Debate: What are the ways that one can be confident in making a speech in parliamentary debate?

Few really small steps that will make you look really confident :-(Please Note: The best way to look confident is to be confident. So make sure your matter etc when you go to speak is top class, and you aren't confused on your stance etc. What I suggest are other small habits and techniques.)1. Eye contact - Maintain eye contact with the Adjudicator or Judge. It makes you sound extremely confident. It will make your speech extremely engaging, and get you a few brownie points.2. Your pace and volume - this one is a little scenario dependant. But in general, try to speak at a pace and volume that makes it feel like you are having an organised coffee shop conversation. A really calm speaker comes out as more confident that someone who is simply running an express train.3. Movements - A lot of speakers have habits like walking on stage while speaking. They tend to indulge into some kind of locomotion - and that gets pretty irritating when I am trying to listen to you as a judge/observer. Try to stay still for as long as possible - and restrict movements.Other than these - try and practice speaking in front of a cam corder, and play your speeches. Alternatively, try speaking in front of a mirror. You should be able to look into your own eyes while you speak.

What is your strategy when debating on an affirmative side on a topic that you feel opposed to?

I always start planning my debate pretending that I am another person, who is neutral to the topic, or even someone on the opposite side. So for example, my last debate had the topic that “We should ban emergency workers from striking", which I absolutely disagree with. We had to debate it though, so I sat down and wrote out all the people not doing it affected, positive and negative. By doing this I was able to really understand another perspectice (e.g. when emergency workers are on strike the amount of ambulance workers decrease, slowing reaction times and endangering lives)Walk into a debate room or planning from an outside perspective, so that you can learn the opinion you need to take without being your own devils advocate.

Does evolution actually support one species developing into another?

It depends on your definition of species. Even young earth creationists believe in natural selection and "speciation." Take a look at these:
http://www.answersingenesis.org/articles...
http://www.answersingenesis.org/get-answ...

They often claim: “Evolution is just as substantiated as the theory of gravity,” and they like to play on that word “theory.” But, everyone has observed an object falling at 9.8 meters per second squared. On the other hand, no one has observed life come from non-life (chemical evolution), functional complex design come from non-intelligence, or the supposed evolution of life on earth (common descent). They are failing to differentiate between operational science (such as gravity) and historical science (interpreting evidence from the past). And, by the way, gravity as a scientific concept (an attractive force between two masses) was discovered by Sir Isaac Newton who just so happened to be a creationist.

As Dr. Jonathan Sarfati says, we need to quit calling Darwinian evolution a theory (that is giving it too much credit)—“goo to you” evolution is an unsubstantiated hypothesis or conjecture, not a theory.

From what I've seen, I have to agree with Timothy Wallace: “A major reason why evolutionist arguments can sound so persuasive is because they often combine assertive dogma with intimidating, dismissive ridicule towards anyone who dares to disagree with them. Evolutionists wrongly believe that their views are validated by persuasive presentations invoking scientific terminology and allusions to a presumed monopoly of scientific knowledge and understanding on their part. But they haven’t come close to demonstrating evolutionism to be more than an ever-changing theory with a highly questionable and unscientific basis. The situation isn’t helped by poor science education generally. Even advanced college biology students often understand little more than the dogma of evolutionary theory, and few have the time (or the guts) to question its scientific validity.”

'Today's children are fashion victims'. If I am speaking about this topic, what are the points that I can add to my speech for a debate competition?

Well Indeed true!! today’s children are fashion trend’s victims. We all are giving more importance to dressing rather than building personality, instead of teaching to accept as they are, we don’t stop them from using makeup materials to enhance their artificial look which not only kill their natural beauty but also there self esteem. They keep a track of the latest fashion trend with the help of TV commercials, extravagant Newspaper ad that specifically targets those kid’s group, TV series that teach them how to behave like adults( for example view a episode of Pahredaar Piya K ), and of course how can we forget those scripted reality shows which has got the ability to make them sit for hours in front of TV and we cannot except anything better from the Animation department since now a days they are casting shows with those simple love making scenes, leaving impact to their curious mind.Added to this, let focus on the Schools. In order to make oneself the center of attraction among mates, they are doing their best to keep themselves updated with latest development in the world of fashion, yes I am talking about Peer pressure.Well these are the most basic points which are enough to prove the fact that indeed Children now a days are Fashion victims.

What are some debate points for 'arguments against democracy'?

A2AWell….some points are as follows(1) Democracy is essentially about masses and majority. It does not take collective intelligence of mass into consideration. Therefore if masses are illiterate the democracy tend to produce awful result. Ex - Pakistan. The strongest argument against democracy is a five minute discussion with the average voter. - Winston Churchill.(2) Politicians the other hand focus only on securing no. and as a result resort to what is popular vs what is right. Ex. Minority appeasement tactics played in India.(3) Democracy being out delays (read inefficiency) in governance since politicians have to take approval from masses. Ex. Growth of India vs China.(4) In general masses vote and then their responsibility is considered over. They are not held accountable. If a corrupt person is elected we do not see masses held accountable for this. It is somehow again attributed to the “system”.(5) This is again related to point#3. A change of leader could result in change of policies and this bring discontinuity, confusion and risks.(6) Media is used to carry out propaganda which can really influence thinking of people. I am not sure if this is a argument against democracy but still wanted to bring this out,(7) Democracy can easily led to a situation what is termed as “tyranny of the majority”. In this situation, minority does not enjoy equal rights. Ex. several Islamic states.Additional reads:What are the arguments against democracy, assuming that democracy is a sort of government with elected representatives at the helm, in a state with universal suffrage? Also, we'll assume that votes are counted accurately in elections.Criticism of democracy

What are some points against technology? I have to debate on this topic.

When brainstorming main points around which to base your argument, always think about impact.Who or what is being adversely affected by technology?A few that jump to mind include:The general population - laziness becomes more apparent as convenience items are made more and more available.People who work in jobs that will be overtaken by the rise in technology (example: self-service machines in place of humans, the idea that robots could, in the future, replace all service positions)The environment: A strong point as it clashes directly with the idea that the advent of technology is not helping humans as much as it is harming us. Though this can be countered by the opposition’s arguments of eco-friendly companies and so on, the principle behind technology is profit and convenience - not motives in which protection of the environment plays a significant role.Expanding on the impacts you can think of will let you build up a speech that should take the listeners full circle: Claiming technology is more of a liability than an asset, bringing up points to support your statement and your analysis of them (including comparative analysis), and then reiterating your claim in the light of your evidence.Analysis is a necessity for debates, but in-depth analysis is not enough without a comparison of impacts of both sides. Most debates are usually won by the side that brings up the most plausible, or the strongest impacts and that then goes on to explain why theirs are to be primarily considered over the opposition’s impacts.
