most of u know im a girl..i got new makeup..does it make me look more girly

i wear boys, or gender neutral clothes..so if u saw me would u be able to tell?

Is there a correct way to address someone who look very androgynous?

I went to a fast food restaurant the other day and I witnessed a scene where the attendant was unsure about how to address a very androgynous looking (and sounding) customer. I absolutely couldn't tell his/her gender either. The poor chap had to loudly call out the customer in question because he/she forgot his/her change. He yelled "Excuse me...sir...I mean ma'am...I mean, sir...!!"

It was very awkward indeed.

What is the proper etiquette in situations like these? How do you politely address someone whose gender you're unsure of? Asking them directly about their gender might be a little bit too offensive for some people, especially those who are not transgendered or who do not purposely try to look androgynous.

Also, I guess you can omit the 'sir' or 'ma'am' completely and just stop at 'excuse me', but I think that's not a good option because it alienates the androgynous customer. Every other customer get to be addressed properly, why shouldn't he/she?

Thanks!

As a guy, do you like girls with an androgynous look/style?

For me it depends. Yes to a certain extent. Boyish clothes on a girl is ok, it's when they go the extra mile to look like a boy that it becomes a turn off. The biggest way they do this is through their hair, but anything that manipulates their physical/ facial appearance to make themselves seem like guy is what sets the line for me. I think there is a difference between aiming for a certain style and aiming to look like you belong to a certain gender.I think Ellen Page pulls off the style really well, she's not afraid of looking like a girl with a boyish style. That's what being “Androgynous” is all about. When a girl shoots to look only like a guy like most of the pictures shared by commenters, that's not Androgynous, that would land under masculine. These are women aiming to look masculine. But most people don't get that.Androgynous:“partly male and partly female in appearance”On the BEM Sex-role Inventory, to get Androgynous one must score above the median for both masculine and feminine categories. Meaning the results showed as having strong traits for both. That is why I think Ellen Page pulls it off really well, because she has the boyish look but still has a girlish look as well:She is perfectly ok with looking like this:But also like this:
