I Am Looking For An Apartment In The Oakland Ca Area Does Anyone Have Any Suggestions

What are the best areas to rent in Oakland, CA?

It all depends on what your are looking for when renting. I am going to try to keep this as simple as possible because in Oakland you can get a plethora of combination communities. If the cost of rent is your worries I’d recommend renting in the flats of east oakland (this goes from 14th Ave to 135th Ave) and research area best fits your lifestyle.if you are looking for something conservative and quiet and possibly has a nice view look towards the Oakland hills.if you are like to party or casually have drinks I’d recommend living closer to lake Merritt or downtown Oakland. And last but not least West Oakland is somewhat of a mixture of all of the above and may even be the cheapest part of oakland to rent. Now with all of that in mind please take note that oakland has pockets of good and bad areas all over so be sure to visit the areas before making a decision.

Is Oakland a dangerous area?

My husband is going to be starting Berkeley business school in the fall so we have to move to SF from NYC.

I have been dying to get a place with a yard, I'm so sick of being cramped up in a tiny NYC apartment.

The only rental houses with yards that I can find for under $2,000/month close to Berkeley are in Oakland. Is that a safe area?

It doesn't have to be pristine, I've lived on the South Side of Chicago for 5 years and in East Harlem in NYC for 4 years without incident but I'm worried about drive-bys. LOL I know that sounds so dumb and stereotypical but I know nothing about Oakland or the Bay Area!

What are some of the safe areas to look for housing in the Oakland area?

Aside from the Oakland hills, which is an extremely nice yet relatively expensive area, Rockridge / Claremont, Grand Lake, Temescal, Cleveland Heights, Glenview,  the Mills University area, and the neighborhood around Piedmont Ave. are all pretty nice and safe. Also, the towns of Piedmont and  Montclair, which are both right on top of Oakland, are very nice.

Can anyone tell me how bad Oakland, CA just is?

Might move into Oakland within the next month and would like some feedback on what Oakland is like. I might move into the area around the 19th St. Oakland bart. I've cruised around there in a car and that area looks like crap, until you reach downtown. Around the 19th St. bart, shops are desserted, streets are broken, people that look like thugs around here and there.

I'm not really educated about Oakland but from what I've heard, that whole city is bad, but I need more information that are down to the specifics. I need to know which areas are really bad, which are good, what goes on during the day and what goes on at night, etc etc.

Is East Oakland too dangerous?

Here is what Wikipedia said about east Oakland;

Many areas of East Oakland have been plagued by high crime in the postwar period and still remain a haven for prostitution and drug activity. Companies and corporations continue to bypass Oakland because of its image problem.[citation needed] East Oakland continues to have high unemployment and dropout rates, and its most poverty-stricken neighborhoods continue on a cycle of despair and apathy. The prostitution scene in the city was exposed in the 1970s with movies like "The Mack", and in the early 1980s was one of the first areas in the United States where crack cocaine became a serious epidemic.[4] During that time much of the drug trade was run by the notorious Felix Mitchell.[5]

Unlike South Los Angeles, there are no major affiliations with Bloods or Crips in Oakland.[citation needed] Drug turf determines its street politics.[citation needed] East 14th Street was plagued with a prostitution and drug problem for years.[6] Oakland City council changed the name of East 14th Street to International Blvd in 1996. After the change, prostitution continued for years until the California Highway Patrol stepped in to patrol the stretch (also known as State Route 185 to 42nd Street) until crimes went down.

In addition, the city of Oakland is ranked in most surveys in the top; 25 most crime ridden cities in the USA. And East Oakland bears the majority of the cause of this.

Is oakland, CA dangerous?

The above poster said that "Oakland isn't safe," and then suggested you look at Piedmont and Lake Merritt, which are *in Oakland.* Durr.

The area of that apartment is in area that is being rapidly gentrified and is overall reasonably safe. It's close to Mills College and across the street from a mall, so there will always be a pretty hefty police presence; in fact, I'm pretty sure there's a PD station right around there.

There are some VERY nasty areas of East and West Oakland - I'd know, I lived at San Pable & Mead in West Oakland, one of the worst corners. I saw someone open fire on a stoop full of gang members with an AK47 (no one was hit), saw a crackhead strip down and walk down the street naked and trying to pick fights with people... but that area is VERY far removed from other parts of Oakland, and is NOT the norm! People who automatically say, "Oakland is very dangerous and you should not live there" are generally paranoid suburbanites who have been there maybe once or twice in their life, a long time ago, even though they live in an adjacent suburb a few miles away. Sad. I've lived in the Bay Area less than two years and already know more about it than two-thirds of the locals...

I, personally, would look more at an area like Piedmont, Rockridge, Lake Merritt, etc. or the newly-gentrified strip down Telegraph downtown. Safe, clean, mostly middle-class people, fun bars and restaurants, and very close access to the BART.

Santa Rosa is a bit of a hike from Oakland, but it sure is closer than Wisconsin! You can still see them on your days off, easily.

Are there any plasma for money donation centers in SF/Oakland Bay Area?

I just moved to Oakland, California, and I have spent two hours on search engines looking for a plasma donation center somewhere in Bay Area but I cannot find a single one. Does anyone know of any plasma FOR MONEY donation centers any where around bay Area: SF, Oakland, San Jose, anything. I am willing to drive up to 50 miles to get to one. All my searches bring up actual blood donation centers. I am NOT interested in donating whole blood. I am looking for a place that pays for blood plasma. I just moved here from Southern California, and there were two in my city, but I cannot find a single one anywhere around here. I greatly appreciate any help. Thank you

What are the safest yet cheapest neighborhoods in Oakland?

The teo characteristics are not to be found together, anywhere, not just in oskland. Craigslist is your best resource for rentals by neighborhood, and you can get an idea of the price to rent one room. You will not be happy with the results of that search because it is. It realistic.I googled ‘Oakland crime map’ and got lots of hits. Here is a link to the Oakland police dept crime maps: Crime Statisticsyou say you will be renting, but this is general advice for people living in Oakland.Forget expensive alarm systems. you can make your house look like a bad target using various inexpensive tools - for example, a ‘beware of dog’ sign costs under a dollar. No need for a dog! All the other suggestions are on the Oakland police department website. in a good, low crime neighborhood here recently there was a crime spree where all the houses had central station alarms. In each case the burglars got the flat screens and computers out long before the police got there.I have lived in good and bad parts of Oakland all my life, and have owned property in Oakland since 1990. It’s a great town.
