How To Teach English As A Second Language From The Start

How do I start the path into teaching English as a second language?

Usually teaching a language starts with a good assessment test that you can either design yourself or get from online or a language text book. This will show you the level that the student is at and that is the level you have to stay on. You can go a level lower and integrate a level higher but never teach a level higher completely; this will confuse a student. That probably what happened. You can't simply teach everything you know; you need to teach what a student on a specific level can understand and the only way for you to do this is to assess this student or a group of students before planning your lesson and/or year or even a course. For this, you need a good text book that will organize you and a student. What seems to be simple to you, might be a "rocket science" to someone who doesn't know the basics. Just remember that and you'll be fine :-) You'll see it on your own with experience.

When to teach baby second language?

The earlier you start the better. It is an interesting coincidence that your husband chose the age 6/7 because that is a turning point in brain development... What I mean is if a child learns a language before they reach 6 or 7 they will be able to speak it without an accent, after that your daughter will probably speak Italian with an english accent. Before the age 6/7, think of how many new things you learn everyday... the brain has a capacity to learn hundreds of new words every week, but by the time you are school aged that learning curve steepens and you can learn less and less new words. The earlier you start speaking Italian to her/with her the faster and EASIER time she will have learning it. Speak with her pediatrician regarding finding a speach pathologist or equivalent to confirm this if your husband is still very against it, because waiting until she is 6 will make a huge difference.
