How To Make Move To New York City

Should I move to New York?

Living in NYC is much different than living in the rest of the US. Compared to rest of the country, NY has good public transportation. It is much less homogenous. The average New Yorker tends to be liberal, and better dressed than the rest of the country. However. It's crowded. It's dirty, and New Yorkers tend to think NYC is great. They like NYC for everything shitty about NYC. The phrase "If you can make it here, you can make it anywhere" is perfect. What it really means is living in NYC is so difficult that if you can be successful here, you can be successful anywhere. New Yorkers love that sentiment "yeah, my city is so shitty that it tests your mettle". New Yorkers are like Mumbaikers in that respect (actually I think most large metroes have the same "affliction"). If you live there, you will think it's the greatest city in the world. You will love it not despite it's bad features, but because of it's bad features. I suggest that you go where the jobs are. Every place has it;s pros and cons. Don't constrain yourself to NY. Most people end up loving the place they live at. The West coast has silicon valley. Austin has a burgeoning IT industry. DC has a well established IT industry, and I see a lot of startups coming up. Technically speaking, the biggest differrence between The East coast and the West coast is (Tupac and biggie.. no sorry), east coaster techies tend to be more domain oriented, whereas West coast techies tend to be more technology oriented. East coast has a lot of well established pre-internet companies. And a lot of work here tends to be building something that these companies can use. Whereas, the West coast is where all the "innovation" started. So, West coast tends to prize tech hacking skills as lot more than the East Coast. People who move to the East Coast from the West Coast all remark how "boring" the developers here are. "Everyone is doing the same thing! Building a CRUD application. How many times will you do the same thing?"

How much money should I save to move to New York City from Europe?

It depends how long you plan to stay without a source of income. You can assume that for rent (if you are frugal and willing to live outside the most desirable parts of Manhattan) you can spend ~800-1,000 a month. You can then assume $150-200+ a week for food, $110 a month for a metro card, and then a few hundred more for incidentals. I would guess you should assume about $2000 per month at a minimum, assuming you have no income. Hope that helps, and good luck!

What are some tips for moving to New York City?

Try to find a job here before moving here. Makes everything much easier and less stressful knowing you have a paycheck coming in.Try to visit first at least once and not focus on doing touristy things (visiting tourist attractions)Check out different neighborhoods in the city to see which areas you like and would want to live inFind out what the closest subway stops are to your work (if you found a job here already), so that when looking for an apartment you know what subway lines to look out forDon't live near/in Times SquareCheck out craigslist to look at apartment prices in different neighborhoods to see what types of apartments you can find in your price rangeOnly use a broker if you really need to and don't have a lot of time to search for an apartment yourself, they usually charge at least 1 month's rentRent prices are the highest for moving into a new apartment in the summer, so if you can, move in the fall or winterLive somewhat near a subway stopBe aware of the cost of living adjustment - things definitely are more expensive hereKnow that you probably will spend more eating out and going out for drinks because restaurants and bars are everywhere and it's so easy to go outSome people may disagree, but i preferred to move everything from my old apartment in LA to NYC (i used a moving service that loaded up a truck with everything from my old apartment, it was around $2k). I thought that was much easier, considering I liked all my furniture and would've had to pack a few suitcases of clothes, computers, and other things anyway if i didn't use a moving service. You could buy all new stuff after moving here, but that takes time too to find everything, and then most likely not having a car in the city it's a hassle if you have to rent a car or ask a friend, or try and get everything delivered.

Should I move to New York City or Los Angeles?

My company has helped thousands of people to move around the country and abroad. When you are considering two cities, like New York City or LA, the best option would depend on the individual himself. But I can put my two cents in.You’ll need to really ask yourself what you want in a new city. New York and LA are both expensive places to live in although NYC is definitely the more expensive one. The biggest difference would be weather (you don’t experience the cold New York winters in LA), transportation (LA doesn’t have NYC’s convenient transport system). Otherwise, both cities offer unique advantages that appeal to different sets of lifestyles and personalities. You’ll need to be prepared to thrive in a hectic, crowded, and dog eat dog environment in New York City. LA has a slightly more laid back environment. To help you decide, you could prioritize where you stand a better chance of making a good living.

