How Worms In Small Intestines Can Be Spread To Others

How can you tell if a ferret has intestinal worms?

I have a ferret (4 years old) who I suspect has intestinal worms. I've never noticed him to have problems with the apperance of his bowels, until now. I have a puppy that was diagnosed with worms but has been on meds to clear the problem for about 2 months now. In my ferret's bowels, I noticed that there appeared to be specks of white string-like "somethings" in them.
I can only speculate that he acquired them (if he has them) from playing were the puppy had been ... (I allow the ferret ONLY to play in the bathroom). The puppy had previously been in there. However, the puppy uses puppy pads and does not step in her bowels (or at least I haven't seen trampled on poop).

Is it likely that my ferret has worms? How dangerous are intestinal worms in ferrets? Please any adivce will be greatly appreciate.
