I Knocked My Finger A Week Ago And The Joint Is Still Painful And Swollen. Should I Rest It For

My finger is swollen and when i bend it, it hurts! what could this be?? :(?

...i have broken both hands(boxers fractures) and most of my fingers on both hands(and have also had just sprains on other occasions)...and in every single one of my breaks i have never had too much pain..and when it is a break it will only hurt then you try to actually USE it(like trying to grip something) ...not just hurt when you bend it!!!

...if it hurts at rest and only hurts more when you bend it then it is not broken... it is just a sprain!!! sprains hurt way more than a break will ever hurt!!! ...ask any dr!!!

Are swollen, painful fingers common with volleyball players?

My daughter is a high school volleyball player and she told me that you shouldn't be having these types of problems as often as you do.
If you are a setter, this might be a little more of an understandable problem, but you still shouldn't be having it for this long. SO, I would suggest that you first look at your diet. Have you made any changes such as the addition of junk food. Foods like this contain considerable amounts of salt in your body which causes swelling. The swelling is going down during the day because you are active.
I think you should be drinking more WATER during the day to compensate for the amount of physical activity you are doing. Especially since you've probably been seditary during the summer. Please make this WATER and not a sports drink or a flavored drink. WATER will help your body to flush the additional salt in your body IF you have excess, it will also help your body to release the excess fluids to reduce swelling.
Good luck on your season.

Why is my finger still swollen, its been 2 months?

It is not unusual for a "jammed" finger to be swollen and stiff for quite a few months after the initial injury. It is possible that you had a more significant injury to the ligaments, tendons or even the bone(s) than you realized at the time. The middle knuckle (also known as the PIP joint) can get very stiff and painful after an injury like this. You should see your family doctor or even better a hand doctor to be evaluated to make sure you do not have any ligament, tendon damage or bone damage. You may also end up being referred for some hand therapy to help you decrease the swelling and for therapeutic exerices. Good luck.

How do I know when my sprained finger has healed?

Sprains take a long time to heal. Most important is for you to realize that joints in fingers are like a hinges in a door. They either allow the door to move like an interior door of a house or like a garage door but not both ways. Fingers move toward your palm (flexion) and they can move straight as in putting your hand flat on a table (extension). They should not move side to side except for the very big knuckle. If you can easily move the joint side to side you should see a hand surgeon as you may have torn a ligament. But you should be able to bend it all the way into your palm and straighten it all the way. If you can’t then you should see a hand therapist.Do not judge healing with the size of a joint in a finger. Once it has enlarged from swelling following a sprain, it won’t go back to being the size it was before the sprain usually. It will always look bigger like it is still swollen. Just make sure it is stable as I described above, moving normally and pain free. This could take 3–6 months. Good luck.

After punching my knuckles get swollen, will they eventually stop swelling every time?

Just keep gradually conditioning your knuckles until they change their form. Don't cripple yourself - take the tempo you can live with for 20 years. Moderate stress on knuckles (like knuckle pushups) will signal your body that this part needs growth. My knuckles are still saying I’ve spent years in karate, although I left it 15 years ago.You will never be able to bare-handedly punch everything with full force and get away with that. Tolerance will go up, you will be able to punch harder things for longer, but some limits will remain.A good conditioning involves months and years of push-ups on knuckles and a gradual makiwara punching from light to harder, feeling your limits.Knuckles will hurt after that. They will feel weak and damaged until recovery in a few days or a week (in harder cases). There might be a strange feeling - like knuckles are filled with crushed ice. That stays forever whenever you push your limits. But beware. I’ve seen newbies damaging their hands when suddenly trying to smash a bottle or a makiwara and spending the next few weeks on sick leave. Because they don't to it gradually and don't have a clue of what conditioning looks like.I’ve seen guys bruising their skin away from knuckles, when trying to use a fist where palm might suit better. Avoid too much damage to your bones. Deep injuries might stop your hobby for a long time.

I accidentally stabbed my finger with a needle in really deep? Help?

Hi. I accidentally stabbed my middle finger on my left hand with a needle about an hour ago, and the needle went probably half way through my finger... The needle was a sewing pin. I was carving a tiny pumpkin (for Halloween) and the pumpkin had pins in it, and I stupidly stuck my hand in the pumpkin trying to remove the seeds (forgetting about the pin needles) and the needle stabbed my finger really deep and I tried to pull my hand out in panic but that just stabbed the needle even deeper. So I pulled the needle out of the pumpkin and my finger and pulled my hand out, and my finger started bleeding like CRAZY immediately. And my finger started hurting like crazy and turning really red. So I rushed to the sink and ran my finger in cold water for 30 seconds, and then put a paper towel on it and held it for a minute. Then I removed the paper towel and my finger got really swollen, and very purple (maybe from internal bleeding?), and it feels really numb. I put Neosporin on it, and a band aid but I'm really worried. I got my TDAP shot a few years ago, but I'm still worried that the needle was dirty and I may have gotten an infection. When I hold my finger I can feel it throbbing. And my finger is still really swollen so should I put some ice on it? What should I do? Help! And thanks in advance!

Why does My arm swell up and is in treasonous pain after shooting methamphetamine?

You might have a blood clot in that arm. I took care of a patient who was a former heroin user. He hadn't shot up in years and then one day decided he wanted to. He shot up in his groin. His leg ended up swelling and it was real painful. A scan revealed a blood clot in his vein in his groin and it was obstructing blood flow. He was put on a blood thinner infusion and then had to take a pill for a matter of months once he left the hospital. Not only are blood clots painful but if they break loose from your arm or leg and travel they can end up in other parts of the body and really do some damage. Brain = stroke. Heart = heart attack. Lung = inability to breathe.Go get it checked out if you haven't already. You may get a lecture on quitting your habit but you won't get into any legal trouble at the hospital. We want everyone to be safe and healthy, addicts included. If you continue to inject you may want to consider 81 mg aspirin a day. It thins your blood out and reduces the risk of complications from clots.

I hurt my finger in basketball in P.E.?

i had the ball and im not sure if the ball or the defender hit my finger today during Phys. Ed.. It became swollen instantly and i went to the school nurse. Our nurse isn't really helpful and gave me an ice pack without even looking at it.. That was about 6+ hours ago.. It really hurts.. It's not bruised but its a darker color pinkish than the rest of my fingers. It's my middle finger on my left hand.. I wanted to go to the ER after school but my mom said to wait to see if it got better. It's not getting better.. I crack my knuckles a lot and i can't bend my finger as much as all the others now.. and it hurts toward the knuckle not the nail.. any help? Should I go to the ER?
