I don't understand Algebra 1 at all?
I'm in 8th grade this year. It's only the 3rd day of school and im already so confused. I took this algebra readiness diagnosis inventory test thats not going to be graded yesterday and it was SO hard. My teacher let us bring it home tonight to review and tomorrow we're going over it. My older sister tried helping me but I still don't understand it at all! Im terrible with integers and variables especially when I can't use a calculator. Questions like (5/6) divided by (-15) and -3 (4a +5) are on it. Also how do you do this problem = 3(2x +4) + 8(6+4x) ??? PLEASE HELP ME UNDERSTAND!!
Why don't I understand algebra?
I have no idea what MENSA is. If it is a learning disability there should still be techniques to get around it. Algebra is a simple concept and should be easy to understand if you approach it correctly. Essentially you can solve for all the variables for any system of equations as long as you have an equal or greater amount of distinct equations compared to variables. Just rearrange and plug in. Don’t worry with examples with tons of equations if you’re only 13, matrices will simplify it a lot when you get into more advanced stuff.P.S. Sorry for the bad grammar and organization, I am extremely sleepy.
Want to kill myself because l cannot understand math?
hey, I am rubbish at maths. And my brain hurts too when I have to do any and I am 29! Maths isnt the be all and end all of education. Why dont you go see your tutor and explain how much its getting you down? Can you get any private tuition? Perhaps if you explain to your tutor how depressed its making you they can ease off on the pressure? They might be able to come up with some way of making it a bit easier for you, like allowing you to work slower through the workbook or allowing you extra time for homework or something? Mention to your tutor about a learning disability. They can test you for things like that at school so you should ask cos they can arrange a test for you. Dont let it get your down. Remind yourself of the subjects you are good at!! Just because your not very good at maths doesnt make you a failure. It doesnt mean your going to be unemployed for life and have no money. Lots of people fail maths and have successful lives. Not everyone is brilliant at everything. We have to just work with what we have. Focus on building your self esteem in other areas. If you can keep your self esteem up in other subjects then it might balance out this horrid experience your having with maths. Are you better at Art, English etc? Usually people are better at Arty subjects or Maths and science subjects. Not at both. Of course you get really annoying people who are great at everything but they are just very lucky that their brain is like that. Focus on career ideas that will use your strengths. So, ok your not great at maths, but there are plently of other career paths where you dont need maths so look into those and start working out if any of those careers interest you. That will give you a goal to work towards and will reassure you that you wont be a hobo. :) Dont give up with maths tho. Do keep at it. Its better to try to get it then not try at all. It will help career wise if you have it cos it will just give you a wider range of options to choose from. You will change your mind bewteen now and when your 21 as to what career path you want to go down. So try to keep all your options open. Good luck

well there's nothing to hate urself....coz may b maths may be ur weakness....but dnt forget ur other strengths...the problem is that u dnt like this subject....so no matter how hard u try to study n understand it, in background of ur mind simultaneously, there' s one hidden rigidity that i hate this subject and i dnt want to learn it...thats what makes u dnt understand this sub...so theres nothing to b guilty abt it that u r weak at this sub...and i kno its necessary to learn this as u hav to clear 10th grade to go ahead in college....so first of all stop feeling guilty or hating urself...that positivity will help u to remove grudges from this sub...u may feel that y to waste energy wen u dnt like or wen it'll b of no use in future....but it'll b useful atleast for passing 10th grade.... dnt try to learn it at haste by thinking u hav very less time...try reading txt books by ur self n try to understand (coz u wanna clear 10th grade)...solve sums....if at all u cant understand then approach the tutor... i also recommend u to go for a check up for dyslexia...its related with cases wer ppl r not so good at numbers...they even get confused in alphabets like the write bog instead of dog....may b there u can get a better solution... I don't understand Algebra at all and I am studying geometry this year. I am overwhelmed with my other studies too. How can I caught up on math (preferably quickly) so that I can understand my geometry homework?
