I'm the same way. I studied music theory and interval training in school and have near perfect pitch, yet I'll be damned if I can understand most lyrics. I can pick out chords, key signatures and notes just fine. Lyrics? Not so much. I have noticed that I have a problem understanding speech, when the person speaks with an accent. I've noticed most people are much better at this than I am. I have attended conferences with some really great speakers and got nothing out of it because I couldn't understand them. :( My brain hears the tones and syllables spoken, not the words. I think this has something to do with why I struggle more than others. Maybe you have the same problem with spoken word?

Other musicians know each note of each song. And often (not always), that's a lot more work than the singer
