I Have A Question About Commercial Photography.

Question about photography degree?

Talk to an advisor at your local college you plan to attend because every school is different as far as what you can/ need to take to graduate or get a degree. There are different areas of photography you can major in. You can get a general degree in photography or you can go deeper and focus on like graphic design, sports photography, photoshop etc. Good luck in whatever you do

Which camera is best used for commercial photography shown in magazine or on Met-Art and Femjoy?

Yes, what you see in magazines and art exhibitions is often taken by cameras that cost similarly to luxury cars (into $30,000-50,000 range for a kit). But these cameras don't take the pictures you see in magazines. As a matter of a fact no camera can take great pictures. Just like a great set of carpenters tools can not build a beautiful house, a set of nice pots and utensils won't cook a gourmet dinner and the best available paintbrushes and paints won't draw the state of the art pictures... All of these things, and cameras too - are the tools used by respective professionals!

If you don't know what you're doing, and from the way you asked the question, I have a feeling that you have never studied photography as an art - you won't be able to create a masterpiece with even the best equipment out there. On the contrary, if you do know all about exposure and light, focal lengths apertures and shutter speeds, how to use depth of field and bokeh, know the rules of composition and how to create appropriate lightning for the scene, and how to use various equipment and props, how to pose the models and how to choose the right shooting conditions and of course have an eye for all that - then even some of the most basic cameras out there will produce great works of art in your hands.

As you've already been told - your budget pretty much limits you to Nikon D90 with the kit lens, which is probably not the camera that is used by most magazine photographers (although could be, because it is perfectly capable). But don't expect it to make wonders for you. Remember, the success of a shot is about 80% dependent on the skill of the photographer, and only 20% (if not less) on the equipment, if not less! Perhaps you may want to buy a cheaper D5000 camera and invest the remainder of the money in taking at least a class or two in photography, or buying some good books and studying on your own? I have a feeling that this strategy will produce results that would be closer to what you want to achieve, than D90 and no studying at all.

Commercial photography vs. Non-Commercial Photography?

What is the difference and what can you do and not do with each. I know several places charge a fee for a Commercial photographer to take pictures on their property (Gardens, parks, ...) and it's free for non-commercial. Who is a commercial/non-commercial photographer? What defines a commercial/non-commercial photographer?

Have any photographers found commercial success through  using Instagram ?

Absolutely. Photographers that utilize Instagram correctly can definitely find commercial success through Instagram.I have a few photography friends who have a very distinct style. People have noticed their Instagrams and have hired them based off of that. Check out @bankpyt. His commercial photos are much different than his Instagram style.I have just over 5,000 followers, and have already scored a few gigs through my photos (which aren’t even the style of photos I am usually paid for - I post a completely different style on my Instagram). I also have a few brand deals, so get paid to advertise their brands on my Instagram. The more followers you have, the more deals you get.Note that it can be hard to gain followers on Instagram due to the nature of the platform. If you just post a bunch of your commercial work, you likely won’t get exposure. You must have a theme and post photos that are of a consistent style. There are photographers who don’t do this and still have tons of followers, but you can’t get to that point if you don’t start out with a common theme.

How do I price a commercial photography photo shoot?

A company asked for my day rate and I didn't know what to tell them. How much should my date rate be? Does that include the shots? How many shots should I unclude?

How do I start a business as a professional commercial photographer and keep the ball rolling?

By keep the ball rolling I assume mean how do you keep a steady flow of business? I'm not a commercial photographer but I have hired them for jobs before.I look at a commercial photographer who runs their own business as being a great sales person with the ability to take amazing photos. As a photographer, YOU are you business.Three major traits you need...Portfolio - Assuming you are skilled at what you do, you need a diverse portfolio and it needs to be easily accessible for people to view it. i.e. a user friendly website, brochure, etc.Network/Relationships - You might be an outstanding photographer, the best in your field, but if you don't spend time building a network of great relationships with people that can help you get referral business or hire you directly, then you're not going to get anymore fast. Personality - Plain and simple, you've got to be likable. No one wants to work with anyone with zero personality. There have been times in the past where I've chosen to work with a particular person not because they were the best, but because I enjoyed working with them and they made my life, as the client, easy.Tips on just starting: You may have to lower your rates a little to get in the door to bid on some projects in the beginning, but never go too low. If you don't have a large portfolio, be honest, tell the prospective client that you're still building up your portfolio and and that you're trying to be competitive to do so. People tend to have the perception that more money = more skills and vice-versa.Start locally, and try to become the go to person/firm for your area. Do a lot of networking, carry business cards, send out direct mailers, prospect marketing directors through LinkedIn, etc. Meet as many people as possible!Hope this helps a little.
