I need an opinion on which book I should read?
Definitely go for Mark Twain. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a great book, with both funny and dark parts. Tom Sawyer is not as good, but still not bad. My second choice would be Hawthorne, and Cooper would be a distant 3rd. If I remember correctly, Mark Twain used to say that Cooper was a dreadful writier.

How many times do you need to read a book or text to completely understand it?
There was time in my life wherein I failed at an internal paper (molecular biology) at postgraduation days because I could not understand the scientific texts written by native-english speakers. I did my studies in tamil medium predominantly and I find it difficult to comprehend scientific english at my college days. Even I want to run away and discontinue my postgraduate studies, but I persisted became a class-topper student when I finished postgraduation. It took tonnes of effort from my side.It saddens me deeply that “the art of reading” is not taught at schools/colleges well, and if parents are not well-educated, they may not teach their kids “reading” at home. If a person who does not have a reading habit, he will forever be struggling in life.Reading is easier, but getting the meaning or retaining the essence of reading is what is difficult. Making the meaning of a written text and retaining the same is an art that comes only by practice. so even if you dont understand a few sentences or a paragraph that’s OK. If a person has a consistent reading habit, after a span of 3–6 months, he will catch up reading easily, and the struggles to make meaning would disappear as time goes by.
