How do i get my cat to stop pooping and peeing oustside the litter box?

Some cat experts say you need a box for each cat (3) and one extra. Some cats just will not share a litter box. Try getting another box and start by putting it near where he pees now. If he uses it, slowly (over several days) move it to where you want him to pee. If you have covered boxes, try an open one. I know it is nasty, but it beats a ruined rug or floor. A different type of litter may help too.

Cat pooping outside the litter box??

this is usually related to the type of litter in the tray , or an association of pain or unpleastness with using the litter tray. often, the paper around the tray will be scratched up in an attempt to dig and cover.

-make sure that no other cat has been using the box - cats hate sharing.
-make sure it is clean and fresh.

if there is no apparent problem, have the cat checked by the vet. this could be a bladder/bowel problem, causing pain for your cat to get into the box. an old cat may have arthritis, making it uncormfortable to climb and balance in the box.

if the cat is healthy, change the type of litter. offer different types in different boxes, and see which one, if any, it uses.
another reason - it may have been chased by another cat when digging in the box, and so is afraid to climb into the area. if you cannot solve the problem, consult an animal behavourist.

My cat keeps peeing and pooping outside of her litter box, right next to it, and covers it in litter. What do I do?

If your cat is eliminating outside of their litterbox, the absolute first thing you need to do is take them to the vet and have them perform tests. So,Take your cat to the vetIf you have one cat, you need at least two litterboxes. If you have two cats, three litterboxes; three cats, four litterboxes; etc.You need at least one litterbox per floor of your home.Do not place litterboxes near appliances that make noise and/or emit heat. For example, washing machines, dryers, fridges, heaters, etc.Do not place litterboxes in dark and/or cramped areas, and needs to be in well ventilated areas with at least two points of escape. So no closets, no cabinets, no dark garages. Try to avoid covered litterboxes. The size of the litterbox needs to be no less than one and a half (1.5) times the length of the cat. So, for example, if your cat is 12 inches long, the litterbox needs to be no less than 18 inches long.Make sure that the depth of the litter within the box is no more than two inches deep, but no less than 1-1.5 inches deep.Try changing to a different kind/brand of litter. Cats can be very picky about the texture of their litter, and sometimes certain textures may even be painful on their paws (especially if the cat is older or declawed). A good idea could be to purchase sample/travel-sized bags of different kinds of litters and try them out each in different litterboxes--the one your cat tends to use the most could be the litter that s/he prefers.Try to clean the cat's litterbox no less than once a day. Do you want to use a nasty, dirty bathroom? Well, neither does your cat. Try to clean it daily. Use that time to check their waste to make sure there is no foreign objects, blood, or parasites in it.Make sure that they have plenty of safe spots for your cat that children, dogs, etc. cannot bother them (including their litterboxes). A distressed, stressed, or threatened cat is likely to eliminate outside their boxes so as to mark their spotsCheck out these videos:

What can I do to stop 1 of my 2 cats from pooping outside the litter box?

Shock it, leave it in a transporter. Feed it there and do not let out till it pees. They do not like it, they actually pretty much dislike it and meow and demand out but they clean themselves up OK with lots of grimaces and sorry faces and pauses to taste the smell. When it poops he will try scratching to cover it up but fail. Then they go like funny, sitting up very straight ignoring the situation... This delivers the message. Do not let it go messy, it is OK if it ends up wet in piss but not smeared in excrement. Feed it something dry and water. Oh, and leave the transporter where it can see the litter being used by the other cat! This solved the problem with Bony, for a while, but she definitely _wanted_ the sink. When it was obvious she was going nervous because she wanted to go to the litter I would let her out and she would go, politely, to use the litter... As if she did not know, eh? Meanwhile, Felida, (the daughter), would indiscriminately and abundantly go to the litter several times... then even ask inside the transporter, which I of course firmly denied. There was no final solution to Bony. She would go to the sink whenever she found the bathroom door open or I was not alert. Discovering her meant a screaming chase under the bed... and she would use the litter later. Most of the time they would live in the room with the door closed, (because of Priscilla hunting Bony), and she would use the litter without hesitation! So it may be mental indeed, a mania, and you playing her according to her rules, not yours.

My cat started pooping outside the litter box, why?

My cat has been using his box just fine for months. It is an automatically cleaning one so the cleanliness is not an issue. We recently got another cat who uses its own litter box but the older cat started pooping on the rug outside the box. He will pee in the box and then hop out and poop on the rug instead. If you take the rug out he just won't poop at all. Any help?

Edit: The new cat has its own box!!! Please stop with the one box per cat rule, we already have that. And he has been using the automatic cleaning box the entire time we have had him so he is not scared of it.
