I Have A Guniea Pig And It

Can you only get one guinea pig?

After reading the other answers, they all seem to be missing a key point. Female guinea pigs are social creates who require small groups. Males are strictly solitary in the wild. Housing multiple males is possible, as the rest suggest, but is a massive pain the the arse and actually can shorten their life expentency. Female pigs require small groups of 2–4, however due to their size, pens need to be a good size, but a single male will do you very well.Guinea Pigs are also not very active creatures. Getting them a wheel is actually dangerous, as they aren't built for running but for burrowing and a wheel can cause them to trip and break a leg. Also, like all rodents, their teeth continuously grow so you need to provide them with a few small wooden blocks they can go and chew on.Another thing about them is their nutrition is a bit funny as well. About 75–80% of their diet is hay while the rest is the complete diet pellets you can get them. Also make sure to pick up Vitman C infused treats, (at least I'm pretty sure it was C) for them as they cannot naturally create it and require it in their diet. Whoever you buy him from should be able to answer and if they can't, I wouldn't buy from them.As far as outdoor access goes, Make sure they are in a penned in area where nothing can get to them and keep a close eye on them if there are hawks in your area. They really don't like running around much and like to slowly romp around eating grass and purring/squeaking.Source: Pet Store worker and Girlfriend who is obsessed with small animals and mother to many pigs.

If one of your guinea pig dies and you have another one (who the first was close to), will they die soon afterwards?

If one of your guinea pig dies and you have another one (who the first was close to), will they die soon afterwards?Thank you for the question.Yes this can happen, and does happen. It happened with two of my female guinea pigs, Sootica who was intelligent confident and very tame, and Godvery, who was a nice, gentle, shy guinea pig.Godvery died the day after Sootica died.I hope that this answers your question.

Where to get a Guinea Pig?

Just got a Guinea Pig from my local shelter, and I want to get a second one but they don't have anymore. There are no rescues or shelters even somewhat close with Guinea pigs, none on craigslist either. Only option I have is Petco, i know Petco's reputation and I'm scared to get one from them but I have no other choice at the moment. I dont want my Guinea pig to be on his own for to long, is buying from Petco okay? I dont really want to support them but it's my only option.

Is my Guinea Pig too old to breed?

The best age to breed female guinea pigs is 5 months. At about 8 months old their pelvic bones fuse together meaning they can't perform normal labor. You have to get them pregnant by 5 1/2 to 6 months or you'll likely face serious labor complications often resulting in the death of the sow and her babies. I understand the desire to breed guinea pigs but it's risky and not recommended. If you want to expand your family I'd suggest shelters. Many need homes and if you want to see baby guinea pigs and go through the birthing process you could try to foster a pregnant sow . I don't recommend breeding any cavies but please don't put your older pigs through it. Any guinea pigs need to have given birth before their pelvic bones fuse and then they don't fuse so unless they've given birth before you'll lose the sow and her babies.

Is my guinea pig depressed?

I have a guinea pig who is a little over a year old & she was recently diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection, which thankfully doesnt seem to have spread to my other piggies. well i took her to the vet and she had to be separated from the four other pigs. She just finished her antibiotics and sounds better, but doesnt seem to have interest in food or water that we have to continue to force feed her with a syringe. Is this because she is depressed she isnt with the other pigs? As soon as i clean the cage out well to get the illness out and put her furry friends back with her will she go back to normal or is she always going to be like this?

Can a Guinea Pig get dehydrated?

Signs a guinea pig maybe dehydrated include:
Small than normal droppings or tear drop shaped ones.
Very strong smelling urine (because its not flushing the system as well and is more concentrated)
Less frequent urination
Sunken eyes and tacky gums (very dehydrated)

If you don't think he's drinking enough, he may be getting his fluids from somewhere else and not actually dehydrated at all. If you feed him lots of fruits and veggies that have lots of fluids, he should be getting enough. I have two guines pigs who don't drink a lot of water because they get freshly washed lettuce, and other veggies everyday.

If you're really not sure about it, check his teeth to make sure their not broken. I had a guinea pig who broke his bottom teeth and couldn't drink his water at all. If that's the case, take him to the vet right away and they can show you how to feed and water your guinea pig.

Should I get another guinea pig? I got one recently from a friend who could no longer care for it. It came alone, but I’ve been told it is better to have them in groups. It’s been living alone for years now, but I’m scared that it’s lonely.

Should I get another guinea pig? I got one recently from a friend who could no longer care for it. It came alone, but I’ve been told it is better to have them in groups. It’s been living alone for years now, but I’m scared that it’s lonely.Thank you for the question. I do delight in receiving these sorts of questions.Congratulations, it is very kind of you to consider the social need of guinea pigs.Yes, I would definitely recommend that you do get another guinea pig. Keep in mind that nor all guinea pigs get along well.It it is a male, and you get another male as a companion, it might fight with another male, and become injured.Male guinea pigs usually get along if they meet, and bond as baby brothers, or meet as young babies weeks. Some male guinea pigs will get along well with another male guinea pig. if there is a very big age difference, of about three years, and their personalities are compatible.
