How To Set My Computer To Always Stay On

How do i get my computer to stay on all night?

RaGS sez : That's easy! Do like I do! Just stay up with it 24/7/365 and keep it busy like with Yahoo Answers. You could wind up with a lot of points which are better than money, if you ask me! And good luck to you!

How do i make my computer stay on and not go to the log off screen?

Right click on your desktop. Click properties. Go to screensaver. There should be a box that says 'On resume, display Welcome screen'. Un-check it and click O.K at the bottom of the box.

The clock on my computer is always an hour behind. I reset it, but it will not stay correct. What can I do.?

Your “time zone” settings sound like they are set to the wrong one. If your computer is set to a certain time zone….and you manually reset it to some other current time,…it will automatically go back to its “set at” time zone.

Is it bad if I always put my computer on sleep mode?

It's *really* bad, if you're trying to use it to get some work done.If it's a laptop, leaving it plugged in for long periods of time is known to have bad effects on some batteries (wearing them out much sooner than if the battery is allowed to charge and discharge regularly).  And if it's a laptop and you don't leave it plugged in, then sleep mode will eventually discharge the battery, either forcing hibernation or a hard shutdown.  For reference, this is not the preferred way to shut a computer down.

Can I host my own website with my own computer? How would I go about doing that?

Yes, you can host a website on your computer. But there are a few important things I should point out:Linux is not the only OS you can use to host a website (although it is the most popular). Any computer (Windows, Mac, or Linux) can host a website. All you need is code compatible with that operating system, and to expose the port your website is onYou'll need an always-on computer. This means your laptop (and probably desktop) won't be good enough. You can find an old, cheap computer, put it in the closet, and keep it on at all times to host your siteFor users outside of your network to reach it, you need to forward port 80 on your router to the web server. This usually isn't recommended for home networks, so make sure you know what you're doingThis may violate your ISP's terms of service. If you start to get notable traffic to the site, your ISP may drop you or take legal action. Non-business internet service almost always disallows thisYou'll need to use a dynamic IP service. The IP address assigned to your home changes periodically, which is done by the ISP to protect you (for the most part). Dynamic IP addressing is less of a security risk (harder to track you, harder to attack a user, etc). To assign a URL to your IP, there are services out there that track your IP and dynamically update DNS, like DynDNSYou'll get attacked constantly. Now, these "attacks" aren't usually very difficult to defend against since they're just scripts looking for weak servers. If you enable SSH on port 22 you'll see hundreds of attempts to log in from servers in China. So make sure you have a basic understanding of firewalls and security. It sounds like you really don't want to spend the money to host a site, but you'll take far more time setting up the server, networking, dynamic DNS, etc. Or you could just pay a couple dollars a month for someone else to do that for you.I used to host a few servers at home, and it was a great learning experience, but not worth the time. AWS, Bluehost, etc are worth the money.Hope this helps!

How can I adjust the length of time my computer screen stays active before switching over to screensaver mode?

In Windows 8.1 right click the "Window" when in "desktop" mode. Then left click on "Search" and type in "screen saver". This will take you to the screen saver "window" where you can set which files will be used. Back in the time when cathode ray monitors were used, you could "burn in" a display by leaving the same picture on for too long. With modern LCD monitors this is no longer a problem and screen savers are used just for "entertainment" today. It is my personal opinion that instead of making computers "easier" to use, we are making things more difficult instead! For example, Windows 8.1 is "different" than Windows 8. Which in turn is different than Windows 7. I skipped "Vista", but Windows XP is different from the previous versions of Windows 9.x that preceded it. Then Chromebooks are "different" yet, although the OS is simpler to learn. (so far, as Google will likely "upgrade" it with time)

Why does my computer keep freezing up?

If your computer is freezing it is because you have errors in the Windows registry. Errors in the registry are the main cause of computer freezing and crashing. And unfortunately this is not something you can fix manually. You must use specialized software to do it for you.

If a computer stays on sleep mode for a very long time (like 15-20 hours) is it harmful for it?

If this question was 10 years before I would answer YES! DON'T even use sleep mode. But since the new computer software and hardware architecture is getting more and more improved there is no problem with this.I had tried in older laptops to test the sleep mode since customers complaint that they had issues. The operating system was windows XP and the hardware much lower than today. The result was to stuck and never start again - restart needed - or start after a long time. But nowadays I can say that sleep mode is a safe method toSo in my opinion sleep mode is safe.

How can I prevent my computer from going into sleep mode?

For Your Personal Systems (If you have the required permissions in windows) :Go to Control Panel -> Hardware and Sound -> Power Options. You will find the option “Change when the computer sleeps”.For Office/School Systems (When you don’t have the required permissions and the settings are blocked) :You will need: Any Office Software: MS Office, Libre Office etc.Create a blank presentation in your Office Presentation tool (PowerPoint in case of MS Office).Create a new slide and keep it empty.Open Slideshow (Shortcut: F5). The slideshow of the presentation will now start.Minimize the Slideshow and the Presentation. There you go!Now until the Slideshow is running in the background, your computer will not go to sleep and will also prevent the screen from turning off.Man needs his difficulties because they are necessary to enjoy success.- APJ Abdul Kalam
