How To Stop Hamster From Biting

How do I make my hamster STOP biting me! ?

I agree with the previous answer, try wearing some gloves.

And I don't know if this will work with your hamster, but it definitely worked on mine - place some hamster treats in your hand and offer it to him. Try to let him get used to your smell. And be sure your hands don't smell edible, or he'll surely bite it. Wash your hands regularly.

Or you could also try letting him out of his cage once in a while. Let him run around a closed space (keep an eye on him of course!), maybe he's just bored in his cage.

How do you get a dwarf hamster to stop biting you?

1] Stop a hamster from biting by washing your hands thoroughly before you handle it. Hamsters have relatively poor eyesight, and if you handle a hamster immediately after eating, your pet may confuse your finger with a tasty treat.

2] Avoid handling or picking up your pet hamster while it is sleeping. Remember that hamsters are nocturnal animals, and they will instinctively try to bite you if you disturb them during the day when they are trying to sleep. Try setting a little food in your pet hamster's cage first to see if that arouses its interest, and then pet it gently on its back before lifting it out of the cage.

3] Use a thick pair of gloves to protect yourself while you handle a hamster that is biting you frequently. By allowing the hamster to bite repeatedly without consequence, it will begin to calm down and stop biting as it gets used to being handled. Eventually, the biting behavior while cease once the hamster starts to trust you.

4] Continue to pet and stroke your hamster on its back even as it is biting you. Some hamsters are simply more nervous than others, and it may take a bit of patience on your part to reinforce the bond between you and your pet.

5] Call your pet hamster by its name before you handle it in order to stop the biting behavior. Hamsters can be trained to respond to their names, and if you call out your pet's name before picking it up, it won't be as surprised or annoyed when you put your hand into the cage.

6]Handle your hamster gently at all times. A hamster might bite if it feels it is in danger, especially if you squeeze it or pick it up too quickly. Hamsters are used to being close to the ground and might act alarmed if you're constantly walking around with it in your hands or on your shoulder.

How to stop robo dwarf hamster biting?

The hamster that bites might be scared of you. My hamsters bite just to see if I flinch or not. Don't withdraw your hand quickly. If the hamster bites you once, stop moving and see if it will still bite or nibble. If it bites, then slowly withdraw your hand, and if it nibbles, see if it stops.

Try not to corner them when you pick them up. Let them come on your hand itself with the help of treats or something like that. Peanut butter, small bits of cheese and sunflower seeds are good, but don't overfeed as these are just treats. To stop your friendlier hamster from eating everything, move it away first for some happy time out place somewhere.

I have a hamster which is quite tame now but is still reluctant to get on my hand sometimes. When I had to clean the cage the hamster wouldn't get out even after half an hour of wheedling with toys, treats and even the smell of its sworn enemy (the other hamster). I eventually cornered it and scooped it up, and then it bit me!!! I yelped (quietly) and the hamster hopped off, leaving a spot of blood on my hand. Ouch. I finally poured a heap of hamster food on my hand and picked up the hamster when it just reached the food... haha (no food for the hamster then)

Maybe the hamster isn't accustomed to your smell or it freaks out when it sees a huge shadow cover it (ahh!!! eagle!!!). Some websites suggest you playing with your hamster in the bathtub. Line the bathtub with a towel and just let your hamster run around and over you for it to be accustomed to your smell. To stop a huge shadow from freaking out your hamster, try not to turn on so many lights. That's the easiest thing to do. :D

How can I stop my hamster from biting through the plastic cage?

A Metal cage. Or glassI had a few hamsters growing up who never did this, then a few years ago we got a young hamster for our children, though I was the one looking after it. She knawed through the plastic base on her rather large cage to the point of it having a whole corner missing. She escaped and went walkabout round the house for a few days then back into a repaired cage which she escaped from again. We got a new cage from a friend which was much smaller and fancier but still plastic. Which she eventually knawed through as well.I have to point out that all this time she had plenty of space, food, exercise and alternative things to bite and knaw through but you just couldn’t stop her going back to the edge of her cage. Exercise in her ball seemed to curb it again but not by much.A cage that has no ‘lip’ round the bottom edge is a better idea as they have no way of getting purchase on it to bite.As she got older she did it less I wonder if it was a boredom thing it a tick, she was especially energetic. The other difference was that my other hamsters were all male.Hope some of these suggestions help.
