I Need To Get A Laptop

Do I need a Laptop for college?

First of all, congratulations on starting college in the fall.

Secondly, I do not think you need a laptop or any sort of computer in college. Most major universities and colleges have computer labs on campus that are open late into the night or sometimes 24 hours a day. These are incredibly useful and sort of negate the need to have a personal computer or laptop. The only downside to some of their computer labs is that they may be crowded during final exams or they may not permit you to take food and drinks in with you.

Having your own computer might be more convenient, however, if the weather outside if less than outstanding (i.e. -10 degrees F). It means you won't always have to walk outside to use the computer lab, unless one is located in your residence hall.

I suppose it also depends on your area of study. For instance, I knew a lot of pre-med students who didn't really need to use their computers because their classes were mostly lab or textbook oriented. I, however, was an English major and a vast majority of my time was spent writing papers. For me, specifically, a personal computer was necessary. It won't necessarily be the same with you.

Try checking out your college or university's website and searching for computer labs on campus. You can check how late they are open, whether they charge for printing, etc. It may help you make your decision.

Should I get a laptop with 1 TB HDD or 256 GB SSD?

Depends what you want to do with it. The 1TB drive can hold 4 times more content than the 256GB one. But the SSD may be 4 to 10 times faster than the HDD.For most tasks, 256GB is plenty. But it could very quickly be used up if you’re storing stuff like video or 3d models. If you’re planning on installing lots of games (and/or many programs) on that, it may also be on the small side. So I’d lean towards the SSD instead, though the size is a bit restricting for some use cases. My own rule of thumb is to have at least twice the capacity of my expected usage volume. You could of course buy an extra external drive to store data which you only sometimes need, they tend to be reasonably cheap - but means you have an extra thing hanging off the laptop when you’ve plugged it in, not exactly condicive if portability is an issue. That said, you get SSDs and HDDs which are much closer to one another’s speeds. You need to find out what the particular model of HDD and SSD in those laptops have as throughput. If (say) the HDD is rated for 150MB/s and the SSD is only 200MB/s, then you’d not see much (if any) benefit in speed - so it may not make much difference, and if the price is similar the 1TB drive is clearly more useful. If the SSD (on the other hand) is rated for something like 400MB/s (or higher) you’d notice the speed differential very clearly and you’d be better off going with that instead (depending on your requirements).Another aspect to “worry” about is power consumption. In most cases a HDD uses more power than a SSD. Meaning the battery charge is going to be used up quicker with the HDD. But again, particular models vary here - you need to check the specs of the laptops to be able to compare properly instead of just relying on some generalisation.Lastly, and to a much lesser extent, a SSD tends to be less prone to mechanical failure. It has no moving parts, so a bump is less likely to cause damage than with a HDD. Though you do get systems which alleviate this problem - e.g. the HDD could be mounted with AVM (Anti-Vibration Mounts) connections (effectively something like rubber packing around it).Personally, I have a laptop with both a 512GB M.2 SSD (around 600MB/s) and a 1TB SATA HDD (around 120MB/s). The OS and most programs installed on the SSD, while most of my data and some less often used programs are on the HDD. Effectively getting the best of both worlds. But those sorts of laptops tend to be much more expensive.

Are laptop sleeves necessary?

To follow up on what Karoly stated, while some laptops are cheap plastic, those made by Apple are quite the opposite. Apple spends a fortune milling their laptop bodies from billet aluminum. This is an expensive, time and energy consuming process. And you see that reflected in the price of their MacBook models. If I am dropping $3K+ on a 15" MacBook Pro, you can bet I am going to be looking to protect it. If I have a bag with an excellent built in sleeve, than maybe purchasing another sleeve to put in the built in sleeve is a bit of overkill. Only you know what you are woking with. If you have a bare bones bag you're going to be putting your laptop in everyday, then I would definitely recommend a sleeve if you want to protect it. A laptop is like any other commodity. When it comes time to upgrade, trade it in or sell it, the better the condition, the more you can ask and the more your going to get. No one likes buying something used that's also beat up. Spending $30 on a good quality laptop sleeve to keep your laptop looking new and protected while you own it is a cheap investment which can be easily recouped when it comes time to upgrade. A couple of caveats, stay away from sleeves made from neoprene (they trap heat) and ones that use zippers for the closure (they can scratch over time). If you really want to protect your baby, you can see if they can fit you into one of these - Premium Leather Sleeves The smell alone is worth the price. Good luck.