I want to move to new york.?

I am 23 years old and living in my parents house for the time being. It's going good and I do have a steady job as a graphic designer making decent pay, but everyday it's the same routine, wake up work from 9-5, and then go home and go to bed. It's getting way too monotonous on top of not having much independence because my parents are always nosing around asking me where I am going and what I am doing every minute of every day. It's starting to get to the point where I just want to break free and make a drastic move. I really want to move to new york, because right now I am living in the middle of nowhere in Illinois and there just isn't much to do, and I feel living in a big city like ny, you get to meet more open-minded people and there are just endless things to see and do. I might be planning to move next year, once I save enough, I have about $10,000+ saved currently.

So my question is: How do I get started on moving to new york? Where is the best and affordable places to live? I want to live in a borough of new york that is safe, affordable, and is not so far from the main city. Do I have enough saved so that I can get myself an apartment and survive on that, until I find a decent job? A lot of people say that you should secure yourself a job before you move to another city or even State, but that would be kind of hard wouldn't it because the company would ask you to go for an interview, but I don't want to buy myself a plane ticket to travel for just an interview that I might know if I will get the job or not. I just really need to get some good advice on how I would go about moving to new york.

Thanks for putting up with my ranting.

I want to move to New York City after college?

I don't know where to start though.

I am only 17, but I graduate high school this year, and will be going to college for about 3 years to be an MRI technician. I want to move to NYC after college, but I don't know how I should.

Like, how do I get a job there? Do I move there and then start applying for jobs, or do it from where I live which is Oklahoma. And how to I go about getting an apartment. I also want a roommate.

Moving to New York City. Any Advice!?

Whoa.. Tiger!
Do you know how many 5 foot 7 Georgeous, beautiful, and absolutely stunning fashion and commercial models live in Manhattan. Over 2 million! Now Im just exaggerating. but my point is you need 2 slow down and realize you are in for a world of some serious competition.

Its one thing to be a pretty girl from PA, but you are talking about NYC. The center and capital of the Universe. I wouldnt move to NYC with atleast 10,000 cash. You are going to need it.. Why suffer and live in an apartment with 7 other people, so not worth it. Get your cash right.. and it will be easier for you to make the jump..

First things first. You need Cash, and you need to Survive. That said, either Learn to Bartend, Wait Tables or Cut Hair, why??because the cash is Amazing. and in NYC, cash is king. You can make a lot of money, and meet many girls just like you that want a shot in the business. But you can do that in the real world to get by!

Second- You can meet people your age through www.craigslist and any new joband look for a roomshare till you get on your feet or find a roomate.

Third- Understand, you probably will FAIl. Most successfull Fail all the time. Look at Donald Trump, He lost over a billion dollars Twice!
So you cant go into NYC, and say I want to go be successful and not fail and not go back crying to ur parents. Most likely that may happen, but its gonna happen in stages.

NYC is one of the greatest cities on the planet, but also very competitive. You need to start out with very low expectations, make friends that got your back, and go step by step.

Understand, looks will only get you so far, and If you dont become the next Heidi Klum, you should have a backup plan.

Either way, I travel a lot from Nyc, atlanta and Miami. I do know some people in the business as I used to be a fashion hairstylist.

Email me some pics and your story at mmdnyc@yahoo.com and Ill pass them along to a few folks I know in NYC.

Moving to New York City with no money?

I want to move to NY in the next year or so but the problem is I don't have much money. I am from a small town in Puerto Rico where there are no jobs at all. I have talked to my parents about this but they don't support me at all saying that I will starve to death but I am just asking for a little money to get me going until I fing a job or two. I know that living in NY is not easy at all and even worse in my situation. Are there any housing opportunities for someone like me? I also plan on going to a community college to study psychology even though I dont know which one yet, I first want to get settled in. Any suggestions or tips would be appreciated, thank you.
