I Need Help With The Book A River Runs Through It

A River Runs Through It (Book)?

I just need some help figuring out some stuff. What genre is this book? I thought it was nonfiction but on the copyright pg. it says fiction. Also, what symbols are there? I can't seem to find any. Thanks.

I need help with the movie ''A river runs through it''?

fly fishing is a metaphor. It's about finding the rhythms to life. Both Norman and Paul approached life differently--they had found different rhythms. to his father all good things (trout and salvation) comes by grace and grace comes through art and art does not come easily. (not exact quote but close) life like fishing takes practice and skill.

the title is referenced at the end to the poem. "Then in the Arctic half-light of the canyon, all existence fades to a being with my soul and memories and the sounds of the Big Blackfoot River and a four-count rhythm and the hope that a fish will rise. Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. The river was cut by the world's great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time. On some of those rocks are timeless raindrops. Under the rocks are the words, and some of the words are theirs. I am haunted by waters."

it's about looking at life as an artform. about seeing the patterns and beauty in life, even when you don't understand it. about trying to live within the world's pattern rather than fighting it.

In the book and movie A River Runs Through It, What is the significance of the broken right hand?

"He went down fighting"
Or a fancier way of answering that, found in a book forum----
"He fought with reckless abandon and callous disregard for his own well being, much like how he lived the rest of his life."

It's really more of how you think of it.

Which book would you give to someone to help them to understand you?

Hmm. Well, to really understand me one should read my Ennyman’s Territory blog for about the last ten years, but you didn’t ask that, so you want a book.I am complex and no one book will do. Here are my favorite short stories and novellas:Favorite Short StoriesIf I were to assemble an Anthology...1. The Bet by Anton Chekhov2. A Piece of Steak by Jack London3. The Lagoon by Joseph Conrad4. The Secret Sharer by Joseph Conrad5. The Book of Sand by Jorge Luis Borges6. The Aleph by Jorge Luis Borges7. There Are More Things, again by Borges8. The Harness, by John Steinbeck9. Here We Are, by Dorothy Parker10. The Doctor & the Doctor's Wife, by Ernest HemingwayPLUS (Must be mentioned): The Mirror and the Mask, by Jorge Luis BorgesFavorite Novellas1. The Tenth Man, by Graham Greene2. In The Movie A River Runs Through It...?

The woman is Brad Pitt's character (Paul) girlfriend. She was passed out (drunk) in jail - she and Paul were thrown in jail after he beat up a man who threw racial slurs at Paul's gf - she is an Native American - though we are not shown the fight. Craig Sheffer's character, Norman, gets a call from the jail, comes down, and picks the two up.

What is the plot of the movie A River Runs Through It?

I’m always a bid sceptical of questions like this because I suspect someone is trying to get their homework done for them. All right . . . so this is a story that is absolutely worth your time, in both the novella and movie forms. The novella by Norman Maclean is possibly the finest short novel ever written. A beautiful story, beautifully told and it only takes a couple of hours to read. The movie is a bit longer than that, but is one of my top all time favorite films. In short, it is the story of the two sons of a Methodist minister (don’t worry, it’s not a preachy story) growing up in the river country of Montana early in the 20th century. The thing that binds them all together is their love of fly fishing, but that is background and provides the metaphor for all three lives. The son that most would think is the favorite progresses from their small town eventually becoming a university professor in Chicago. The wild, reckless son, who is actually the favorite is, in his father’s words “beautiful.” (The young Brad Pitt is perfect.) But this son never outgrows his recklessness, carousing, gambling, loving a Native American Indian, and drinking too hard. He’s also bright and works for the town newspaper, so has money and is more or less respectable, but he tragically goes to far and found beaten and dead in an alley. This leads to the theme of the film, that parents, no matter how much they love their children, simply do not have the ability to either understand or change them. All they can do is to love them unconditionally. Gentle reader - don’t end it here. Watch the movie, read the novella, you’ll be grateful that you did.

How is symbolism used in "A River Runs Through It" by Norman Maclean?

Not much.English teachers spend their lives in attempts to find symbolism where none exists…..and denying that simplicity, itself, is often enough to make a good story.Maclean’s book was more “revealing” than symbolic.Illustration of characteristics we all contain, but often do not realize, and seldom master.Pretty well summed up by the final line of dialog:“It is possible to love completely without complete understanding”

Poetry From The Movie "A River Runs Through It".?

In the movie A River Runs Through It, Norman walks into his fathers study while his father is reading a book aloud. Norman walks in and picks up on his fathers line and together they finish the poetry aloud. The writtings are beautiful and suspect them to be of Thoreau but am not for sure. Could somebody please help me learn who the author may be and from what writtings these lines came from.

-Thanks