Just understand the fact that a,b ,x,y used in various formulae of algebra are just numbers ..like for a situation.. and as the situation can change we call them variables..See you must have heard a +b whole squared = a squared + b squared + 2ab ..Here whole squared means they added first then squared.For example -(5+6)^2 {5+6 whole squared }= 11^2 = 121(11*11)While using the formula we get(5+6)^2= 5^2(25) + 6^2(36) + 2*5*6 (60) = 121So that means by using the formula we get another way to do the same thing ..These algebric formulae are really helpful when you need to use raised to the power 3 or to do a lot of fancy maths :-)Hope you understood this
Math makes me cry (literally)?
Oh yeah! You most definitely (I'm guessing you want Biology or something not like Phys or Chem?) are not going into a career where maths will be used and just don't understand why you have to learn it (you may not realise this, but you probably subconsciously do feel this way). I'm one of the top students in my class and have horrid problems with maths because of the same reason. I'm going into History and Linguistics and don't understand why I have to have a maths education past Algebra II (I believe you should have up to that). I didn't have problems until I was in higher maths courses though, I was one of top maths students up until 9th grade. I also study all the time, and like you, failed my exam sophomore year in Algebra II Trig. after managing to get As in Geometry my freshman year (my midterm though, not my final). It's probably a combination of your hate for it and you may just not have a mathematical mind (I know I don't). Your lack of interest in it is also why you're zoning out during lessons. All I could suggest is trying to keep as much focus as possible and don't be afraid to ask your teacher for help, I'm sure she'll understand (you wouldn't be her first student who just can't comprehend it, so don't stress it). Tutoring can do wonders in helping you grasp concepts in a way you'll understand! Also about your averages, I'm sure they'll raise once you go to tutoring. Colleges also would see you're improvement and actually probably respect it because they'll notice that you took responsibility for your grades enough to seek help! I don't know what level maths you're currently in, but maybe taking easier courses could help also. I hope this was somewhat helpful and I wish you luck in improving your maths grades!
I can't concentrate or understand anything in school. What's wrong with me?
Hey there. Ok first I want you to understand your not "retarded" don't be so down on your self. No one is the same we all have our strong and weak points. You may have the illness Dyslexiaa which is a very common in humans. 10% of the population has some kind of Dyslexia. Dyslexia is an illness were you find it hard toconcentratee and you cant pick up stuff being said at school. Their is nothing to worry or stress about.recommend you visit your doctors to see if you do have this illness. Just dont worry it is very common. It doesnt make you a retard. Also dyslecticic people might not be good at everythinb but they do have a strong point. Yours is algebra geometry and English. (And i have to say algebra is a very hard subject to learn) I hope this helped, and btw nothing is wrong with you ok... Its common. Be proud of who you are.
Math is literally ruining my life, what can I do?
I've been trudging through school for a few years now, and it hasn't been easy. I went to school for a little while when I lived in WV, but I just took all the classes in the Native American Studies department and didn't even touch my requirements. Then I dropped out, and worked as a funeral florist. Then I recently moved to NJ, and have actually gotten serious about going to school. I've been doing really well, but my progress is coming to a screeching halt. I have to take one math class, even though my major is Social Science. In order to take that one math class, I have to take a test to qualify. I did so badly on that test that I am required to take THREE non-credit math classes before I can take the college level class. That's FOUR SEMESTERS OF MATH. And I go to community college!!! I can't do math. I am so bad at math that I literally don't know how to subtract. I took pre-algebra three times in high school. I got in trouble with my insurance company because I wasn't reading the letters they sent me because there were too many numbers on the pages and I didn't understand. Every year in school, my math teachers told me, their eyes gleaming with hope and assurance, that I simply had "math fear", and once I got over it I would be just fine at math. It was always fun to see their horrified faces when they realized quickly that no, I didn't have math fear, I just can't freaking do math because my brain doesn't work that way. Let me repeat: I CANNOT SUBTRACT! Yeah, I can subtract simple numbers, but today I didn't know how to subtract 432 from 1081 on my math test. It is not normal to not know how to subtract. SO, now that I have ranted a bit, is there anything I can do to get my school to not make me take math? I will drop out of school if I have to take 4 math class. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh yeah, and ★ this question please!!
