other times, their transcoded on the fly, where they also look perfect... Plex is awesome! I haven't written down every-time this direct streaming occurs and what type of file it was streaming but I'll tell you that my viewers are extremely particular about their video quality and wouldn't allow me to exist if these type of issue continued to persist an reduce the overall video enjoyment experience Plex provides. Hope this is helpful. Also make sure you're running a capable system like a FreeNAS Mini from iXsystems
