How To Make Kefir Yogurt

Do I have Kefir or yogurt?

I have a bottle that contains kefir that I bought at a russian store - it's a thick clumpy milk that is sour to taste. To make more I simply leave some of the clumpy milk on the bottom, add some milk overtop and shake well. In 12 hours or so, I have more of it ready. I was reading about "real kefir" and it talked about kefir grains, which I have no idea about. This made me question whether it was really kefir that I have. Can someone help me here. Thanks.

What is the difference between yogurt and kefir?

Since yogurt and kefir are both cultured dairy products so people sometimes assume that there aren’t many differences between them. This is not true, the two of them have various differences between them:Kefir has thinner consistency than Yogurt and is typically sold as a beverage. You could drink it, pour it over your cereal. Essentially, kefir can be used to substitute yogurt in many dishes. Both Yogurt and Kefir are sources of probiotics (like bacteria or yeast) but kefir contains almost 3 times as many probiotics as yogurt. A higher probiotic count per serving means bigger potential benefits to your digestive health and immune system.Kefir’s active yeast and bacteria provide more nutritive value than yogurt by helping digest the foods that you eat and by keeping the colon environment clean and healthy.Kefir is easier to digest than yogurt which makes it an excellent nutritious food for children and the elderly. All in all both of them are a great source of probiotics and provide many health benefits.

Which is better for you, yogurt or kefir?

I've read that kefir is better because it colonizes in your intestine, whereas yogurt does not. Buy organic goat milk kefir. It had the least amount of sugar. If u don't like the taste then organic plain cow milk kefir. Keep an eye on the sugar content though. Some kefirs are like eating a snickers bar!  To make my plain kefir  taste good I blend it with organic fruit in a blender with ice. Banana, pineapple, and carrot is really good!  Add coconut Kevita for extra taste and health benefits (probiotics).

Can I give yogurt or Kefir to my children who have the roto virus?

Some dairy products can make G.I. upset worse, but yogurt and other live cultured dairy (i.e. Kefir) can often help with diarrhea. It may especially be beneficial if your children are taking antibiotics for the virus, it'll help keep that natural gut flora active and fighting! My doctor has always suggested yogurt while on antibiotics, and while going through a stomach virus.

Another diet for stomach upset/diarrhea for kids (and adults as well!) that's being researched is the CRAM diet (cereal, rice, applesauce, and milk). L reuteri. L. acidophilus and L casei are active cultures in yogurt that are known to help combat diarrhea from many different sources. Finally, to the very intelligent nurse who may not understand rotavirus as much as I do, yogurt IS a food source that is widely known to help treat acute rotavirus.

Is Kefir better than yoghurt. If so, why?

Kefir, much like yogurt, is a healthful dairy product made from cultured milk. They are both good sources of protein and high in calcium, potassium and B-vitamins, while each offers a unique blend of beneficial gut bacteria. But is one healthier or better than the other? It’s hard to say. I don’t think it’s as much about yogurt versus kefir as it is about using both of them to optimize health. The main differences between kefir and yogurt are the types and amounts of bacteria found within. Kefir offers a much more diverse array of cultures compared to yogurt, and they offer different benefits. Whereas the bacterial cultures found in yogurt are relatively small and “transient,” kefir can have two to three times the amount of cultures, while milk kefir can have up to 20 different types of probiotics. Comparatively, yogurts only really offer a handful of probiotics. Here's one infographic which illustrates the perfect differentiation:Sources for the information:1. Kefir vs Yogurt2. Kefir Wikipedia

How do I make Kefir from Kefir?

As Claudia states, you might be able to get some small grains from home made kefir. You can, however, make kefir from kefir (including store bought), without grains. To do this, add kefir (a few percent) to fresh milk and culture it at room temperature for half a day. Making kefir this way is sometimes called the “Russian method”. You should only produce one generation this way: the more generations between the kefir grains and the final product, the higher the risk of contamination. The Russian method is useful for rapidly scaling up kefir production.

Where can I buy Kefir?

DO you have a grocery store near you that sells Eastern European foods? (Russian, Ukrainian, etc) they often sell kefir.

You can buy the kefir grains online, and make your own, too.

Vaginal douching with yogurt & kefir. 10 points?

I have a friend who saw her lady doctor today. She was concerned because she gets yeast infection frequently. She recommended unpasteurized organic yogurt. I don't know what happened to a spoon full of sugar but apparently a spoon full of yogurt does wonders. I would make sure you can do this at a time you can lay down and relax it can get messy. I don't know about the kefir but here is a link I found to answer that part of your question.