Where can we get a free laptop online?

Post on craigslist. People often have a few of them sitting in a closet. Offer to trade or work a few hours (like help them clean the house or do some yard work) and that might entice people as well.A lot of communities have local computer shops that take “trade ins” but really they just chuck the machines in the trash. Go talk to them, tell them you’re a nerd but low on funds and ask if they have any that you could have in exchange for working around the shop for a few days. Might even turn into a job. More than likely they won’t want you to work around there anyway and would give you a machine they can’t resell for free.Watch for technology auctions from schools or universities. They often sell them by the pallet and nobody wants them, so you can get 10 notebooks for $50, then resell them all and turn a profit.

Should i buy laptop or desktop?

From my perspective, there's no question -- buy a laptop.

You always have the option of adding a docking station
(or just adding an external monitor/keyboard) if you
want different ergonomics.

But a laptop lets you move around the house, the campus,
the city, back-and-forth to work and you can take it
with you on trips.

With wireless connectivity everywhere, you can work
where ever you want.

The only advantages I can think of for desktops are:
- somewhat cheaper
- most power/heat dissipation capability
(so you can run more/hotter processors and load
up more peripherals)

If you can get the features you want in a laptop,
then don't tie yourself down to a desktop.

Do I need a laptop in my first year of engineering?

Day before yesterday my neighbor’s daughter was asking the same question. “bhaiya do i need to purchase a new laptop as I am about to persue engineering ?”Me:I told her what is your need and motive to purchase it ?She: Bhaiya because some people told me .So here is your answer. As you are from CSE branch you have to go through lots of programming language (in real time) like C,C++,Java, asp.net. So if you are willing to work in software industry then you have to learn programming. To learn programming you need laptop. If not intersted in coding don’t purchase.Otherwise the end result will be lots of nested private folders along with counter strike and nfs, gta vice city. Don’t just waste money if someone has advice you to purchase.“ I am lala and i invest in anything only when i know i will get return from it “.

What kind of adapter do I need to get a laptop with 1 HDMI port, 2 USB-2 ports, and 1 USB-3 port to run dual monitors?

It depends if your external monitor has a SVGA, DVI or Display port socket !USB to all of these format’s is available. All laptops have one SVGA port which can connect to most external monitors the second one will need a USB to …. One of the formats mentioned above, Try to use DVI if the second monitor has it. with two monitors you can also use your laptop display at the same time. You can either duplicate screens or as extension screens. If you get good quality USB adapters you can extend this to as many screens as you have usb ports

Reasons a teenager should get a laptop?

1) You don't buy a computer for its looks, you buy it for quality. And HP has none any more.

2) You get a laptop if you need one (and know the difference between "want" and "need") AND you or your parents can afford it.

Reasons that don't work:
You can do better in school. No, you can do better in school by studying. If it takes a computer to do well in school, everyone must have failed until we invented computers. (And that's not reality.) Learning doesn't take a computer, it takes desire and effort.

You can research things. You can also research them on a school computer, on your large laptop or in the school library (ever hear of "books"?)

You can finish your assignments at home on your large laptop. (Or on school computers and email them to yourself, save them on USB drives, etc.)

No, so far all you've come up with is "cute" and that's a bad reason to buy a computer. (It's why HP made it cute and it's why Apple's commercials lead you to believe that they're saying that Macs don't get viruses. It's called advertising hype.) You buy the best computer you can afford for the purpose you need it for, from a good manufacturer. HP isn't one, they're trading on the name that Hewlet and Packard made for them up to the year 2000, when Carly Fiorina took over and tossed quality out because quality doesn't increase the CEO's bonus. They make some of the WORST computers on the market now. (Look at ASUS for quality.)

What compontets do i need to get internet on my laptop?

You will need an internet connection first (duh)
1.)A wireless router (preferably with several ports) I prefer the Linksys wrt54g
www.linksys.com
2.)A usb or pcmcia network card. (available at wal-mart, best buy, etc)
At least one ethernet cat5 cable. To go from dsl modem (box phone line plugs into) to the wireless router.

Setting up this router is not that hard and I am sure you can call your service provider if you have questions.

Do a little searching for the brand that suites you best on the wireless router and card

May I suggest either
1.) Linksys
2.) Netgear
3.)D-link

Those are the most popular brands for wireless routers and cards.
