I Bought A Trailer And The Current Registration Has Different Plate

Can i tow my car without a current registration?

If the car is on a tow dolly or trailer, it does not need to be registered. If you are thinking about towing it with a tow strap, stop. Towing on the road with a tow strap, rope or chain is illegal and dangerous.

I'm buying an out of state car with expired registration, what do I have to do to get it from Washington to Oregon?

OK, it's currently registered in Washington but has expired tags, and you're an Oregon resident, and you need to drive it while the registration transfers and updates?Your most cost effective move is the Oregon DMV Vehicle Permits - for light vehicles (cars, most trucks), it's $30 for 21 days. Just walk into your DMV and buy it. Bring cash or a debit card, BTW.The Washington permit is the same price but only good for three days. Which makes it an "emergency use" type of thing, as opposed to "dude, I can drive the car until I get the new tags" kind of thing...

How do you drive a car bought off craigslist without a license plate?

You have some uninformed answers here.
Just be sure you have a bill of sale written up. Handwritten is fine; date, vehicle description, and price. Seller signs it and also gives you the all important "title" which he has signed over to you on the back side. You can take an 8 1/2" x 11" piece of paper and write your own IN TRANSIT signs. Be sure to put the day you bought it date on it and off you go. Get it registered the next business day and you are in business. You don't even need an IN TRANSIT sign. Just be sure you have the bill of sale, title and proof of insurance and if you get stopped, the officer will accept those papers. But you probably won't be stopped.
People are so scared of simple things like that and they shouldn't be. Call Legal Aid which is free or even the police and I believe they will verify what I am saying. That should make you feel better.
Good luck, I'm sure you will do fine.

How do I buy a car in California that has an expired registration?

Just like you would buy a vehicle that has current registration. The only difference being that you are responsible to pay any back fees and penalties that are due before the vehicle can be registered in California. The one exception to this is if the vehicle is on a “Non-op”, which means that the person who owned it filed a certificate of no-operation on the vehicle before the registration expired. If this is the case, you will not have any back fees or penalties.

How do the police know if your registration sticker is expired?

They ask you do you know that your registration is expired?Okay, seriously, most states have a tag on the license plate that indicates the month and sometimes the year that it expires. This is the last day of that month - perhaps more correctly said, the first day of the following month indicated on that little tag. Many are color specific for a particular year. The month is usually indicated also. Say green is the currently issued color for 2018 but yellow is still good if the month indicated on that tag hasn't come and gone. That works great for say Missouri plates in Missouri. Missouri plates in Iowa are perhaps a bit more difficult to determine whether they are still valid, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure this out. And police tend to know what a valid registration tag from a neighboring state plate looks like…the police aren't as dumb as some people think.

Does a boat trailer have to have a title in order to sell it with the boat?

Yes. Any vehicle that has wheels that touch a road ANYWHERE, must have a license plate. Therefore, it must also have a title. This applies to al 50 states in the USA. Even if you purchased the trailer as a kit, it'll have the necessary documentation to get it registered with the DMV or License Plate Agency.

The boat is built by one manufacturer, and the trailer is build by someone else. Each had a registration card and separate Title was issued for each. If both had the EXACT same VIN # & HIN#, then they could be on a single title, but that never happens. So the buyer will have nothing but problems trying to register the trailer and the boat at the Agency.

How do I find out if I owe any penalties for not registering my vehicle for a few years? I bought a motorcycle in Texas in 2010 and moved to another state and didn't pay the registration renewal for a few years. I am moving back to Texas.

I have a ’74 Honda that has not been registered here in Texas for some years (like 20). I did the rebuild work and got it running. It required a safety inspection before it could be registered, so I trailered it to the inspection station, they gave it a passing sticker. Then I went to the tax office with the title. They had simply asked if I had ridden it in the meantime, and I said “no, I just now rebuilt it”. They asked how I got it inspected, and I replied “took it in on a trailer”. No other questions, no muss no fuss. Got new plates and a registration sticker.
