Can dogs die from hot spots?
No! I've never know a dog to die from a hot spot. If left untreated they can cause a bad infection to set in. I suppose if the poor dog got no medical treatment and the infection was left to spread then perhaps the dog could die from the infection, but it would have to be a really awful one! ADD: I hate to say but Vet student should go back to her books. She is completely wrong. Dry skin does not cause hot spots at all. The main cause is the dog having an allergic reaction to a flea bite or an allergy to food or something in the enviroment. I dont like to correct people but she is very wrong on this one!
How soon after giving birth can a dog have a bath?
I would wait a couple of days at least. Make sure to leave her teats alone & make sure she is dry before going back into the whelping box. Also you should talk with your VET about her hot spots. You can give her a bath sooner than a few weeks.....trust me. If she had a c-section you want to wait for at least 10 days. ADD- & that is why I said to make sure she is completely dry before letting her back in with the pups, this way her Temp. will be back to the norm. She's not going to stay chilled for that long. ALSO, if they are using a source of heat in the whelping box , which they should be, this will keep the pups body temp. up. It isn't like the dam will be jumping in an ice cold lake & then in the whelping box.... & btw, your insults are totally off, & uncalled for, this isn't High School. You & I may have different opinions on things, but that's no reason for you to directly insult me. You have insulted my dogs & myself on more than one occasion, that's not very mature. I have no problems with learning from you, but I can also disagree as well, yes? I have plenty of experience with larger breeds as well. I use to groom a Newfoundland. If we were talking about this breed, I would totally agree on waiting until the pups can regulate their own body temperature.

Bad fleas on my dogs! Help? Can I use collar and frontline?
if they came back really fast, then it is the environment that needs to be eradicated of fleas ... you need to clean and launder and vacuum every piece of cloth in the house, especially the ones you and your pets sleep in ... you need to use a special flea spray both in and around the house ... at the same time you need to clean and dip the dogs for fleas ... they live and breed everywhere and they are hard to get rid of once you have even a minor infestation ... and then spray for fleas along all baseboards (including closets), the entryways, and the windows at least twice a month ... please note that the frontline and other products only kill the adults that bite your dogs (b/c it is absorbed into the dog's bloodstream) and/or renders them unable to bread ... they do not seek out and kill a breeding place that can contain hundreds of fleas in a place such as under your bed ... you have to clean them out of the environment and limit their time outdoors, even with a treated yard, or at least walk them on the sidewalk and keel them out of tall grasses and bushes as much as possible ...
I discovered some black specks of something on my dog’s fur. It’s usually in a clump (of black specks). What is it?
Sounds like flea dirt.. roll the pup over and look at his belly between is back legs. If there are fleas they love to congregate and crawl around there.NOW… the bigger question… are they in your house ??? If you want to find out, get up tomorrow morning and put on WHITE socks and walk around and look down at your socks. Fleas are hungry in the morning and are attracted to white things. They will jump on the socks and you’ll see black spots.Next step… FIX IT ! If you don’t address the problem immediately, in 10 days the eggs laid by the fleas today will hatch out. .. MORE fleas, more eggs, and the vicious cycle continues. They do NOT just affect your dog. They affect cats, kids and YOU.Fleas can carry all kinds of diseases such as Typhus which is at epidemic proportions in Southern California right now. It’s important to FIX IT NOW.My personally get Zodiac carpet spray. You can get it at TSC and Petsmart and lasts for months. I get it in a pump bottle. It’s not an aerosol or smelly so that you have to evacuate your place for hours. 5 minutes outside and the mild odor is gone. No clean up and no mess. You can even spray it on the dog but READ the instructions. It kills larvae that hatch out for up to 6 months (I think it’s for that long). But pay attention… if you wash a floor or shampoo a carpet you MUST reapply it.I apply it in my home in March and October and concentrate on the floors just inside doors where the dogs enter and where they sleep.Good luck !
How do you remove ticks from a dog?
Hi!Jose He - founder of something or other, has a very good answer for you! It’s mostly excellent, but I’d like to add a few things.Firstly, you shouldn’t flush the tick down the toilet. If you or your dog was bitten by a tick, stick in on a piece of tape and fold the tape over. The tape suffocates the tick, and then you can save it. If, in the next month, you start feeling flu-like symptoms, you can go to the doctor (for you) or the vet (for your dog) and bring the tick with you. Different ticks carry different diseases, and your vet will be able to identify which tick bit you!Symptoms may appear up to four weeks, which is a month. That’s important to know! I would go a few days over the month mark just to be safe!In addition to the traditional flu-like symptoms (which are typical of lymes disease), keep your eyes peeled for bruises and sudden rashes on your dog’s skin! Rocky mountain spotted fever is another major tick born disease that often gets overlooked.Depending on the area you live in, you may want to get a tick-titer. These are tests that will check for tick-borne diseases on your dog. If you live in the US in the northeast or upper southeast, then ticks are an epidemic in your area and a lot of them carry diseases because this area is overpopulated with white-footed mice, which is where Lymes disease comes from. Tick-titers can only be taken 14 days after the bite has occurred, or they might yield false negatives!Monthly flea preventative is, of course, very important! It’s super expensive if you buy it from a vet, but you can get it much cheaper at a place like Sierra Pet Meds.Bravecto is a really popular brand, and kind of the new “Frontline” which had been popular back in the day. Their Bravecto products are here : Dogs & Puppies - Bravecto - Page 1 - Sierra Pet MedsSome people choose not to give their dogs flea and tick medication during the winter, but if you live in the areas I mentioned above - like New York, Maryland, Virginia, or that general area, you MUST keep your dog on flea/tick preventative year round! Don’t listen to the internet nazis that tell you it will kill your dog or something - I promise you, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever will kill your dog much faster! I grew up in New York, and it’s an epidemic where we live! It’s very dangerous in our area, and people need to be informed so that they know to protect their pets!
My cat is still scratching after being treated for fleas?
He probably still has sores. My female was experiencing Flea Allergy Dermatitis (it's when they're allergic to the flea saliva)....so even now, after putting her on Frontline Plus and killing all the fleas, she's still itching the sores. Once they heal, she'll be ok. I'm guessing your cat will be, too. Don't use ANYTHING by Hartz. And DON'T give your cat garlic. I used to think it was OK, too, but it's not. Onions, Garlic, & Related Root Vegetables Onions contain a substance (N-propyl disulphide) which destroys red blood cells in the cat, causing a form of anemia called Heinz body anemia. Garlic contains a similar substance in a lesser amount. (And your cat won't become reinfested if he's been put on a preventive like Frontline, Advantage, or Revolution.)
