I Got Fired But I Don

If you think you may be fired soon, should you quit?

US answer here:No. That’s the last thing you should do.Being fired, especially when it’s not your fault, means that you stand a good chance of collecting unemployment. You have no chance of this if you resign.Depending on your state of residence, being fired through no fault of your own means you have a good chance of voiding out any non-competition clauses you may be under. At the very least, the courts will be more favorous of you. Quitters don’t have this luxury. You’re just as likely to get a good reference if you’re fired or quit in a timely fashion. If you quit overnight, you stand zero chance of getting a good reference.Basically, there are only two reasons you should quit your job. One: you already have another job or income stream lined up, and the savings to support yourself for a few months in the event of disaster. Two: you have substantial savings, and absolutely need the time off for mental health, taking care of a loved one, etc, and your job skills are such that you can find employment after a few months off. By substantial savings, I mean that you can cover your expenses for at least a year without torching your retirement funds. If a manager doesn’t like you, start looking for a new job and let them fire you. Put in your honest 40 hours to the end.If they pulled out some shady contract you can’t sign in good conscious, give them a counter offer and start looking for jobs. If they don’t accept, let them fire you. Keep putting in an honest 40 hours until the end.If there have been massive layoffs that have you worried about job security, or they’re asking you to put in hours that no human could possibly sustain over the long term… you get the idea.Don’t quit unless that’s what you want. Not what they want.

So, I just got fired. Now what?

For the record, I'm a college student and I've never been fired before. So, I won't say where I worked but it was retail and I got very few hours. They basically said my sales weren't good enough, but getting only a couple hours a week, how could I have done better? I was put on work probation for not doing well and then after a month I was told that I still wasn't doing well, even though the store manager was working with me on several issues I had been having. I knew my sales for the last month were not going to be good enough to save my job, and when I went in I knew I was getting fired, but it still bothers me. Everything that they said I didn't do right, I DID do right and everything they blamed me for was not my fault. It was basically a way of saying "hey, you're getting fired in a little while so get used to the idea since you can't do anything about it." My boss even brought in the district manager to do it, which kind of hurt because if they wanted to fire me, at the very least they could have had the decency of doing it instead of having someone else do it. We were friends, or so I thought. In the end, the district manager just said, "Well, you sucked here and you sucked at doing that and you sucked all over the place, what do you think about me saying that you suck?" and I just replied with something along the lines of, "I didn't think that I sucked that much and I worked very hard to keep my job, especially with all the places I turned down to stay here," and then in the end, he just said, "Well, you suck so you're fired." What was the point of convincing me that I was bad at my job if he just wanted me fired? He could have just skipped to the chase and saved me the trouble.

Now, I just don't know what to do. I'm looking for a new job but I don't know what it's going to mean for a new employer to know that I was fired for what they called, "poor work performance." I don't even think I CAN file for unemployment, considering how few hours I got. What suggestions would you guys give me for the future?

How do i tell my mom i got fired?

Hey im 17, and i got fired from my job. Should i just tell her i quit, since my job backed me up with saying i resigned? I mean shes gonna find out eventually. I also am a senior in highschool, my mom also already knows i hated my job, so should i tell her i quit or fired?

How to tell my mom i got fired?

Instead of worrying about telling her.....just sit down with her and discuss what you can do to keep a job.
Listen to her advice and apply it with your next job.

I just got fired. I do have a lot of money saved up and I don't plan on applying for another job. What should I do to increase my monthly income?

Let me suggest something based on what I would do if I were to be in your position. It is tough to prepare you an investment porfolio without knowing the size of your total savings. But I will give it a shot based on the fact that: a) you do not feel an urgent need to find another job and b) you posted this on the 'travel' topic.15% in emerging market ETFs (BRICs / MINTs)15% in 10yr US sovereign bond yields25% in the best performing mutual fund over the last 3 yrs in your local market15% savings account or US treasuries (if not risk averse) as mentioned aboveRest for consumption (checking/saving). Depending on how long you plan on remaining unemployed, you can create a consumption escrow account and spend on travel, living expenses etc, proportionally to the days you plan on remaining unemployed.(Disclaimer: I'm only sharing this as uneducated advice, I do not profess to have any knowledge of asset management)

Should put the job i got fired from on my resume?

When filling out job applications, don't be negative, but, do be honest and don't lie, because it will come back to haunt you. You can use language like "job ended" or "terminated" if you need to state why you are no longer working at the job. If you are specifically asked if you were fired, you need to answer yes. Lying on a job application is grounds for dismissal at any time in the future and could cost you future unemployment benefits.

I got fired, what should I tell my parents?

I just got fired a few weeks ago. I feel humiliated. I could never tell that to my parents. They had high hopes for me. I don't want to deceive them. Plus, it really hurts my ego to admit that. Should I pretend I'm going to a new job until I find one? It's really difficult. I feel I'm in such mess. Especially that I financially support my family.
