I Got Myself Some Earrings And They Can

What do you think of men wearing earrings?

Both of you are right on target. Sean, your story brought back a lot of memories! I had my left ear pierced at 39 in 1991. I thought maybe I was too old, but just wanted to do it and thought it would be cool to wear an earring. As you well know, it took balls for a guy to get his ear pierced back in those days. It was becoming more common, but older people in particular really frowned on it. I remember vividly being in the mall and walking up to Piercing Pagoda and saying I wanted to get my ear pierced. I was very nervous and embarrassed and must have turned beet red! Sounds crazy now, doesn’t it? But when I looked in the mirror and saw that stud in my ear I really liked it and figured I made a good decision. At first I wouldn’t wear the earring in front of family and friends, only when I was on vacation. After awhile I kind of lost interest and stopped wearing it. Later I found that I missed it, had my ear re-pierced, and this time wore an earring pretty regularly. It turned out I got practically no reaction from anyone except a few buddies who liked to tease me about it which was cool with me. Fast forward to 2008. By this time I was 56 but looked and dressed a lot younger than my age. I was in the mall — a different mall — with my 17 year-old nephew, who wore an earring in each ear and still does. We passed by Claire’s — pretty girly and creeped me out! — and saw a guy in the window getting both ears pierced. My nephew teased me into getting my right ear done and so I impulsively “took the plunge.” Also had a second piercing in the left ear. Totally glad I did. At 65 I still look pretty good and still wear my earrings — small studs or small silver hoops in both ears and a second stud in the left. Sometimes I revert to the old style and wear just an earring or two in my left ear. Can’t wear them to work but otherwise wear them a lot. I’m glad young guys now don’t have to go through all the hang-ups we had and the embarrassment we had to go through about something as trivial as a couple of holes in their ears. Pretty mainstream nowadays. It baffles me that many still make such a big deal out of it. As J.T. said, it’s only a jewelry choice.

How do I remove my first pair of earrings?

I got my ears pierced Dec. 28 and I think I can take them out now (it's been 6 weeks from what I know), they haven't hurt at all and were all right all throught the first stage with the stud earrings they gave me at the piercing shop. Now, I have a question. How do I take them off? I don't want to rip my earlobe or something. They're kinda hard to remove, for some reason.

Do you wear earrings when going to amusement parks?

Just curious. We're going to Cedar Point Friday, and I'm trying to decide if I should wear earrings or not. I wore a pair in my bottom hole but not the top when we went to Busch Gardens last week. I have two piercings in the lobes of my ears. Should I wear two sets of earrings or leave them? (not dangly of course!)

Do you wear earrings when you go to amusement parks?

Thanks!

What are the most expensive earrings you ever bought?

Like $250. Some studs. I'm not a very high maintnace person so I don't go very over the top with the price. Plus, I'm cheap. lol.

Fake earrings give me a headache when I wear them?

When I wear earrings that aren't sterling silver or gold, after a few minutes I get a pounding headache. The thing is, I am not loaded with money so I can't only buy expensive jewelry, I want to buy from Forever 21 or Claire's. I once heard you can put some vaseline on the part that goes into your ear, but I'm not sure if the vaseline is going to hurt my ear even more. I tried the sensitive earrings from Claire's and they still hurt them. Do you have any ideas? Thanks!

I have an upper ear cartilage piercing. What type of earrings are best for that type of piercing?

I'll add to this that whether you choose studs, huggies, or simple hoops, I strongly recommend getting earrings made with hypoallergenic metals. Mainly, that means no nickel. If you don't have an allergy to nickel, you're in the clear, but I still always recommend taking that extra step, to avoid irritation and preserve the piercing. Randomly, people will have no reaction to nickle in a necklace, or even a lobe piercing, but react at the cartilage, or vice versa. If you're okay with being exposed to nickel, stainless steel is a good choice, and a lot of earrings are made with it. It's also cheaper than many other metals.Surgical steel is a great jewellery metal. It's quite safe. While I never recommend getting pierced by the gun, I love the Studex piercing earrings because they are surgical steel. You can buy them online fairly cheap. If you're like me, and have tons of ear piercings, it's an easy, economical way to get enough matching earrings for your ears. Piercing jewellery sites also sell a lot of items in surgical steel.I also like to recommend sterling silver. It does tarnish, so you do need to clean them once in awhile (but then, you should be cleaning your jewellery anyway), but it's a pretty metal, and only a worry if you're allergic to silver. Sterling silver earrings aren't very expensive, either. All my earrings, minus the daith and tragus, are sterling silver (those two are surgical steel), and I don't have to clean them in silver cleaner very often.Gold is also a popular, safe metal, barring allergies. If you're like me and don't like the colour, there's always white gold. The only issue is the price, which means that for many people, myself included, it's only for special jewellery.Whenever you put new jewellery in, check in it a few times the first week, several times the first day. Like I said before, sometimes people have reactions to metals they've used before. New or old metal, you want to catch if you're having a reaction, or if your skin is turning green (some pieces can be labeled for any of the above metals, but the seller can be a liar, liar, pants on fire) before it gets bad.As for the earring itself, I'm a huge proponent of studs. They look nice, and you're far less likely to get your hairbrush caught on them. They're also generally cheaper than hoop styles with stones in them.Happy shopping!
